Politics2019: Kwankwaso Sneaks Into Kano, Begs Supporters To Support Son-in-law As Gover by 16Ebiscoo(op): 10:16am On Sep 25, 2018
Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Monday sneaked into the ancient city of Kano where he addressed his supporters at his Milla Road residence in Kano metropolis.

Many of his supporters were not aware of his arrival in Kano as the trip was not announced.

The former Governor, who is a presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had recently endorsed his son-in law, Abba Kabir Yusuf as his choice for 2019 governorship seat, an action that irked some of his followers.

However, Kwankwaso appealed to his followers to remain calm.

“I’m in Kano to see you and say thank you for the brotherhood and progressive unity we enjoy as Kwankwasiyya members. Certainly, we will sit and talk on vital issues affecting us”, NAN quoted him as saying.

The lawmaker explained that his choice of Abba Kabir Yusuf was necessary because most of his projects including the famous Kano Kofar Nassarawa flyover were designed and executed by Yusuf.

“Today most of the projects being executed by Ganduje are not durable and of low standard while huge amount of money was being spent on them.

“But our projects, which mostly were designed and executed by Abba Kabir Yusuf are today standing firm in Kano,” he said.

Kwankwaso, who spent only one hour in Kano, told his supporters who thronged his house that he was willing to sit with them and iron things out.

“If not for the fact that I’m busy and rushing back to Abuja for the Presidential screening going on right now, I would have loved to sit and discuss vital issues with you”, he said.

He promised to return in the next few weeks to resolve some of the issues on the forthcoming elections in 2019.

Among his loyalists at the meeting were: former Chief of Staff and Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr Yunusa Dangwani, Abba Kabir Yusuf, a former Commissioner of Works as well as Aminu Abdulsalam, his former commissioner of State Affairs.

CrimeChoirmaster’s Wife Pours Acid On Girl For Having Sex With Her Husband In Delta by 16Ebiscoo(op): 2:51pm On Sep 24, 2018
The Police at ‘B’ Division in Asaba, Delta State have arrested a 43-year-old housewife, identified as Maureen Ndikwe for allegedly bathing a female rival with acid.

Police sources say the suspect, wife of the choirmaster of a popular Pentecostal church in Asaba, allegedly bathed her rival on Sunday evening at a well-known hotel around Infant Jesus area of Asaba where the husband and the lady purportedly had sexual intercourse.

A senior police officer at the station, who confirmed the arrest of the suspect to journalists on the condition of anonymity, said, “the suspect confessed to attacking her rival in anger and with acid water. She said in her statement that the girl failed to steer clear of her husband after several warnings”.

It was gathered that the choirmaster’s alleged randy activities since he assumed the leadership of the choir section of the popular church had been alarming, particularly among teenage and unmarried girls whom he allegedly “pummeled” at the hotel most often.

This, our informed sources, said were piled up offences recorded against him by his wife who was said to have vowed to take the laws into her hands with a view to putting a stop to act of infidelity.

DSP Andrew Aniamaka, Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in the state, confirmed the arrest of the suspect, and told journalists that “the woman said she caught the husband with the girl in the hotel after they may have had sexual intercourse, and at the gate she poured acid water on her body”.

He added that the victim was at present being treated at the Federal Medical Center, FMC, Asaba as investigation was ongoing.

Eyewitness, Tony Ehrew said the suspect emerged from the bush path to the hotel when the unsuspecting husband and the girl were moving towards the gate, and brought out a container with acid water she allegedly poured on her rival.

But her attempt to disappear into thin air was thwarted when she stumbled on a stone and fell to the ground.

He said, “the suspect fell down after pouring the girl acid water, and in the process angry mob descended on her before the police were invited to the scene who later took her away to the police station.”

Pastor in charge of the church, who spoke to journalists on condition of anonymity, said there have been series of accusation of sleeping around with female church members by the husband of the suspect, adding that upon investigation, it was found that the choirmaster’s randy activities might spell doom for the church if he is not expelled.

He said, “We were just planning to expel the suspect’s husband when the bubble burst. By this he can no longer serve as a choirmaster of the church again.”

PoliticsWomen Protest Nude, Attack Army For Searching Mysterious Pond In Plateau Communi by 16Ebiscoo(op): 6:55am On Sep 21, 2018
Women numbering over 500, Thursday, protested in Dura Du community of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State when the military expanded its search for Major General Mohammed I. Alkali (Rtd), who was declared missing since Monday, September 3.

Major General Alkali retired from service as the Chief of Administration, Nigerian Army Headquarters, and few weeks later was declared missing.

He was said to be travelling from Abuja to Bauchi, and somewhere around Jos, his family lost contact with him.

According to military investigation, the General could have been killed and dumped in a deep pond in Dura Du, thereby making them to search the pond for him.

However, the protesting women in the community, dressed in black and some half-naked, began a violent protest against the military, throwing stones at the military personnel while others dared them to shoot and even attempted to wrestle weapons from their hands.

The women said their anger was that the military has put a siege on their community since they suspected that the General was in the pond, and again that their people have been repeatedly killed without the military protecting them.

But their major reason for protesting the search was due to a superstitious belief that the pond must not be disturbed in any way because it will lead to calamity for them, including mysterious deaths and other misfortunes.

Mary Yakubu, who spoke on behalf of the women said since the days of their forefathers no one has tampered with the water, and that it was a taboo to tamper with the water because their husbands and children will die mysteriously.

She said they haven’t known peace since the military suspected that their General was thrown into the pond with his car, saying that they have been harassed, threatened and even shot at.

Reacting, the search and rescue officer in charge of the operation, Brigadier General, Ibrahim Mohammed, said they had it on credible intelligence that General Alkali got missing in that area, and that the army headquarters had mandated and directed them to carry out a search and rescue operations.

Mohammed said no amount of protest by the women or any superstitious belief about the pond will stop them from the operation, saying that they had earlier contacted the community of the operation before its commencement.

“In an effort to search for the missing Major General, Idris Alkali, a lot of things were done, and all the hospitals in Jos were toured and checked. Besides, we have checked all the accident vehicles places. Based on credible intelligence, we now had to come to this community in the last one week. We are trying to find three things. One is General Alkali who has been declared missing. We are here also looking for his vehicle, a black Corolla and we want to find out if he is alive or not.

“Again, we have credible information that some vehicles were actually pushed into this pond. We came here for the last 3 days trying to see if we can salvage anything from the pond. The pond is a mining site and is deep. You can see that we have a crane, and we have used all kinds of methods and as the last resort, we have decided that we are going to evacuate the water from the pond to see what is underneath.

“I then came here and actually saw a group of women numbering over 500 all dressed in blacks and they insisted that we are not going to evacuate the water and we asked them why and they said this is the water they use to drink. And there are water points more than 30 of this type that are much more cleaner than this one in this environment. But surprisingly, the women began throwing stones at my troops.

“There was even an instance where one of the ladies was confident enough to try to wrestle a weapon from a soldier. And what these women are saying is that we will not evacuate this water, but we told them it is an order. No Jupiter can stop us until we see to the end of this. We will not allow miscreants to take the law into their hands. That would not be allowed,” he said.

He said soldiers have been stationed there and would try to provide protection to the community and other communities in the state, adding that the protesting women were being instigated from some quarters.

PoliticsSaraki: APC Vows To Stop ‘one Man Era’ In Kwara by 16Ebiscoo(op): 3:22am On Sep 20, 2018
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, on Wednesday vowed to stop the “one man era” going on in the state.

Chairman of the party in the state, Bashir Bolarinwa, said this in veiled reference to the strongman of Kwara politics and Senate President, Bukola Saraki, while addressing governorship aspirants and party members.

He said: “Kwara State might not have been so blessed in the choice of its chief executives in the past.

“We are determined to change the situation for the better now.

“That is why we are here: to further deepen our democratic process through engagement, participation and feedback from our respected audience.

“What we are doing today is a total departure from what obtains in the oligarchy system we are trying to stamp out.

“We are presenting to you our array of eminent Kwarans who are seeking to lead us through the ballot in 2019,” Bolarinwa said.

The chairman appealed to the governorship aspirants to use the opportunity to lay out their plans and manifestos to the people.

“Since the people are the ultimate in a participatory democracy like ours, we feel it is right for you to speak to them directly,” Bolarinwa said.

He assured the leadership of the party and members of the determination of his executive to produce a governor that would be accessible and loyal to the people.

“We are gradually closing the page of an era that has deliberately held the state back, an era in which the loyalty of public office holders is to one man rather than to the people.

“We are leaving an era in which one man, just one man, must be served.

“The result of such an undemocratic system is lack of infrastructure, depreciation in living standards, lack of respect for human lives and high handedness in the corridor of power.

“Never again will our state be held down by the whims and caprices of one man.

“The old order, which can only nurture mediocre and bring unpatriotic elements to the corridors of power, must give way to genuinely democratic system,” Bolarinwa said.

Aspirants that took part in the parley were Alhaji Hakeem Lawal, Amb. Yahaya Seriki, Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and Malam Ish’aq Modibbo-Kawu, the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission.

Others were Alhaji Lukman Mustapha, Alhaji Moshood Mustapha, Alhaji Dele Belgore (SAN), Prof. Shuaib Oba Abdulraheem, Alhaji Abdullahi Yaman, Alhaji Soliu Mustapha, Alhaji Tajudeen Audu and Alhaji Yakub Gobir.

PoliticsWhy Politicians Become Poor After Leaving Government – Amaechi by 16Ebiscoo(op): 11:00pm On Sep 12, 2018
The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi on Wednesday said many politicians become poor months after leaving office.

He said this while commending President Muhammadu Buhari over his insistence on prudent spending.

Amaechi in an interactive session with the media in Abuja, noted that the Buhari-led administration had achieved a lot in security, road, fight against corruption, agriculture and transportation.

He said: “In terms of corruption; this economy was a rent economy. Public money was spent anyhow and it was an economy that was not worked hard for.

“That is why you see politicians today very rich and one year after leaving government, they are poor.

“They are like that because they don’t know how to manage the money. When Buhari came, he said we could not continue to spend anyhow. Buhari has not said people should not steal.

“But when you steal, there is a consequence for stealing. I don’t want to say it has stopped completely but it has reduced. So if you say Buhari has not done anything on corruption, you are being most unfair.”

Amaechi said Nigerians will enjoy 24 hours of power supply if President Muhammadu Buhari is given a second chance.

“There is an improvement in power. We have moved from 3000megawatt to 7000 but we are distributing 5000 because some of the Infrastructures are not in good state but we are slowly fixing them.

“The expectation is that it should be 24 hours power supply but there will still be a gap but if you give us a second term, that gap will be closed.”

He added: “It is also unfair if Nigerians think the ministry of works is not working. The road to Bonny was abandoned after Obasanjo left government, the road was below N39bn but it is now N120bn that the Federal government wants to do it.

“So, Buhari government is dealing with corruption, building roads, the worst roads in Nigeria used to be between Uyo and Calabar but it has been awarded.

“The road to Enugu too that people are complaining about: contractors are working on the roads already. The work may be slow but they are working. Also the Ilorin-Jebba road has been awarded.”

PoliticsPDP Congresses: David Mark Warns Against Imposition Of Candidates by 16Ebiscoo(op): 10:21pm On Sep 07, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential hopeful, Senator David Mark, has canvassed for rancour free Congresses as party faithful elect delegates for the 2019 polls.

He cautioned against imposition of candidates.

Senator Mark told party faithful in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday to conduct themselves peacefully according to the rules of the game, stressing that the will of the people must be allowed to prevail.

He added: “as we converge to elect delegates to the Congresses beginning from Saturday, we must be guided by democratic tenets and observe the principle of fairness and justice.

Senator Mark restated that he joined the presidential race because “I believe I can make a positive difference in Nigeria.”

According to him: “nobody can shy away from the fact that Nigeria is currently faced with intractable security, economic and socio-political challenges that unarguably threatens the corporality of the country.

“Rarely has our country been faced with such a state of uncertainty, despair, suspicion and division. Time has come for all men and women who care and have the requisite experiences and courage to stand up, retrieve it from the brink and lead our nation into prosperity.”

Senator Mark expressed optimism that his road map to economic recovery and prosperity tagged 730 model will turn around the economy of the nation within two years of his administration if elected President.

He said he has assembled a team of young Nigerian Professionals to hit the ground running and facilitate the economic recovery.

Education, he said, will be given top priority as the bedrock for development, adding “we will focus on Education and create a pool of highly trained citizens with excellent IT skills who will be employable as well as create jobs.”

He stated, “we will support Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) as a matter of priority with interest free cooperative loans and appropriate technology, which will be the main driver of the economy with attendant rate of huge employment opportunities”

PoliticsYour Boss Evil – Fani-kayode Carpets Lai Mohammed Over Buhari by 16Ebiscoo(op): 6:04pm On Sep 07, 2018
Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has lambasted Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, for describing President Muhammadu Buhari as the symbol of Nigeria.

He lamented that Mohammed and others in the Buhari government never said same when ex-President Goodluck Jonathan was in power.

The former presidential aide said Jonathan and his wife Patience were regularly attacked and called names.

A statement he signed on Friday said: “Painful cruel words were deployed against a profoundly good, peaceful, kind and loving man and great President and his precious wife but now the joke is on them and they are eating those words.

“I say this to them: Buhari does not represent me, my tribe, my zone or my faith and he is not the symbol of my country. As a matter of fact the contrary is the case.

“He represents evil and that is why we have rejected him. He represents everything that all right-thinking people detest and despise.

“He represents blood, death, destruction, failure, anarchy, division, poverty, pain, conflict, malevolence and strife. He represents the forces of darkness and sorrow beyond measure.

“Now is the time to dig deep, build bridges, form new alliances, bury old differences and conscientiously collaborate with others that share our concerns about his flagrant incompetence, reckless ineptitude and inordinate capacity for evil.

“We must vote him out in February and remove him from power. If we succeed Nigeria will heal and we shall restore and rebuild her.

“If we fail Nigeria is doomed, she will never rise again and she will fade away into the sad and sorrowful ashes of a failed and inglorious history”.

PoliticsAbia A PDP State, APC Has Nothing To Offer – Senator Orji by 16Ebiscoo(op): 10:17am On Sep 07, 2018
Former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia central zone in the National Assembly, Theodore Orji, has described Abia as a PDP state.

He boasted that come 2019 election, the ruling party in the state will win again.

Senator Orji stated this on Thursday evening, through his Aide, Suleiman Ukandu against the backdrop of the boast by some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state to use federal might to unseat him and Governor Okezie Ikpeazu PDP-led government in the upcoming 2019 election.

He said he was unperturbed by the machination of the opposition, pointing out that the people of Abia state would return him and the governor in 2019 based on their outstanding performances since assumption of office.

According to the ex-governor, “Abia is PDP. PDP is Abia. No amount of propaganda and name calling by the opposition will deter us from providing the people of the state dividends of democracy.

“I have attracted a lot of projects in Abia central senatorial zone. The people are being empowered to be self dependence. I am not worry over their evil plot, because I know the opposition has nothing to offer Abia people.

“As 2019 election is fast approaching, I believe, the people of Abia central zone and indeed Abians would massively vote for PDP, because we have delivered on our promises”.

“Every nook and crannies of Abia State has felt the impact of the government. We have carried out several infrastructural projects in the state, which well meaning Abians can testify to. So, I’m not worried,” he added.

PoliticsMalami: We’ve Recovered Billions Through Whistleblower Policy by 16Ebiscoo(op): 10:31am On Sep 06, 2018
Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, SAN, has said the government through its whistleblower policy has recovered billions of naira.

He said the recovery was made possible through measures, such as establishment of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Executive Order No.6, etc.

Speaking at the 2nd annual conference/induction for members of the Chartered Institute of Forensic and Investigative Auditors (CIFIA), Malami said the administration through his office ensured that corrupt individuals were unable to use the money or property obtained through corrupt means.

He said it was the belief of the Buhari administration that those, who corruptly enriched themselves with public funds, should be jailed, to act as a deterrent to others.

Malami said: “Mr. President has since assumption of office, through my office as the Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, introduced measures aimed at preventing culprits of corruption from using money or properties obtained through corrupt means.

“Some of these measures include the introduction of the whistleblower policy, Executive Order No.6, establishment of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), just to mention a few.

“These measures have yielded positive results, particularly in the recovery of proceeds of crime running into billions of Naira through the whistleblower policy.

“While such measures will be strengthened to achieve the desired objective, it is the belief of this administration that those, who corruptly enrich themselves with public funds, should not only be denied the benefits of the proceeds of their corrupt practices, but should also be tried in court and where found guilty should be jailed to act as a deterrent to others.”

CIFIA President Dr. Victoria Enape said the primary domain of forensic and investigative auditing was to work within the investigative process from the scene of financial fraud to court.

She said: “The primary domain of forensic and investigative auditing is to work within the investigative process from the scene of financial fraud to court, providing information and evidence for administration of justice.

“This, we believe, will be a major boost to activities of anti-corruption agencies, such as the EFCC, ICPC and CCT.”

SportsEPL: Harry Maguire Reveals Why He Snubbed Manchester United Move by 16Ebiscoo(op): 8:13am On Sep 05, 2018
Harry Maguire has revealed Manchester United did make a move for him this summer, but he is happy to still be at Leicester, the UK Mirror reports.

United boss Jose Mourinho targeted the England defender after his impressive World Cup campaign.

But Maguire insists he had no problem continuing with the Foxes, saying he owes them a debt of gratitude.

The centre-half, signed from relegated Hull last summer, said: “Obviously going into a World Cup there was always going to be if he were successful as we were there were always going to be players who came under interest that is part and parcel of the game.

“I spoke with Leicester after a bit of interest from clubs, and they reiterated that I wasn’t for sale and I respected that decision.

“They gave me an opportunity to play in the Premier League, when I had just been relegated with Hull. They gave me that opportunity and it is a club I am really enjoying my time at. I am playing week in and week out which is important to me.

“They have given me the platform to play at the World Cup so I feel I owe them and I respect that decision. Now I am looking forward to the season.”

CelebritiesSHOCKER! 50-year-old Headmaster Fingers His Female Students Repeatedly In Enugu… by 16Ebiscoo(op): 9:47am On Sep 04, 2018
A school headmaster identified as Nathaniel Idoko, has been arrested by the police in Enugu State for allegedly defiling four female pupils of the school.

Idoko, 50, who hails from Mkpamteulo Enugu Ezike, Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu is the headmaster in charge of Migrant Farmers Children School, located in Aguibeji community, Enugu-Ezike.

He was said to have on July 17, this year cornered the four students, whose ages were given as between five and six years to a bush near the school and abused them sexually.

In a statement yesterday, the police in Enugu stated that the act occurred during school hours, adding that the suspect had allegedly “used his fingers on the private parts of the four female pupils, which inflicted serious injuries on them, making them to walk abnormally.”

The Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, revealed that the atrocity by the headmaster came to the fore when one of the abused pupils told the ugly story to her parents.

“This led to the arrest of the headmaster who in response, regretted his act and blamed it on Satan. He said he did not know why he did what he did, adding that he has seen that he did not achieve anything doing what he did,” Amaraizu said.

Amaraizu, who explained that the headmaster is a married man, added that he has now resorted to begging for forgiveness. On whether he has been doing that with other pupils before now, the headmaster declared that it was his first time, adding that there was no motive behind it.

The four victims involved are being treated by doctors at the police medical unit of the Enugu State command, as investigations have commenced into the matter.

The police said the headmaster would be arraigned in court on the conclusion of investigations.

PoliticsAPC Speaks On Members’ Condemnation Of Nomination Fees by 16Ebiscoo(op): 8:08am On Sep 03, 2018
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it was yet to receive any formal complaint about nominations fees from any of its members or aspirants.

The party last week proposed N1m for State Assembly aspirants, N3.8m for House of Representatives aspirants, N8.5 for Senate aspirants, N22.5m for governorship aspirants and N55.5m for presidential nomination forms for the 2019 general election.

The fees have sparked protest and members are positing that elective positions should not be for only moneybags.

Reacting, APC National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, explained that what the National Working Committee (NWC) presented before National Executive Committee (NEC) was a proposal which was being considered.

Nabena told Punch, “To the best of my knowledge, the party has not received any complain from any of our aspirants.

“I know that what we have are proposals being considered and NEC gave that responsibility to the NWC.”

Meanwhile, an internal crisis is brewing in the ruling party over the mode of primaries.

On Sunday, Nabena said that the party had received information that some members were working against the NEC resolutions.

The spokesman noted: “The identities of those plotting such meetings have been identified and unless they desist from such they will be dealt with in line with the Party’s Constitution at the appropriate time.

“The NWC will resist any attempt to disrupt the current peace and harmony prevailing in our great Party after the exit of some members of our Party.

“We urge any member who is not satisfied with the decisions of the Party to utillize channels provided by the Party’s constitution to air their views.”

PoliticsBush, Obama, Kerry, Others Honour Mccain At Funeral by 16Ebiscoo(op): 1:48pm On Sep 02, 2018
Two ex-presidents from opposing parties united on Saturday in homage to late senator and American patriot John McCain, in a momentous farewell ceremony that also rebuked the politics of toxicity and division by Donald Trump.

As millions tuned in to the nationally televised memorial attended by the breadth of Washington powerbrokers, Trump himself was notably absent — leaving the capital to head to his golf club in Virginia just when eulogies to McCain were being delivered.

And while Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Barack Obama offered subtle swipes at the current commander in chief, McCain’s daughter Meghan used the words of Trump’s campaign slogan to deliver a searing, unmistakable rebuke.

“The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again because America was always great,” she said, to extended applause.

As Bush and Obama praised McCain for repeatedly placing country over party or self, the stunning contrast between the unifying ceremony under the neo-Gothic arches of Washington National Cathedral and an outcast Trump only highlighted the astonishing state of US politics.

Hailing his friend as “an extraordinary man” who embodied what is best in America, Obama said McCain, who battled fiercely but respectfully in the political arena, “made us better presidents — just as he made the Senate better, just as he made the country better.”

He was echoing similar sentiments expressed minutes earlier by Bush, who defeated McCain in a “hard fought” Republican primary battle in 2000, only to see that bitter rivalry melt away into a lasting friendship.
‘Same team’

While Bush and Obama hail from different parties, their message Saturday was clear: US politics can and should rise to a higher level with the example set by McCain.

“We never doubted the other man’s sincerity or the other man’s patriotism — or that when all was said and done, we were on the same team,” Obama said of his rough but respectful campaign battles with McCain.

So much of today’s politics, “our public discourse, can seem small and mean and petty, trafficking in bombast and insult,” he added.

“It’s a politics that pretends to be brave and tough but in fact is born of fear. John called on us to be bigger than that.”

McCain’s final public ceremony before his private burial Sunday at the US Naval Academy in nearby Annapolis, Maryland highlighted the warrior politician’s call for healing.

“Perhaps above all John detested the abuse of power, could not abide bigots and swaggering despots,” said Bush, as Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner sat in attendance.

Trump’s Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly were also present.

But it was the gathering of heavyweights from both parties past and present that drew more attention, including Bill and Hillary Clinton; former vice presidents Al Gore, Dick Cheney and Joe Biden; and former secretaries of state Henry Kissinger, Madeleine Albright and John Kerry.

International dignitaries were also in attendance. On the guest list provided by funeral organizers was President Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine, where McCain helped support opposition to Russian aggression, and Russian opposition figure Vladimir Kara-Murza.
Withering rebuke

McCain, who died last Saturday at age 81, has been lionized over the past week of emotional commemorations, including his congressional colleagues bestowing him the rare honor of lying in state in the US Capitol on Friday.

At the funeral, which McCain spent months organizing as he battled cancer, Meghan McCain delivered a tear-filled tribute to her father.

And while Trump’s name was not mentioned during the ceremony, McCain’s daughter drew a clear and damning distinction between her father and Trump’s combative politics.

“We gather here to mourn the passing of American greatness — the real thing, not cheap rhetoric from men who will never come near the sacrifice he gave so willingly,” she said, criticizing “those who lived lives of comfort and privilege, while he suffered and served.”

Earlier Saturday, the flag-draped casket of McCain, a prisoner of war in Vietnam for more than five years, was taken by honor guard from the US Capitol and placed in a black hearse.

It stopped at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to allow his widow Cindy McCain to lay a wreath honoring all who died in the conflict.

She had been stoic throughout days of commemorations for her husband, but on Saturday during opera singer Renee Fleming’s performance of the ballad “Danny Boy,” she lay her head on son Jack’s shoulder and wept.

“Today we lost our hero, our friend, our mentor, our father, our grandfather and our husband. Together we mourn and together we go on,” she wrote on Twitter.

Aside from Trump, another notable figure not invited to the funeral was McCain’s 2008 running mate Sarah Palin, who became associated with the far-right movement that in some ways nurtured white identity politics.

HealthNigeria: Air Pollution - Nigeria Ranks 4th Deadliest Globally by 16Ebiscoo(op): 8:42am On Sep 01, 2018
Nigeria has the highest maternal mortality in the world. It's the country with highest number of extremely poor people in the world and now, it has the highest burden of fatalities from air pollution in Africa and 4th globally.

There is a silent rage of air pollution in Nigeria. These days, the air quality is so bad it kills. Almost every breath taken is like the breath of death. Literally, air pollution is choking the life out of Nigerians. Indoors and outdoors, air pollution is killing more urban residents today than ever before.

The air people breathe in Nigeria is more likely to cause harm than the air in any other country in Africa because Nigeria currently has the highest burden of fatalities from air pollution in Africa and 4th highest in the world with 150 deaths per 100,000 people attributable to pollution.

According to the just released annual State of the Global Air Report published by the Health Effects Institute (HEI), air quality in Nigeria and at least 10 other countries is among the deadliest anywhere on earth with higher than ambient air pollution death rates as a result of the environmental hazards combined with extreme pollution sources like generator fumes, vehicle emissions and crop burning among others.

The HEI chart notes that there were 150 deaths per age-standardized deaths per 100,000 people attributable to air pollution in Nigeria in 2016 (the latest year of available data), compared to high industrialised countries like China, 117 deaths per 100,000 people; Russia, 62 deaths per 100,000 people; Germany, 22 deaths per 100,000 people; United Kingdom, 21 deaths per 100,000 people; the United States, 21 deaths per 100,000 people; Japan 13 deaths per 100,000 people and Canada, 12 deaths per 100,000 people.

Only Afghanistan with 406; Pakistan, 207, and India, 195 deaths per 100,000 people per country, exceed the Nigerian figure.

The chart showcases a striking gap between the most and least polluted air around the world. While developed countries have experienced success in reducing emissions and air pollution levels, poorer nations have fallen behind, although it should be noted that tougher pollution controls are being introduced in some of the countries. In 1990, 3.5 billion people were exposed to it and that has now fallen to 2.4 billion despite an increase in the global population.

The report notes that 95 percent of the world's population is breathing unhealthy air. It said long-term exposure to air pollution contributed to just over 6 million deaths in 2016 with strokes, lung disease, lung cancer and heart attacks linked to many of them. After smoking, high blood pressure and poor diet, air pollution is the fourth-highest cause of death worldwide with most deaths occurring in developing countries.

Air sustains life, but air could also snuff out life. With air you live, and with air you could die. In a number of the big Nigerian cities, when people present at the hospital with health problems including chest pain, dry throat, nausea, aggravated respiratory disease such as emphysema, bronchitis, lung damage, and asthma among other respiratory problems, it often turns out that they've been exposed to the effects of poor air quality.

Symptoms such as irritation to the eyes, nose and throat, and upper respiratory infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia are also suspect. Air pollution increases the risk of cancer. There are two types of air pollutants - gas pollutants (e.g. carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, etc.) and particles in the air. Air particles can accumulate in the lungs.

Air pollution is hardly listed among causes of death on death certificates in Nigeria, yet the health conditions linked to air pollution exposure, such as lung cancer and emphysema, are often fatal.

According to a 2016 World Health Organisation report, Onitsha, Kaduna, Aba and Umuahia were among four of the 20 African cities with the worst air quality in the world.

The WHO measured air quality by examining the annual mean concentration of particulate matter in nearly 3,000 cities across the world with populations of at least 100,000. Onitsha's average annual PM10 was 594 - nearly 30 times greater than the WHO-recommended annual level of 20. Kaduna, Aba, and Umuahia cities were ranked among the top 20 worst cities measured by PM10, ranking 8th, 9th, and 19th, respectively.

Air pollution is now the fourth-highest cause of death worldwide, trailing smoking, high blood pressure and diet, with the majority of deaths recorded in poorer nations with India and China leading the world in the total number of deaths attributable to air pollution in 2016 with 1.61 million and 1.58 million respectively. Data from the report show that ambient levels of unsafe air continue to exceed the Air Quality Guideline established by the World Health Organisation, WHO.

In a typical scenario thick clouds of blackened smoke usually envelope large areas within Nigerian city suburbs as many smoky and noisy generators run throughout the day and all night. It's a routine residents are familiar with - clouds of particulate-tinged smoke spreading, setting the pace for generator-induced illnesses and even death.

Generator fumes comprise a lethal cocktail of poisonous and environmentally unfriendly gases, including carbon monoxide and other noxious products. Carbon monoxide could be a serious health hazard. Indoors or in close proximity, the gas quickly infiltrates living spaces and incapacitates occupants.

All over town, worn out generators and vehicles with poorly-tuned engines are belching out smoke of noxious emissions, making the air as toxic on the streets as it is unhealthy in the kitchen at home where a kerosene stove burns sooty flames almost around the clock. A combination of incomplete combustion and lack of ventilation leads to high concentrations of particulate matter and other pollutants in the home and the resulting burden of household air pollution on human health. Rather than dispose refuse and some other wastes or unwanted materials some Nigerians burn them within their neighborhood.

The problem is also manifesting in the rural areas due to burning of firewood and coal for cooking. Globally the estimated population relying on solid fuels has reduced but Nigeria remains among countries with populations exposed to household air pollution from dependence on solid fuel. Worse still, over 70 percent of the fuel in the country is generated from fossil fuel.

Most Nigerians are thus exposed to household air pollution with fine particulate matter levels exceeding air quality guidelines by as much as 20 times. Air pollution from indoor sources is recognised as the single largest contributor to the negative health effects of air pollution in Nigeria.

While developed nations have been taking action to clean their air, Nigeria is still among the countries that have fallen behind as revealed in the death rate.

Nigeria produces more than 3 million tons of waste annually, and uncontrolled waste burning is one of the practices that contribute to deteriorating air quality. Almost every Nigerian is exposed to air pollution levels exceeding WHO guidelines and inflicting significant air pollution damage costs.

In Lagos for instance, an estimated seven million people died from diseases related to indoor and outdoor air pollution in 2012 according to the WHO.

Part of the problem is that environmental regulations and enforcement are lax; people are more exposed to air pollution but less able to protect themselves from exposure either in the open, in the workplace or at home.

No doubt, Nigeria requires tougher pollution controls if it hopes to effectively combat indoor air pollution by producing safer and more environmentally friendly alternatives. How clean the air is matters to your health. Increasing public awareness of air pollution and the burden of diseases that it imposes on individuals, families, and society is an essential step toward making the changes that will improve public health.
