I start with a song from Jamaican Raggae group, Third World's homage to the big bad city of Lagos, Nigeria. The song was later covered by German based Nigerian musician, Bantu in 2006.

Watch out, I'm about to unleash the Abami Eda on y'all. Fela is the greatest Nigerian musician, PERIOD. He is also arguably one of the greatest Nigerians to ever walk this planet.

First in line is Lady, my friends use this song whenever we have arguements about Fela being a sexist. I don't think he was, how can you call him sexist when he admits his mother is the greatest influence in his own life and his mother's name is synonymous with women's rights and feminism in Africa. 

By the way I saw a broadway musical on Fela over the weekend and they called his mother Funmilayo ANIKULAPO-kuti, the Nigerian in me laughed out loud. The show has been going on for 2 months and nobody corrected them, her correct name is Funmilayo RANSOME-kuti. Anyway . . .

Who're you is from the same album as Lady, they are both from Fela's 1970 album London Scene, his first Afro-beat record(?). Some people call the song Epanude - meaning close your mouth in the Yoruba language. Unlike many other Fela song, he sings a lot of this in Yoruba.

Next up is one of Fela's encounters with the Nigerian Police. It shows Fela's sense of humour and his ability to tell a story right. The story: The Nigerian police came to Fela's house while he was smoking weed, as soon as they came in he got arrested but the strange one did something strange - swallowed the weed. The Nigerian police decided to wait for him to take a shit so they could do a shit-test and find the marijuana. The policeman that was chosen to guard him fell asleep after 3 days and so Fela used another inmate's shit. EXPENSIVE SHIT.

The next two songs are short songs from Chief Ebenezer Obey. They were both recorded in London in 1969. The first one is titled Ibadan, a homage to the largest black city in the world. Emafi Ibadan sere. The other song is titled Ore Serere (Friends, Do good).  Watch out for the drums that kick in about 1 minute into the song - simply beautiful.

These song titled Shango by Peter King is gloryfying Yoruba gods Shango and Ogun. Peter King went to Trinity College of Music, London with Fela and Wole Bucknor. He calls his music Afro-Jazz ( Guy Warren of Ghana and the group Jazz Maniacs from SA  also claim to be the innovators of Afro-Jazz)

The next song is by Tony Allen. I'm posting this not so much for the message but for the drums on this song right here, mindblowing! J.dilla sampled this for my favourite rapper's song, Heat off LWFC.  Rumours have it that the late Dilla didn't clear the sample. A-SI-KO - Time waits for no man.

He is also accepted as one of the greatest African drummers of all time along with guess who, Guy Warren of Ghana.

My highlife post. Highlife was popular in the 50s and 60s. It was mainly a Nigeria-Ghana thing although it was a popular music genre throughout West-Africa.

Victor Olaiya's song Omo Pupa, literarily means light-skinned lady. I don't think this song caused any controversies when it came out, If he sang this song now, all the black and proud girls would be calling for his head. Light-skinned people are part of Africa. I used to hate it when guys made statements like "I only date light-skinned women" but as I grew older, I came to understand that everyone has a preference and preferring light-skinned girls is not necesarily "colonial mentality."

Maybe Sir Victor Uwaifo deserves a post by himself . . . These two songs are his most popular works. The first one Joromi was a party favourite over 9000 years ago and the other one Guitar Boy is also a great piece of art showcasing his guitar skills. Legend has it that he wrote Guitar Boy right after an encounter with a mermaid. The second part of Joromi also tells a funny story about a monkey.

This thread is crap-free. D'banj's music doesn't appeal to me and this is my thread. He sings about the same sexual things - sex, sex, sex, without making a lot of sense and I don't find him creative. Everyone in this thread is great in their own rights, D'banj . . . not so much.

Coming up is a bunch of early Yoruba songs, this songs paved way for KSA, CCEO and later on SSP.

First off is a Hubert Ogunde song titled Ibere Ki i se onise, something in the vein of the English saying "The End Justifies the means. "The call and response  scheme is one of the things I like about this.

Watch out for his use of extended metaphors - "The world is a river, a river is what the world is, if the people of the world turn into a river, I wouldn't drown." Translating these metaphors was actually a stupid thing to do, you need to listen to the song in context so as to grab the puns, alliteration, assonance . . . Conclusively, this is what our music should sound like!!!

The other song here is the song "The King of children" by I.K. Dairo, we run into the same problems with translation in the title of this song. The real title is Okin Omo ni - meaning "he is the Alpha male rooster among Kids,"I know my translation is off but its better that "The king of children"
