Flying Eagles official praises World Cup venue

Flying Eagles secretary Ibrahim Aliyu Auwal has said he has been most impressed with the facilities he saw at the team’s New Plymouth venue for the FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand.

Auwal was in New Zealand on the invitation of FIFA to inspect facilities that will be at the disposal of African champions Nigeria during the World Cup, which begins on May 30.

“The playing pitch is superb, so too the team’s hotel, which we will share with Hungary. The weather will be a little cold by the time of the World Cup but overall I expect a very successful tournament,” said the Flying Eagles official, who was also interviewed by one of the local newspapers there.

“Everybody was warm and I believe that will also be the case when the entire team arrive there in late May.”

Nigeria will play all their first round group games in New Plymouth beginning with the showdown against Brazil on June 2.

Auwal expressed confidence the Flying Eagles will make history in New Zealand.

“We respect all the teams we will face, but they won’t stop Nigeria from taking the trophy back home. We are optimistic we will conquer the world in New Zealand,” he predicted.

Glad Kelechi scored a goal on his first game since his injury. Goes to show that he's not the kind of player that can be washed out by injury. And he scored in 5 minutes as well. Impressive

I sincerely look forward to seeing he and Awoniy wreak havoc on the oppositions' defence at the world cup and prove that their u-17 exploits were no fluke.

Meanwhile, what's up with Isaac Success? That dude may just end up as a wasted talent....he'll most likely lose his place on the team as well

I see success benching Awoniyi at the world cup. Granada is just a poor team. He would have done better in a mid table team.

You will be surprised how very sharp Isaac Success still is. He has worked hard all season at Granada. No creativity, no supplies, no attacking initiative from the Granada midfield. It's a shame, really.

The limiting factor to his first team shirt at the World Cup will be how quickly he will be able to adapt to the current rhythm of the team.

Now that Man City has confined Kelechi to the striking role based on his finishing prowress, it's left to be seen what Manu does. Will he still use him as an attacking midfielder he started out with or make him a top striker.

I wait to see what happens.

Adepoju, Ohenhen, Ugbade, Nwosu, Aghahowa, Mikel, Taiwo… Who’s the next FIFA U20 World Cup Star?

Pius Ikedia, Obasi Chinedu Ogbuke, John Mikel Obi, Lukman Haruna, Mutiu Adepoju, Nduka Ugbade, Taye Taiwo, Julius Aghahowa are among the innumerable Nigerians to have illuminated the FIFA U-20 World Cup. A crop of their compatriots will have the chance to do the same in a few months time, when Nigeria again partake in the 20th edition of the tournament, having not missed out in the last 6 editions.

After conquering Africa again, the Flying Eagles have set their sights on becoming the first Nigerian side to win the FIFA U20 World Cup, a feat which isn't too much for them to achieve. Meanwhile, Thenff.com highlights 7 stars from the current crop who should not only shine at the World Youth Championship but afterwards.

7. Wilfred Ndidi.

Position: Central Defender

The highly-rated central defender featured for the Golden Eaglets in the qualifying series of the 2013 CAF U17 Championship, but was not eligible for the competition proper. He will bring his experience to bear especially in the Flying Eagles defence after he featured at the 2013 World Cup in Turkey. He is composed and organises the back four very well. He only missed out of the AYC because his clubside KRC Genk, refused to release him.

6. Isaac Success

Position: Striker

He was the star of the CAF U17 championship in 2013 where he emerged as the top scorer (7 goals); now he is still regarded highly even though he has is yet to feature for the Flying Eagles. Success started well at the U17 World Cup scoring in the opening 2 games, but a hamstring injury cut short his tournament.

Loaned to Granada from Udinese, first he broke into the first team with appearances against Barcelona and Valencia but struggled for form; he scored 1 goal in 27 games and was immediately relegated to Granada B once coach Joaquin Caparros was sacked in January; He has scored 6 in 15 since then. He will be available for selection and the wealth of experience gained whilst playing in the top-flight can be deemed invaluable.

5. Bernard Bulbwa

Position: Right Midfielder

That eye-catching, championship winning goal. That moment of guts and an attitude that best demonstrates a player full of confidence in his own ability to deliver regardless of the magnitude of the game. It is like attempting (and scoring) a panenka when your team desperately need an equaliser in the closing minutes of a World Cup final. With only one goal scored at the African Youth Championship, Bulbwa couldn't have picked a better game to score it, the final.

And surely it got him a 4-year contract with Tunisian giants Esperance. Watch out for him.

4. Musa Yahaya

Position: Left Midfielder

Some call him the "Nigerian Iniesta" and here's why: Right-footed and when on the ball he loves to take-on his opponent, drift inwards and have a go at goal. Off the ball, he makes a lot of diagonal run behind the defence, very quick in transition and is readily available as a defensive cover. His ability to set-up his teammates or drag defenders out of position is invaluable.

Yahaya scored 4 goals at the U-17 world cup in UAE scored a couple more as Nigeria prepared for the AYC qualifiers and only missed out of the competition itself due to a knee injury suffered days before the final list was to be released.

3. Taiwo Awoniyi

Position: Striker

Taiwo was primarily a back-up to Isaac Success but how mother luck caught up with him eh? The 5 goals he scored in UAE remains an impressive number for a striker who is supposed to be a back-up. Although, blessed with the physique to fend off threats, Awoniyi does not entirely rely on this precious asset. He considers himself a hardworker and will bully his way to glory.

After the U-17 World Cup, Taiwo quickly rose to prominence, leading the attack line and scoring another 3 goals as the Fly Eagles conquered Africa for the 7th time. He has been likened to Rasheed Yekini, that is one debate the great Yekini would have loved to be a part of; he remains the man with arguably the best goal-per-game ratio (37 in 57 games) for the National team. Taiwo has a long way to go, and the tag may have come too early, but his ratio isn't far behind either albeit on the age-grade level. Yours truly will discuss this issue on a later date, but watch out for the man who became an instant hit for the U-23. He single-handedly handed Nigeria the All Africa Games ticket when our hopes became thin.

2. Kelechi Iheanacho

Position: Attacking Midfielder

He was the star of the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup. He is a great dribbler, good passer of the ball, packs a decent shot in his left boot and has great vision for goals. Injuries have hampered his development in the last months but the Manchester City youngster will definitely be back for the World Cup. He is simply too good to be ignored.

1. Musa Muhammed

Position: Right full-back

Calm, composed, organized and efficient. Ever seen a defender who defends so well yet has a knack for scoring? The South-Americans have loads of them and now we have ours. Musa ended the U-17 World cup with 4 goals and emerged Top scorer at the recently concluded AYC with 4 goals (all from the penalty spot). Good news is, he scores direct freekicks too.

Despite his knack for scoring, he has not become selfish when in an attacking position. Musa works well with his teammates and remains the perfect leader for this crop of exceptional talent at the U-20.

His decision to snub a call-up to the U-23 for crucial AAG qualifier was widely criticized and rightly so, but it remains the only disciplinary issue we have had with Musa Muhammed. He remains a committed lad and is definitely ready to storm New Zealand. Just like Iheanacho, Musa's talent is good enough for the Super Eagles and too good for the U-20 to be ignored. CHECK.

Noticed that too. That was a very bad attitude, especially when this particular goal was from a very good assist.

he's beeen doing it since U-17....very terrible behaviour. Someone needs to caution him about it lest he feels the wrath of his team mates.

Flying Eagles To Set Deadline For Foreign Pros On Friday

A deadline for foreign invited professionals of the Nigeria under-20 team will be set on Friday according to the team secretary Ibrahim Aliyu Auwal.

Aliyu told SL10.ng that the team, which will hopefully depart for Germany on Wednesday, will be camped in Nuremburg and all invited foreign players are expected to join them for camping ahead of the World Youth Championship.

However, following doubts that some players might not be released by their professional sides the soft spoken secretary said the team will meet on Friday after their arrival in Germany to set a deadline for the invited foreign based players.

"We will set a deadline on Friday and stand by it as we will be flexible to all of the players in our decision," he told SL10.ng

"We might consider different dates for the players based on the demands of their various teams as already some teams have made it known they will release their players mainly based on their position in their leagues we have to respect that.

"We don't want to soil their relationship with their clubs but at the same time we don't want any distraction, hence the reason why we have to set a deadline to avoid any player holding us back in our plans".

Manchester City Wonderkid Iheanacho Cleared To Join Nigeria Under 20s

On a personal level, Manchester City's teenage sensation Kelechi Iheanacho silenced his critics following his immaculate display against Chelsea's Under 18 squad in the final of the FA Youth Cup.

And no wonder the Nigeria youth international celebrated his fifth minute goal at Stamford Bridge by putting a finger to his mouth, a sign to any doubting Thomas to 'shut up'.

Prior to the contest in London on Monday night, there had been speculations that the Taye Academy pupil would not be fit for this summer's Fifa Under 20 World Cup due to an ankle injury.

Having come through the game against the Chelsea Under 18s unscathed, Kelechi Iheanacho's management team has said that he will link up with the Flying Eagles at their training camp in Germany in the coming days.

''Kelechi Iheanacho had an ankle injury but he's now fully fit,'' a representative of the striker told SL10.ng.

''Both Manchester City and his management team decided that he should not undergo surgery, so Kelechi was very disciplined to wear a cast.

''With this game in the bag, expect him to join the Flying Eagles camp soon.

''He has shot down all rumours concerning his fitness. Yesterday he showed everyone that he still has his sharpness, he is back.''

The 18-year-old Iheanacho was one of the revelations of the 2013 FIFA Under 17 World Cup, and was presented with the Golden Ball as the best player of the competition.

Granada Wants Success To Delay Arrival For WYC Camp

Spanish La Liga relegation contenders Granada want Nigeria Under-20 forward Isaac Success to delay his planned arrival date to the camp of the Nigeria team ahead of the Under-20 World Cup.

SL10.ng gathered a meeting was held last Thursday with the team Sporting director Juan Carlos Cordero and the 19-year-old was told in clear terms that he features prominently in their plans to beat the drop to the second division of Spain.

He was told coach Abel Resino believes he can play a big part in solving the team's lack of goals despite just scoring once this season and hence they want him to stay a little longer as they have got just five more games to go before the season ends.

A testament to the coach faith in his abilities was his 90 minute action yesterday against Valencia which they lost 4-0 to further slim their chances of avoiding relegation.

However, they will be willing to let the Nigerian leave for camping with the Nation's under-20 side if they are no longer mathematically sure of avoiding relegation.

Success is expected to join the Nigeria team in Germany where they will be camping but this latest twist might delay his arrival in camp a situation which might angered coach of the team Manu Garba.

The gaffer is already unhappy about Isaac Success' lack of commitment towards the team's course after he missed all of their qualifying games for the Africa Youth Championship and the tournament itself which Nigeria won.

The emergence of Taiwo Awoniyi might also make the coaches think they can do without the on-loan Granada forward as Awoniyi has grown in leaps and bounds even moving a step up and scoring for the Under-23 in the absence of Isaac Success.

Ugbade: Flying Eagles In Great Shape For Germany Tour

Assistant coach of the Flying Eagles Nduka Ugbade has stated that there are no injury worries as the team prepares to travel out of the country on Wednesday for Germany, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The training tour of Germany is in continuation of the team’s preparations for this year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup taking place in New Zealand.

Speaking with Completesportsnigeria.com, Ugbade says Musa Yahaya who missed the AYC in Senegal due to injury is fit and will be travelling with the team.

“Preparations for the training tour has been interesting, but a bit stressful. There are no injury worries, the players are all ready, the other guys whom we are expecting will join us in Germany. Musa Yahaya is fine. In fact, he is getting better. He has been training with us and will travel with the team for the training tour of Germany.

Ugbade also hints that the duo of Kelechi Iheanacho and Isaac Success, who featured in Manchester City U-18s and Granada games respectively on Monday, were monitored by the coaching crew.

“We are aware that Kelechi scored for Manchester City U-18 team because we monitored the game. Also, we saw Isaac Success in action for Granada,” Ugbade states.

The Flying Eagles are grouped along with Brazil, Hungary and North Korea at the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

They will open their account against old nemesis Brazil.

Aboagye: We can take the next step

At the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey two years ago, Clifford Aboagye was one of the stand-out players. The midfielder was named the winner of the adidas Bronze Ball award as he helped Ghana to a third-place finish. The 20-year-old, who will be appearing at his second global tournament later this year, shared his expectations for New Zealand 2015 with FIFA.com, saying confidently: "We have the quality to go all the way.”

The Black Satellites started slowly at the last finals, losing their opening two games to France and Spain before beating USA and scraping through to the round of the last 16 as one of the best third-placed team. In the knock-out stage the west Africans found their form and wins against the two-time champions Portugal and Chile saw them in the semi-finals. Although they were beaten by France, their campaign ended on a high as they trounced Iraq for third. Aboagye says they have learned from the deep run in Turkey. “We understand that the first target will be to get out of the group, and then we'll take it one after the other all the way."

The diminutive midfielder is keen not only to see the team do better than last time around, but he is clear about his individual goals as well. "It has been two years since I won the bronze ball, and I have learned so much during that period. What I desire is for the team to do well and for me to win gold or at least silver in the category of the best player. It is a very big stage and every player dreams of playing in tournaments like this. It is not every day that you get to play at such a level and if given the chance, you grab it and hope to go a step further."

Playing at the World Cup changed my life a whole lot.

Aboagye, who qualified for New Zealand with the Black Satellites after the team finished third at the CAF U-20 Championship in March, is confident that the African sides will impress Down Under. “The level of play at the AYC was inspiring. The African game is growing. It is always a great feeling to see other teams you know, from the same continent and with players you have engaged with before, do well.

"I will be happy to see them progress in New Zealand. It would be a shame if this did not happen, because they have so many talented players. I believe they have what it takes to do well, and I am hoping they live up to my expectations for them."

Life changing at the last U-20s

Aboagye started his professional career with Accra-based club Inter Allies, but signed a contract with Italian Serie A side Udinese before the U-20 World Cup in Turkey. "Playing at the World Cup changed my life a whole lot. I had already signed for Udinese, but I got the whole world watching and Granada came calling afterwards. People were talking about me during the tournament. My game also got better, because I learned throughout the tournament from our opponents, from my team-mates and from other players.”

After the U-20 World Cup, Aboagye settled in at Spanish La Liga club Granada, starting out in the reserve side that features in the third tier of Spanish football. He debuted in the senior side in a Copa del Rey match earlier this year against Sevilla. "I thank God I got the chance to play the first game. It was a good day for me and I wish there will be more of such days and better.”

Disappointingly, it was to remain his only senior appearance to date, although he has been a regular in the reserve side. “It is the dream of every player to get more playing time at every level for club or country. I hope the same, and I wish I was playing a lot more. But most of the other players are older than me and I have hope that my time is coming soon. I just have to keep working and improve so that I will be ready when that moment comes." And who knows: maybe another star-making performance at the U-20 World Cup will boost his career yet again.

I agree with the lads. Nacho and Success are playing and training under challenging conditions. Their technical knowledge will be ahead of Awoniyi. No doubt Awoniyi is a bright talent but I see Success and Nacho beating him to the striking role.

I watched on of Success' Granada games and the commentator kept on hailing Success for his impressive contributions to his team.

I trust the Manchester City approach for Nacho. The most talented player in recent club formation lead the teams in scoring.

In the past, we have the talented ones like Maradona, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Okocha creating for the less talented players. However, the talented ones are the ones that lead the goal scoring tasks.

Aguero - Started as a creative midfielder but now he is the lead striker for Argentina.
Messi - Lead the attack for Guardiola.
Same thing with the likes of Tevez and Suarez.

Nacho is the most prolific in the team. If he makes it to the camp early, he should lead the attack. I hope Manu Garba allows Nacho lead the team upfront.
