Monitor your brake pad thickness and don't let the pads wear down to metal :this will cause damage to your brake rotors (discs) at least and possibly your calipers as well. Rotors and calipers are much more expensive to replace than pads. There is no such thing as "cleaning" a brake pad while it is still on a car - the friction between the pad and rotor will eradicate any outside substance almost immediately.

Rotate the tires:Changing tire position is very important and reduces uneven wear and tear on the tread, thus extending the life of the tires. The recommended rotation cycle is twice a year or every 6,000 miles. Rotate them diagonally - front right to rear left and front left to rear right. However, this pattern can change depending on the drivetrain of the vehicle, and the type of tire. Your vehicle manual will contain detailed rotation information. Keep in mind some tires (especially on sports cars) are directional and are meant to spin only one way. They will have a large arrow on the sidewall to indicate this.

Keep the tires inflated:Under-inflated tires can reduce the tire life by 15% and will slightly decrease your gas mileage, perhaps by 10%. Inflating tires is perhaps the easiest of all activities, and many stores sell tire gauges for a very small cost. Checking your tire pressure every other time you get gas will reduce tire wear and prevent these issues. Monitor your tire tread with a penny. Insert the penny into the tread with Lincoln's head down. If the top of his head is not obscured by the tread, your tires need to be replaced. Basically, if you can see all of Lincoln's head, you must replace your tires.

Keep the front end aligned:If you notice your car shaking while driving at high speeds (not while braking - shuddering while braking indicates warped rotors), or if your tread is wearing unevenly, then you may need an alignment. This is also key to extending the life of your tires and will keep the tread even for increased safety.

Wax to protect your car’s paint job:No way around it! Waxing your car is work. But it’s satisfying work that will help keep your car looking new. Car wax preserves paint by slowing oxidation and forming a barrier against bird droppings, sap, and pollution. Plus driving a nice shiny car is just plain fun.

Get your car off to a good start every time you drive it:Start the car and drive off slowly and gently until the car reaches operating temperature. This reduces the strain on the engine while the oil is still cold and thicker. Another option is to use electric engine space heaters, and start the drive with a warm engine. Accelerate promptly to the target speed. For most modern cars, idling a cold engine is both counterproductive and wasteful. Additionally, as you accelerate, release the gas a bit to cause the automatic transmission to upshift while you are not pressing hard on the gas. This causes less wear on the internal clutches. It is easier on the clutches for the car to shift when you ease up on the gas.

Use your parking brake:Even if you are driving a car with an automatic transmission, use your parking brake regularly, especially if you're parked on an incline. It helps keep the brakes adjusted in the rear of the car and makes them last longer. Do not use your parking brake in the winter time because your brake will freeze and it will be stuck until it thaws out.

Wash your car:Road salt, sludge and pollution can lead to costly body work. Without regular cleaning, you can start to notice rust on the bottom of your doors within four years. Another three to four years and the corrosion will creep to underbody components, like brake lines. It can cost thousands in rust-related repairs if you neglect to wash your car, especially near ocean/gulf shorelines where the road sand or morning dew might be salty.

b]Check the Tread[/b]:Most tyres have tread wear indicator bars built in which are small bumps at the minimum legal tread that you are allowed to have. If you can see the little bumps then you need to change your tyres and they have probably already reached an illegal state. The legal limit is 1.6mm of tread but it's always a good idea to get your tyres checked with a garage if they've got to 3mm or less as driving is likely to be unpredictable with less than 3mm, especially in bad weather.

Take Care of Your Tyres:Most of us don't bother checking our tyres unless we think there's a problem or it's time for the MOT, but over a quarter of tyres on the UK's roads are unroadworthy. Having damaged tyres can be really dangerous so it's important that yours are in tip top condition - and there is plenty that you can do to make sure that your tyres stay in good shape.

Check your Windows and Mirrors:Dark mornings and evenings can reduce visibility by quite a surprising amount. Make sure your windows and mirrors are kept clean and smear free. De-mist your windows and clear off any snow or ice that has built up while you've been away from your car. Don't wait until you drive off then find a huge pile of snow and ice falls off the roof, covering your windscreen while you're trying to drive - it could prove disastrous.

Windscreen Wipers:Windscreen wipers can cause problems with visibility if the blades are old and create smears. Check them regularly and change them if they look worn or straggly.
It's worth remembering that although you can't stop your car from needing repairs now and again, keeping it in a good, roadworthy condition can help keep your bills down and keep you on the right side of the law. Taking a few minutes each week to ensure your car is in tip-top condition is well worth it in the long run.

Check the Battery:Batteries will usually last for around 3 years, but you shouldn't rely on this. Watch out for flickering warning lights, low beams and make sure that your battery is fully charged. If you think it is underperforming at all, then replace it. It's not worth taking the risk of ending up stranded somewhere.

Drain the existing oil:Make sure the engine is cool and turned off. Find out where the drain plug is, place a container underneath it and remove the plug (you might need an oil filter wrench to carry this out). When the oil stops coming out, put the plug back in.

Drive Smoothly:Driving smoothly is an advisable form of motoring at the best of times, but this is especially true if you are looking to save fuel. This involves smooth acceleration and braking (no sharp reactions on either), and changing gear as and when you need to (rather than continuing at a lower gear than you actually need because you think that it will save fuel). If you drive a BMW or Audi car, you can take advantage of their gearstick indicators that advise when to change gear. Anticipating and being aware of potential hazards before they pose a problem is an important part of maintaining a smooth driving style.

Check Tyre Pressures:Keeping a close eye on your car's tyre pressures whenever you fill up with fuel is a good idea. If your tyres are just 2 psi below their correct pressure, your fuel consumption can increase by 1%. Although you might think that this won't necessarily make a huge difference to your yearly fuel costs, it will all soon start to add up.

Choose your Oil Carefully:If you are going to take along your own oil for the service, you'll need to know which one to buy. Oils fall into three differing kinds, the most expensive type of oil is fully synthetic oil, followed by semi-synthetic, with mineral bringing up the rear as the cheapest type of motor oil.

The Best Method for Washing your Car:Always clean your car from top to bottom. This lets the dirt run down to the ground and you won't be dragging up dirt to the windows where you may possibly scratch them
Make sure you clean your wheels after you've washed the rest of your car. The dirt that is lodged in wheels can contain small stones and if you wash your wheels and then the bodywork, you may end up scratching the paintwork which will cost you money to repair
Rinse the car as thoroughly as you can. Don't throw dirty water over the top. Always use fresh water, preferably from a hose.
Finish off with some car wax or polish. It'll keep your car looking shiny and new, as well as acting as an important barrier against the elements. This means your car paintwork will last longer, saving you money long-term.

How Often Should you Clean our Car:If you want your car to remain in great condition and want it to maintain it's value, you should consider washing it every week. A car that is well cared for will show after a few years and it can be the difference between getting the sale value you want and having to settle for less. If you're on a water metered area and are worried that washing your car every week will cost you in water, use a bucket. You'll use less water overall this way and will keep water costs down.
Keeping your car clean need not be an expensive task. If you want to keep your car clean on a budget, do it yourself, do it often and do it thoroughly – your car and your pocket will appreciate it.

Secure loads to avoid dents and scratches:The beginning of the end for the finish on many cars and trucks — and for wagon and hatchback interiors for that matter — is an improperly stowed load. Invest in the appropriate racks for bicycles, cargo, and luggage. A good trick to keep tall objects from sliding around in a pick-up truck bed is to use a shower curtain rod (or two) as a brace. Just push the cargo against the front wall of the truck bed and install the rod behind it. Twist to secure. Cargo nets will also help keep objects from banging around and damaging a truck bed.

Inspect wheel-well splashguards:These guards, however flimsy on many of today’s cars, help keep water and winter’s salty slush from splashing up into the engine compartment, where it can damage sensitive electrical components. Unfortunately, these guards tear off easily — sometimes without the driver knowing it. Check for damage to these guards when you wash your car. Re-secure with the appropriate fasteners or replace as needed. As added protection from splashed-up muck, slush, and debris, install mud flaps (also called splash guards) on your vehicle.

Give your car a new skin:New self-adhering urethane films have been developed to protect the most vulnerable painted areas on your car from stone chips and other minor abrasions. You can wash and wax these surfaces, just as you would the rest of the paint job. While it’s best to have these films professionally installed, you can peel them off yourself. One product is made by 3M, and you can learn more by going to 3m.com and searching for Scotchgard Paint Protection Film Solutions.

Don’t let tools mar your car’s finish:If you plan to service and make repairs to your car, invest in a fender cover. It drapes over your fender, providing a safe place to rest your tools without causing scratches. It will also prevent your belt buckle from marring your paint as you lean into the engine compartment to work.

Keep the caps on:You step out into driveway ready to start your morning commute only to discover a flat tire. How in the heck did that happen overnight? If the tire valve is missing its cap, the culprit might be a leaky valve. Those little caps keep out dirt and moisture that can cause leaks, so be sure to keep caps on all your tire valves. Another tip: When you replace tires, remind the tire shop that you expect new valves with the tires.

Maintain proper inflation:Under-inflated tires are a tire salesman’s best friend. They create excessive heat and stress that can lead to tire failure. If you want to get every last mile out of your tires, get yourself a tire pressure gauge and use it at least once a month (more in hot weather) to keep your tires inflated to the recommendation in the vehicle’s owner’s manual. Check tires when they are cold (driven for less than one mile) for an accurate reading.

Beware the wet thumb:If you top off your tires at a service station, check to see if there’s moisture coming from the air pump. Simply depress the pin inside the inflator valve with your thumbnail. If your thumb gets wet, advise the station manager that his tanks need to be drained and go to a different station. Moisture, trapped inside a tire, can cause pressure variations and corrode rims.
