joker5180: CLARIFICATION

NMA- nigerian medical association
is a professional body of ALL medical doctors who are registered and licensed to practice in nigeria by medical and dental council of nigeria MDCN. It has branches in all the 36 states of the federation including FCT.

NMA Affiliates
these are groups of medical doctors with common interests, they are affiliated to NMA and can independantly embark on strike when the need arises.

1 MDCAN- medical and dental consultants association of nigeria, All consultants belong to this affiliate

2 NDA - nigerian dental association. ALL dentists belongs here
3 MWAN - medical women association of nigeria, ALL women doctors are members

4 NARD - national association of residents doctors, ALL doctors on residency trainning are here

5 NAGGMDP- national association of government general medical and dental practioners, ALL non-specialists doctors working with state and local governments
6 AGPMPN- association of general private medical practioners of nigeria, ALL non- specialist doctors in private practice

7 NADUHS- national association of doctors in university health services, ALL doctors working in university clinics.
Whenever you hear of doctors strike kindly ask questions to find out which group of doctors are on strike. As far as I am aware this is the 2nd time NMA NATIONAL is embarking on strike in the last 4years.

So why all the noise, take your sick to the pharmacist, physiotherapist , MLS and nurses, no one is stopping you. MDCAN is Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria

double0seven: To me all the ranting of the doctor about the confusion that will result from other health professionals being made doctors.

Now, seriously... we know that Medical Practice didn't start in Nigeria.

The question is this: in US, UK, Canada and other advanced countries, do other health professionals like Pharmacist, Nurses, Physiotherapist advance in their careers to become consultants? From all indications it seem that do.

So why should Nigeria be different because Nigerian doctors says.

Secondly because these other health professionals can advance to become consultants, does it mean that jus and dick & harry nurse, pharmacist etc can become a consultant?

I'm sure that's not the case. I'm sue there are stringent requirements for them to become consultants.

In solving this issue, I believe the government should just follow global best practices.

But for doctors to put up blanket no against other professionals becoming consultants seems wrong.

You're right about there being Consultants in other fields abroad. Global best practice is a loose word being thrown around here for personal gains.
The role of a Consultant here in the country called Nigeria is something that Nigeria isn't ripe for and it's going to turn the health sector into turmoils.
Our hospitals are below anything that could be called a Specialist Hospital. There's no real job description in the health sector.
The first set of Consultants that were appointed disrupted the Working in the places they appointed them. I'll give some examples here.
1. A right thinking person would assume that the appointment if a consultant nurse would mean that she'd probably carry out her Nursing Care to a global and world standard but that wasn't the case. The only thing it achieved was that of a Nurse telling a Doctor that he can't dress a wound as she had already done the wound dressing and the Doctor can't open it again. I would have expected that she would have imparted more knowledge to her student Nurses by telling them what to do during Medical rounds , intelligent questions to ask and what their profession is about.
2. Same could be said of the appointed Pharmacist. Can't go into the details right now.
What obtains outside means there's an evolving field as I can give you links to infightings in the health sector over there.
Until there's a clear job description in the country and there's a real relativity in place in terms of salary and remuneration .....we shouldn't be talking of what's obtainable there as the salary differences between there and here aren't the same thing.

Nigerian B.mls have been evaluated to be of US standard. Nigerian scientists pass the NCA and ASCP exams with ease to work as MLScientists in U.S and Canadian labs.

Nigerian M.bbs is NOT an International standard. MD is d real deal.

U.S and U.K hospital DO NOT employ Nigerian docs instantly. They are made to write USMLE which is very highly competitive for non-US and non-Canadian trained docs and chances are very slim for these foreign-trained physicians in the U.S.

Stop misleading people.

We've settle this issue in my previous posts on a different thread.
My guy MBBS is an international standard o abeg stop disgracing ur self.americans call theirs MD while other call it MBBS(medicine bachelor bachelor of surgery) in such country you get MD when u attain a phd degree in a medical course. Yes u have to write usmle before u practice as a foriegn dr in usa. Also any foreign dr has to write our foriegn medical exam here in nigeria before u practise here in nigeria.there is diversity in medicine in the tropics and in temprate region is not fully a textbook tin but practical based. Example in nigeria most people wit fever r likely to have malaria while abroad is more of a viral stuff. Also medicine in devolping nation like nigeria where u battle with issues of finance and avalabity of infrastrutre has to reflects in ur management so is even more difficult practicing here. Pls appreciate the effort of our doctors. Doctors has been a constant in this equation.

American doctor here. Its sad how terrible Nigerian doctors are treated. Having to beg for common supplies and funding to maintain hospitals to adequate standards. Its unfortunate that patients are being abandoned, but the Nigerian government has shown time and time again that it doesn't give a damn about serious issues facing the country until life and limb is at stake.

I support my Nigerian colleagues in their fight to actually receive payment and support for their services.

First, mbbs is at best a third-rate
qualification, and it's being
supplanted by MD, the
international standard.

Actually the implementation of FG-JOHESU agreement was 'put on hold' temporarily and NMA was ask to suspend strike action and maintain status quo while negotiations were initiated. Our 'demi gods' in NMA flouted the order.

Therefore you have no moral right to refer to a judgement you chose to disobey. NMA is a lawless bunch.

If we had good and enough medical litigation lawyers in Nigeria, many physicians will be in jail. They have never obeyed ANY COURT ORDER.

Nigerians 'small gods' say are greater than you and constitution.

Lack of proper information is what is killing people in Nigeria. NMA and JOHESU never had any issue before now. The court injunction u are talking about was d injunction given by d NIC on a case between JOHESU and MDCAN. That was why MDCAN opted out of the strike few days ago, in order to obey that court ruling.

I still repeat that JOHESU enjoys misinforming the public and the self-same public enjoy being fooled around because they are too lazy to do some basic research for themselves.

When lecturers were on strike last year, people never tried to understand their point of view. They were just castigating and pointing fingers. How do u expect them to continue negotiating and signing agreements with the FG when history has shown that the FG never honours any agreements. It is the same way with doctors.

It is not the job of d doctor to provide quality healthcare. It is the job of the government. That is what every one whould understand. If illiteracy and laziness will allow us, let us look at the healthcare systems of other countries and see how much the govt does to promote good health care systems.

Okay. Look at the fight against Boko haram. It has been reported severally that those terrorists have better arms than our own military. But has dat made the govt to increase funding for the army in order to better equip it? No, it hasn't.

ASUP lecturers have been on strike for how many months now. And what is d government doing about it?

Until we realise where our problems are coming from, we will keep going around in circles.

@ op or funke wateva, if actually u re a good journalist what I expected you to do before the strike is wat I call investigative journalism. Meaning you should get a video camera probably a spy camera, pretend to be a medical student in an elective posting, cover every dept in a teaching hospital, ask intelligent questions, cover night calls, monitor nd observe then you can make a video documetry for the public to view.
When will our media learn to do a proper work?

The court rule declared that all interested parties should sheathe their swords, return to work and maintain status quo. NMA is an INTERESTED PARTY BUT TOLD THE COURT TO GO TO HELL.
Whichever way you look at it NMA can not be exonerated from being lawless. You don't need to be a plaintiff or defendant to obey laws and court orders.

...And stop the sermons
You tell Nigerians that they don't deserve to have their own Director/Consultant pharmacists, Scientists, Nurses, physios just because of your ego and insecurity and then expect Nigerians to applaud you?

Many Nigerians have these important professionals as family members. So it is easy to see NMA as a selfish bunch.

MD in the US is equivalent to MBBS in the UK and Nigeria and some other countries and also equivalent to MBBch in yet other countries. And they are all basic medical degrees (first degree). When you talk about MD in the UK, it is an advanced medical degree.

And nobody has ever said or painted d picture that US and UK are scrambling for Nigerian docs. It was only said that nigerian-trained docs can compete favorably with their counterparts from other parts of the world.
