When that US Blackhawk helicopter was downed by a lucky RPG7 shot fired from one of the fighters swarming the streets of Mogadishu back in the 1990s, that aircraft rated close to the leading edge of combat rotor-wing technology at that time.

That infamous 'Blackhawk Down" episode remains a stark reminder to ALL helicopter crews flying into enemy territory today, that even with the latest electronic and weaponry system upgrades, those whirly-birds always present a slower and easier target for small-arms ground fire, and when hit, are more prone than a fixed-wing jet to depart from controlled flight and crash due to helicopters' inherently lower threshold at which catastrophic aerodynamic imbalance results from bullet or shrapnel impacts.

The utterly heroic air-warriors who crew those helicopter gunships are a breed apart, for while the fast-air jet-jockeys merely scream in treetop-low at 300 knots to deliver the big boom before peeling off towards the sun or the deck in escape and evade mode, the helicopter gunboats methodically orbit the field of battle, when the air is thickest with hot flying metal and tracer, to deliver precision death on the ground in luminous columns, while knowing full well that in doing so they become the primary focus of a sustained fire-storm sent skyward both by conventional anti-aircraft crews, but also from every enemy soldier with a rifle or grenade-launcher handy, and a momentary glimpse of the low-flying quarry.

If it turns out that the Nigerian Air Force helicopter that crashed on this day was in fact downed by enemy fire, such a loss is a known risk during all armed conflicts in which air-power is exercised, and therefore must NOT be ascribed to any perceived error on the part of the flight crew who took to the skies to save their mother-land from the ravages of invasion and conquest by slave-raiding demons masquerading as "holy warriors".

Helicopters can be replaced with small outlays of state funding, but to rescue the pilot and crew of that bird, be they alive at this time, NO EXPENSE MUST BE SPARED in the quest to extract those heroes from enemy territory, and get them the best medical attention that money can buy. All other flight crews going into this war will watch intently how this critical rescue operation will be accomplished, and a safe arrival of all living airmen will serve as an ENORMOUS boost to morale each time the fliers saddle up for battle.

LMAyedun: BREAKING: Nigerian Air Force Jet crashes in Borno

A Nigerian Air Force Mi-35 Helicopter on a training mission has crashed, the Defence Headquarters has said.

The jet crashed this afternoon due to technical fault at a location South of Bama, Defence spokesperson, Chris Olukolade, said in a statement made available to PREMIUM TIMES.

The statement did not say whether anyone was killed or injured in the crash.

Mr. Olukolade, a Major General, said investigation has commenced to unravel the circumstances leading to the accident.

He however said the accident was not a result “of any enemy action”.
Further details on the crash, Mr. Olukolade said, would be made known as investigation progresses.

Bama is one of the locations in the North-east state of Borno where the extremist Boko Haram sect has intensified its terrorist activities.

N/b:- nobody is above mistake..keep dat in mind

It is 'A Helicopter'.

Just like 'a hotel', 'a hospital'.
