I love this move. And Labour Law needs to be reviewed. I hate this strike strike things. Although, FG might be sturborn at times. But is strike the only measure? All they care about is money. They always complain about politicians earning more, let them drop their stethoscopes and join politics. Afterall, they said that if you think involving in politics is very bad, the punishment you'll receive is that you'll be ruled by fools.

Certainly, there's going to be a regulatory body just like NAFDAC... FG can create a better structure for the better implementation of this policy. Teaching Hospitals are death traps and most of our doctors are lazy. Me, myself and I support this move whether UNA like am or not. You're entitle to your own point of view.

Judging by the comments of nigerians as represented here on nairaland,it is obvious nigerian doctors av overstretched their bounds..they av lost whatever respect nigerians av for them.d incessant strike by these bodies,(ASUU inclusive ) are now seen as self serving, and not in d interest of d masses as they often claim..before anybody blame govt,he or shld first look at their demands and make an informed opinion if he were to be d president what would be his stand on their demand
Re: FG Moves To Privatise Hospitals by eaglechild: 12:47am On Jul 29, 2014
The health sector is one of the few sectors that is heavily subsidised and funded by the government in the developed world.

Most countries in western Europe whose citizens enjoy the best level of health care do so because of well packaged insurance and free health services enjoyed by citizens.

If the health sector is privatised, cost of health care will sky rocket beyond reach and we will see all our health indices slide.

Health care is not power or telecommunications, it is something that MUST be had by all.
If an ebola patient cannot assess care, their is risk of infecting the whole community rich or poor.

Whatever the case doctors will still benefit.

Re: FG Moves To Privatise Hospitals by Neatboy(m): 12:51am On Jul 29, 2014
Even when you go to these hospitals they'll barely attend to you. Everytime they'll be forming busy, and busy doing nothing. They don't value life at all. In fact, to me, the Nigeria Medical Association is fast metamorphosing into a cult group. No dignity in labour again. The spirit of patriotism is long dead and our value system is in shambles.

Everything in this country is just looking so tiring, first it was telecoms which is now doing fine anyway next is real estate and now is the HEALTH SECTOR, can someone tell me what this government is capable of doing? They prefer privatising everything and start collecting heavy tax... This country is just too funny. Very soon they will still privatize Nigeria itself.

With the way the clowns in that cesspit keeps privatising everything, they might end up privatising the government as well.

Funny country - do the people even understand that they're selling off all the country's assets with the excessive privatisation thingy?

I actually feel sorry for the future generations. undecided
Re: FG Moves To Privatise Hospitals by minkawe: 1:19am On Jul 29, 2014
Why the shout?, I ask. If government go in the way of privatization, everybody is going to suffer excluding politicians and the super rich. The reason for the long tussle on ObamaCare is because many Americans cannot access healthcare whereas the bloated Republicans could not see that as long as they have donations from Capitalist Ventures. Doctors will get jobs with their juicy pays; only now you get paid for job done, which makes it important for them to sit their ass down. Pharmacists are going to be mainly streamlined to Industry and few that can cope with rural setting, would sticki to community practise, provided doctors are not lured to some centers by "rural allowance". The Nurses will find no difficulty sticking to their job description; the competition only becomes stiffer and working hours might skyrocket with even lower pay. Many of the health workers who hitherto have a "stable" job in quote will have to find their bearing where destiny leads them.
Patients would be the worst hit because there is no way the income generated by the government hospital be a match to the salary being doled out on monthly basis, so balancing the account book would fall on the patients after several staffs have found their way out hospital.
Another possibility is massive emigration of Nurses and Doctors out of the country, especially, the young and agile ones with consequent depletion of the available workforce which has its own attendant health risk and financial implications.Canadians can tell you better. When labour unions, professional unions and general populace canvass for somethings, I guess they really don't know the ripple effect of achieving those things might cost them in the end.
In summary, the suffering will cut across board. Be prepared!!!

Yea, you made a nice point, they might benefit in anyways, but, atleast they'll start taking their jobs more serious. Have you ever heard of government hospitals in the developed world? Even if government gives them the whole money in its treasury it will even make them morethan lazy. Just for the fact that they are occupying a great space in our society doesn't mean that they aren't questionable. And I still don't know why they (Medical Doctor) and University Lecturers like playing God. You'll barely find a lecturer that can ever think that he's wrong in any situation. Humility has totally eluded them all.

Health is the biggest business my little friend.
When you privatise the hospitals ,cost of treatment will skyrocket ,health insurance companies will spring up here and there forcing us to take health insurances due to highly priced medical services which will prompt many doctors to go private and the competition will be so stiff that most hospitals will go extra Miles to have a better customer base and bang healthcare will become cheaper than MTN line. And do not forget that all the insurance companies will employ people ,the private clinics will employ efficient people with better package in other to maintain a better outlook and be more appealing to the growing Nigerian middle class and there you have the foundation of a better health service and the services we get from our frustrated Nurses.

Don't also forget that future govts, and states can make policies that will ensure that medical services for certain people is subsidiesed just like what we have in Rivers State where elderly people and children do not pay for health services as long as they have the required papers.

With proper planning and strong regulatory bodies alot can be achieve. Since Nigerians are oblivious of what health insurance is. Government has to enlighten the public. I believe, this should be inclusive in the planning process. If government really is determined it can niche a nice plan that will serve as shock-absorber or parliatives. I really want these dudes to be engaged like their counterparts in overseas
