JANUARY, 2013

ABUJA—The Federal Government achieved 6,443 mega watts of electricity power, at the end of last year, the Minister of State (Power), Mrs. Zainab Kuchi disclosed yesterday.

Kuchi noted that power transmission peaked at 4517.6mw on December 23, 2012 due to additional 450mw generated in the fourth quarter.
According to her, the Federal Government would continue to pursue its action plan towards the realization of the 10, 000 mega watts at the end of the year.

This she said, would be achieved through the implementation of a variety of strategies which would include funding the sector through private sector participation.

Besides, sources of the power generation would be expanded to include renewable energy and rural electrification.

Similarly, Mrs. Kuchi said government would fund power transmission projects outside budgetary provisions.

Also speaking, the Spokesman of the Transmission Company Nigeria, TCN, Dave Ifabiyi, said his organization would work assiduously towards a consistent upscale performance of the sector.

“As gas supply continues to improve and more National Integrated Power Projects (NIPPs) come on stream, the transmission and distribution companies will continue to harness every available generation to ensure that stable electricity supply is delivered to electricity customers”, he said.

APRIL 27, 2013

The federal government has restated its plan to achieve 10,000 Megawatts of electricity by the end of the year.

The permanent secretary of the Ministry of Power, Mr Godknows Igali told journalists in Abuja that the country has returned to more than 4,000 MW after dropping by 1,000 a week ago.

Mr Igali assured Nigerians that the country will strive to achieve 10,000MW by the end of the year when the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) projects are completed.

The ministry official also claimed that power supply has improved as he assured Nigerians of better days ahead.

He affirmed that Nigerians now enjoy an average of 16 hours steady electricity supply without interruption.

He described this as a major leap from the past, adding that with the on-going overhaul of the power sector, the current generation rate will soar and ultimately lead to uninterrupted power supply.

Another major complaint was the issue of hidden charges paid by Nigerians especially those who use the prepaid meters.

10,000 Megawatts Not Realisable By December, Says Nebo

Blueprint for private sector’s investment in transmission underway

GOING by existing realities, the country’s goal of attaining 10,000 megawatts (mw) of electricity by December is not realisable, according to the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo.

The minister spoke to reporters in Abuja on the goal set by his predecessors and some other government officials.

But he said that something close to the figure would be realised in December, stressing that 10,000mw would be achieved by first quarter of 2014 based on a professional and realistic analysis of the sector

“As an engineer and knowing the realities on ground, we will achieve this by first quarter of 2014. We need time to achieve part of the target. We will get close to it, but the truth is that we cannot get 10,000mw by December,” he said
.

Meanwhile, the controversy trailing the Bureau of Public Enterprises’ (BPE) decision to sell the Enugu Distribution Company despite the existence of a 20-year pact with Aba Power Limited that ring-fenced the Aba Business Zone to the firm seems to have ended. This is because Nebo promised yesterday that government would respect the agreement.

The Guardian had reported recently that efforts by the BPE to privatise the entire Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) despite the existence of a 20-year lease agreement which the Federal Government entered into with a private concern for the management of the Aba metropolis was creating a fresh concern over the privatisation programme of government.

The Federal Government, the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA, as it was then known) and Aba Power Limited entered into a lease agreement on April 28, 2005 for the distribution of power to the ring-fenced residential and commercial consumers at Aba, Abia State. The contract covered Aba Business Unit and Ariaria Business Unit, both of which form part of Enugu Distribution Company (Enugu Disco).

Following the agreement, the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in 2006 granted a licence to Aba Power Limited to distribute power within the ring-fence.

On December 12, 2012, a group of chieftains under the umbrella of Ndigbo Lagos, led by Prof. Anya O. Anya, wrote to President Goodluck Jonathan asking him to respect the terms of the agreement with Aba Power Limited.

The Federal Government went ahead on February 20, 2013 and signed an agreement with bid winners of the Enugu Distribution Company, Interstate Consortium.

But in a swift reaction, Wole Olanipekun & Co on February 21, 2013 advised the general public to desist from any act, purchase or negotiation in respect of any offer to sell, lease, transfer any right in the Enugu Disco, which does not expressly exclude Aba and Ariaria Business Units.

But responding to questions on what government was doing to resolve the impasse, Nebo told reporters: “Government intends to honour the agreement with Aba Power Limited for the ring-fenced Aba and Ariaria Business Units.”

Reviewing the state of the power sector, the minister also called on Nigerians to exercise a little more patience with government as the power reform agenda would be executed.

On the generation capability, he stressed: “Currently, installed available generation capacity has risen to 6,000mw. Peak generation is slightly above 4,500mw. We intend to add additional generation capacity of about 2,200mw from the NIPP projects (1,896mw), IPPs (292mw) and FGN legacy assets (514mw) before the end of 2013.

“The Federal Government is also investing heavily to boost generation through large, medium and small hydros with a total capacity of over 4,234mw.”

He said a $3.4 billion investment would be required to expand the transmission grid to be able to evacuate all the generated power.

He said the ministry was collaborating with the Finance Ministry to work out a blueprint for private sector’s investment in transmission, stressing once again that the Transmission Company of Nigeria would not be sold to a private concern, but would remain a government-owned entity.

In a bid to address the shortfall of electricity supply being experienced in the country, the Federal Government has developed short term intervention strategy to add 370mmcf/d gas supply that will push up power generation capacity to 5,000 megawatts within the next five months.

This step is under a new cross sectoral approach conceived by the Ministries of Petroleum Resources, Power, National Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and other stakeholders to address inadequate electricity supply.
The new target of 5,000 MW is however a shortfall from the earlier projected 6000MW which Federal Government targets to achieve by December.

Addressing a joint press conference, yesterday, in Abuja, to unveil the new development, the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alision-Madueke, said the CBN would pay off N25 billion legacy debt owed to gas suppliers in order to restore confidence to stakeholders.

The minister said the government had resolved to find a lasting solution to abysmal power supply in the country.
Diezani was assisted by the Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo, Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, Managing Director of PPMC, Mr. David Ige, Chairman of NERC, Dr. Sam Amadi and the new Group Managing Director of NNPC, Joseph Dawha, as well as other stakeholders.

@OP, so in your warped mind, you assumed power generation to be 'let there be LIGHTS......and there was LIGHT' undecided so if past administrations (right from Tafawa Balewa to Obasanjo's) were to be on the same equal measurements of scrutiny that Jonathan's administration had been subjected to, you'll still believe that they performed better in the area of power generation than Jonathan considering the rate at which more residential and industrial estates are springing up across the Country now?

oh my tomakint from "ondo". This is so expected of you. Your epistle didn't address the lies, fake promises and propaganda of pdp and Jonathan. Please address the issue and stop calling names of leaders since independence. Bros, make I summarise? Okkay...
In Jan, 2013 FG said they archieved 6,443 mega watts @ the end of 2012 and will achiieve 10,000 MW @ by December 2013

On April 27, 2013: FG said Nigeria is generating more that 4,000 MW and will achieve 1000MW by December 2013.

On May 1st, 2013: FG said the 1000MW target of December is not feasible but something close will be achieved. In the words of the Minister.... “Currently, installed available generation capacity has risen to 6,000mw. Peak generation is slightly above 4,500mw. We intend to add additional generation capacity of about 2,200mw from the NIPP projects"

But 3 August, 2014: The same FG is projecting a 5000MW target by december 2014. Imagine 500MW plan...

What went wrong? And you all pro-GEJ have been telling his that "electricity has improved". Are we progressing or retrogressing?

What a shame.

This admin has taken deceit to an all new level and the people can't seem to understand that as long as they keep repeating thesame task using thesame methods over and over again, they would continuously get thesame results!

All these failures are so glaring the govt couldn't but rely on the sentiments of the people by propagating ethnoreligious politicking that would no doubt ensure their continuous hold on power and the perpetual subjugation of the population.

the veil of deceit is gradually getting off nigerians. Their ethnoreligious politics and "blame APC" style of governance will be their greatest undoing. I am sure Nigerians will be more interested in getting them to account for their stewardship. The country is retrogressing and the rate of retrogression is in a all time high. Going by the words of the government we can see that even the government agrees that we are retrogressing

PDP has nothing to offer Nigeria as per the power sector because the Party, since 1999, continues to produce Presidential candidates who do not have the sacrificial nature, selflessness and unshakeable will required to tackle the power woes of Nigeria. The other problem is that Nigerians are too divided to ask for what others elsewhere would as minimum dividends of democracy.

The many broken promises of the PDP in the power sector, over 15 years, should mean that Nigerians should be unanimously united in concluding that it is pointless placing any hope in the PDP. Sadly this is not the case because of ethno-religious bias. Many are clannishly supporting misrule, with the power sector being one of the most poignant indicator of this misrule, because of ethno-religious affiliation to the head of the current government. Were Nigeria a nation where majority of her people are able to think critically and without sentiments, then it would be agreed that the PDP is and continues to be about "deception" in regards to the power sector.
