Why it Doesn't Compare:

When some Hollywood producer wanted to make a movie based on Murphy's autobiography, he was determined to have Murphy play himself in the film.

Murphy was afraid people would see the complete insane awesomeness the
story had to offer, and think he was embellishing or trying to cash in on his
fame, so he actually had them take parts out for fear that they wouldn't be
believable to a Hollywood audience. Seriously.

Who Was He?

Yogendra Singh Yadav was a member of an Indian grenadier battalion during a conflict with Pakistan in 1999. Their mission was to climb "Tiger Hill" (actually a big-*ss mountain), and neutralize the three enemy bunkers at the top.

Unfortunately, this meant climbing up a sheer hundred-foot cliff-face of solid
ice. Since they didn't want to all climb up one at a time with ice-axes, they
decided they'd send one guy up, and he'd fasten the ropes to the cliff as he
went, so everyone else could climb up the sissy way. Yadav, being awesome,
volunteered.

Half way up the icy cliff-o'-doom, enemies stationed on an adjacent mountain opened fire, shooting them with an RPG, then spraying assault-rifle fire all over the cliff. Half his squad was killed, including the commander, and the rest were scattered and disorganized. Yadav, in spite of being shot three times, kept climbing.

When he reached the top, one of the target bunkers opened fire on him with
machine guns. Yadav ran toward the hail of bullets, pitched a grenade in the
window and killed everyone inside. By this point the second bunker had a
clear shot and opened fire, so he ran at them, taking bullets while he did, and
killed the four heavily-armed men inside with his bare hands.
Meanwhile, the remainder of his squad was standing at the top of the cliff
staring at him saying, "dude, holy shit!" They then all went and took the third
bunker with little trouble.

For his gallantry and sheer ballsiness, he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military award. Unlike the Medal of Honor, the Param Vir Chakra is only given for "rarest of the rare gallantry which is beyond the call of duty and which in normal life is considered impossible to do." That's right, you actually have to break the laws of reality just to be eligible.

And we imagine the medal (Image 3) looks like two, brass testicles.
It has only been awarded 21 times, and two thirds of the people who earned it died in the process. It was initially reported that Yadav had as well, but it turns out that they just mistook him for someone less badass. Or they just figured no real human being could survive a broken leg, shattered arm and 10-15 fresh bullet holes in one sitting.

That whole Winter War in Finland was f'ing unbelievable. If you get a chance, google it. There is also a movie in Finnish on the Winter War, unbelievable. They were the ONLY nation to STOP the friggin RED ARMY in their tracks after they had overran basically all of Europe. Just dusted them in the forests with guerrilla war tactics on skis. They lured tanks out onto frozen lakes where they sank, ran up to tanks to jam the treads and threw Molotov cocktails into the turret holes. Google "Mannerheim Steamroller" if you want a good read. Finland handed Russia's azz back to them and decimated their ranks into the millions even while outnumbered 10 to 1. Good reading if you are a war buff.

The Incredible Story of Finnish Sniper Simo Hayha

Simo Häyhä aka “The White Death” is widely regarded as the most hardcore sniper there ever was, with over 500 kills to his name. He helped defend his homeland from the Soviets during World War II. Here is his story.
Humble Beginnings

Depending on the record, Simo Häyhä was born in either 1905 or 1906 in the farming town of Rautajärvi. Once the Soviet Union was formed and Finland had gained its independence, the town in which he lived found itself to be only a very short distance from the Russian border. His childhood was filled with plenty of hard work on the farm, which coupled with the Finnish wilderness made him a very tough – yet patient – man. A few years later in 1925, Häyhä served a mandatory one-year service in Finland’s army. While one year may not be a long time, he obviously made the best of it: by the time he was honorably discharged, he had been promoted to the rank of corporal.

Later on, Häyhä joined the Finnish Civil Guard, a military organization comparable to the National Guard in the United States. During his time with the Civil Guard, he received a great deal of training, which included target shooting. Shooting was always an interest for Häyhä, and any spare time he had was spent outdoors shooting at whatever targets he could find. His first rifle was a Russian-built Mosin-Nagant bolt action M91, and was later introduced to the better-performing M28/30 and the 9mm Suomi submachine gun. Thanks to both his training and natural enjoyment of shooting, Häyhä was eventually able to hit a target 16 times per minute at about 500 feet away, making him an excellent sniper—a skill that would later serve him very well.
The Winter War

In 1939, the Soviet Union attempted to invade Finland. Being a member of the Civil Guard, Häyhä was called into service, serving under the 6th Company of JR 34 on the Kollaa River. Commanded by Major General Uiluo Tuompo, the Finns faced both the 9th and 14th Soviet Armies, and at one point were fighting against as many as 12 divisions— about 160,000 soldiers. Also at one point in the same area, there only 32 Finns fighting against over 4,000 Soviets!

Despite being outnumbered, however, the Finns were still victorious at the end of the day. The invading Soviets weren’t as organized as one would expect: they spoke many different languages, and they weren’t used to the harsh Finnish winters either. In fact, the winter of 1939-40 was very snowy, and had temperatures ranging from -40 to -20 degrees Celsius.

The Finns were also smart in their tactics, the most notable of which were known as “Motti”-tactics. Since the Soviets would invade by the roads, the Finns would hide out in the surrounding wilderness. They would then let the invaders cross the border, and attack them from behind!
Becoming “The White Death”

Hayha’s involvement in the Winter War was very extraordinary. With his Mosin-Nagant M91 rifle, he would dress in white winter camouflage, and carry with him only a day’s worth of supplies and ammunition. While hiding out in the snow, he would then take out any Russian who entered his killing zone. Hayha preferred to use iron sights on his gun instead of scopes, as scopes had a tendency to glare in the sunlight and reveal his position. While he may sound like an ordinary sniper, this was far from the case: over the course of 100 days during the winter he racked up over 500 kills, earning him the nickname “The White Death”. The Soviets feared him so much that they mounted numerous counter sniper and artillery attacks to get rid of him, all of which failed miserably. However, on March 6th, 1940, he was hit in the jaw by an explosive round from a counter sniper. He fell into an 11-day coma, awakening on the day that the war ended.
Legacy

Hayha was given numerous awards, and was also promoted from corporal to second lieutenant, a jump in the ranks that had never been seen in Finland’s history. Despite being slightly disfigured, he recovered from his injury, and went on to live until the age of 97. He allegedly attributed his deadly sniping skills to “practice”.

Despite gaining around 22,000 square miles of Finish soil, the Soviets lost the Winter War, with 1,000,000 of their original 1,500,000 troops having been killed by the defending Finns. A Russian general later remarked that the land they had conquered was “just enough to bury their dead”.

Actually, yes. It turns out the history books are full of stories of soldiers doing things so badass they'd hesitate to put them into a film for fear of killing the realism. Like these five, for example:

#5. Simo Hayha

Who Was He?

Simo Hayha had a fairly boring life in Finland. He served his one mandatory
year in the military, and then became a farmer. But when the Soviet Union
invaded his homeland in 1939, he decided he wanted to help his country.
Since the majority of fighting took place in the forest, he figured the best way
to stop the invasion was to grab his trusty rifle, a couple of cans of food and
hide in a tree all day shooting Russians. In six feet of snow. And 20-40
degrees below zero.

Can you spot Hayha in the second image? Neither could the Russians

Of course when the Russians heard that dozens of their men were going down and that it was all one dude with a rifle, they got fucking scared. He became known as "The White Death" because of his white camouflage outfit, and they actually mounted whole missions just to kill that one guy.

They started by sending out a task force to find Hayha and take him out. He
killed them all.

Then they tried getting together a team of counter-snipers (which are
basically snipers that kill snipers) and sent them in to eliminate Hayha. He
killed all of them, too.

Over the course of 100 days, Hayha killed 542 people with his rifle. He took
out another 150 or so with his SMG, sending his credited kill-count up to 705.

Since everyone they had was either too dead or too scared to go anywhere
near him, the Russians just carpet-bombed everywhere they thought he might be. Supposedly, they had the location right, and he actually got hit by a cloud of shrapnel that tore his coat up, but didn't actually hurt him, because he's the freaking White Death, damn it.

Finally on March 6th, 1940, some lucky bastard shot Hayha in the head with
an exploding bullet. When some other soldiers found him and brought him
back to base, he "had half his head missing." The White Death had finally been stopped...

...for about a week. In spite of having come down with a nasty case of shot-
in-the-face syndrome, he was still very much alive, and regained
consciousness on March 13, the very day the war ended.
