Silver has been in use...but mostly as a topical agent. (on the skin).

It may not. Sadly, there isn't any evidence that nano silver has any antiviral activity as regards ebola. It may have some anti-bacterial effect (that is why it is used as a topical antiseptic). Then there is the risk of silver poisoning....since we do not know the concentration at which it would safely kill the virus (or if it would) and not cause silver poisoning.

The problem is we do not know the safe concentration. (That is a part of the reason why drugs undergo invitro, animal and phase 1-3 testing...to know...among other things, the dose at which it can safely have a therapeutic effect...and not harm the patient).

True.

The article Nanosilver particles in medical applications: synthesis, performance, and toxicity will give you more information about the scientific uses of nano silver. Sadly....no evidence for anti-ebola activity...and no studies showing that nanosilver prolongs the life of ebola patients.

My point is that: nano silver isn't a new drug. It's an effective antibacterial drug and no different from whatever antibiotics they might be giving them now.

And since it has no side effects, why no try it on one or two of the dying ones?

It isn't for all Nigerians, just those infected with the incurable virus that can't get zmapp. Or you want them to wait till they die for a zmapp that's non-existent at the moment?

It is not that easy. Silver has severe reactions to other drugs. Any other drug that has been offered are being given under close supervision. They have been studied extensively specifically for Ebola and how it might react with other issues that might arise as a result of Ebola. Colloidal silver is basically a cure all that could kill the already very sick people. The problem with most Nigerians is that they always look for short cuts. Just generally lazy mentally. These sick people do not even have running water in these quarantine clinics even though it's proven that good hygiene etc is necessary to curb this monster. With all the money allocated these people are basically still defecating with no water to flush toilets. These are the issues. It is not pumping them with something that has not been researched. No known dosage. No research done specifically for Ebola.

Where is the brains of these APC people? Why won't they use there brain for once?

Africa will remain enslaved to the evil western world unless, we change and let true love lead.

We have to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery to take charge of our destiny.
Why do pple always go sentimental why didt the federal govt test the drug before approving it to know if it can cure the disease both Lagos and fg are stupid for not belivig in ourselves

In Africa, WE HAVE THE PEOPLE, WE HAVE THE POWER, THE WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE TO LEAD THE WORLD BUT BITTERNESS AND HATERADE WON'T LET US GROW.

Symphony007: Some people mumu no be small!! What concerns APC and PDP in matters of health? Or is that how partisan your brains have gotten? Zmapp has been tested on both monkeys and humans and has proved to work with side effects. Now you want the government to give this new drug that has neither been tested or has no success track record on nigerians? Do you know the side effects, you people are advocating nigerian ebola patients be used as lab rat, and when they are and there is catastrophic after effects even worse than ebola, who will help us? Who? We don't even know the name or company of this fictitious "nigerian scientist in diaspora" that sent the drug. Since we're so desperate as will try anything, why don't we get all our ebola patients into a lab and start injecting them with every chemical compound we can find. Who knows, one might work.
...thanks man...such a number of Nigerians think on emotions rather than facts...NANO silver has never been an antiviral. the closest use of it for human is as a dietary supplement... and some ignorant guys up there are relating this to a APC- PDP feud. Nigerians sometimes make me angry with our seemingly retrogressed reasoning. can we ever move on from giving a conspiracy theory to anything not to our favour?

many Nigerians don't really understand why Americans are skeptical about giving out zmapp. the nature of Ebola has not really been well understood even by the American's. by giving out a drug for curing it without proper clinical trials can lead to a mutation which might lead from the virus been transferred from body fluid's to airborne which will become worse this is an issues of global correlation. the experimental drug as not really been proven even the nano silver. all that ave been said is showing sings of improvement. we need to be very careful not to created a version that may become worse.ethical standards are very important.just because we want to save a few we end up creating an Ebola strain that is drug resistant or which metamorphosed into an airborne strain.pls we need to think

lekanolas: The Lagos State Government has declared its resolve not to use any drug other than the American ZMAPP for the Ebola patients in its custody.

The Commissioner of Health, Dr Jide idris, disclosed this on Friday.

As at Friday evening, it was still sketchy if the drug has arrived the shores of Nigeria.

Dr Idris said the Nano Silver being suggested by the Federal Government by a Nigerian scientist is a natural health product and the state is not ready to take chances with the health of the patients at all.

“Should we have access to ZMAPP now, right away, we will start the administration on the patients.

“We are attending a meeting soon with the Task Force on Ebola to know if the ZMAPP drug is available as stated by the Federal government,”Idris said.

Meanwhile, Idris disclosed yesterday that First Consultant Hospital where the first case of EVD occurred would be reopened soon.

This, he said, followed the mandatory three rounds of state certified decontamination process.

He said the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Clinic, was shut after the detection of a confirmed case of the disease at the facility.

He said the state would facilitate the decontamination process of the clinic, adding: “25 patients and health workers at the facility when the case was detected are presently under surveillance.”.

Zmapp failed in treating a Spanish Priest.

The patients' lives are already at risk.

What is Lagos State government saying?

Between that and patients' death which is more "ethical"?

Nano silver, the trial drug imported into the country on Thursday has been declared unfit and will not be administered to Ebola patients, Minister of health says.

Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu said the experimental drug did not meet required standards, according to reports from TheCable.

Speaking during a press conference at the Federal Nuero Psychiatric hospital at Yaba, Lagos on Saturday, the minister said other trial drugs were undergoing evaluation, and they could be used should they be found suitable eventually.

“You will recall that last Thursday, I announced that we were ready to deploy an experimental drug, Nano Silver, if it was cleared by the national health research committee,” he said. “

Although, the drug had since last Thursday been made available to the emergency operation in Lagos, it had not been administered to any patient, because we were awaiting clearance from the national health research ethics committee.

“I regret to inform you that the drug did not meet the requirements of the national health research ethic code. Accordingly, approval for its use was withheld.

“I wish to inform you that other candidate drugs are currently being evaluated by the Treatment Research Group for EVD. As soon as any of the experimental drug is cleared and made available, we shall include it in the treatment regimen subject to the informed consent of the patient.”

Sometimes u guys can just misfire anyhow without doing your research very well. Who says Nanosilver was discovered by a nigerian? The drug was developed by an american and is yet to undergo certification by USFDA. And in some other countries where it has been certified, its used to fight some bacteria infections and as also pesticides. Is ebola a bacteria? The US has issued out their own advice that if use it, u are at your own risk. The drug has not even be tested on animals with ebola virus unlike ZMAPP and TKZ. Lagos state was right by openly rejecting it. That's the best thing to do. Do u know what it means that a patient died as a result of the drugs given to her? If ZMAPP was tested on africans first without testing it on whites, they would still complain and say "why must it black that should be tested first with ZMAPP serum". The US has offered to give TKZ and now africans are complaining that its the ZMAPP they want. Africans have their own problem. Maybe the Nanosilver might bed food to the virus when it is administered to an ebola infected patient and that will quicken his or her death

Declared unfit by whom? If the US doesn't condemn nano silver how would they sell zmapp to the desperate African nations? Did the very people that condemn nano silver approve zmapp and are making it widely available for their citizens? Why not? So why are they soo willing to make it available to Africans? Zmapp and nano silver are both experimental ...why condemn the local more natural one and be so quick to embrace the pharmaceutical one? Always.... chew before you swallow.

This Dr. Simon Agwale has a PhD in Zoology about parasits he has never study virology or biology and it is a big difference.

I feel he want to make money with this because he has a company in America so he could buy it cheap in america and sell it expensive in Nigeria.

Nice answers, you seem like someone knowledgeable in these things. Whats Ur view on the use if foodgrade hydrogen peroxide? Its know that pathogens can't survive in oxygen, and hydrogen peroxide poses an extra oxygen molecule. I think it might not cure but will surely help.

The way people talk about viruses is unprecedented. I could probably count the number of viruses that there are CURES for on the fingers on my hand.
If it's known that the pathogens can't survive in Oxygen and we should starve them of oxygen....what about our own cells? They should kill the patients with the virus right?
Until Penicillin came....millions died from infections.
The common cold has no vaccine or cure till date(and that's a viral infection too).
HIV has no cure till now....billions have been invested in its research and it's still being invested.
Malaria killed far more than you can count until the antimalarial came( it still does till now though due majorly to people's ignorance - they always present at the 11th hour to the hospital)

Nano silver isn't your everyday antibiotics.
Used topically(on the skin) for burn patients as silver nitrate ..it hasn't been tested on any human.
It would be very wrong and unethical to just pick a drug from nowhere because someone from somewhere said it and start testing it on fellow human beings without any regard to its safety.
The mortality for Ebola is 90% and this particular strain seems to be at 40%....why write them all off and use them as guinea pigs.
What's wrong with giving quality supportive care and proven antibiotics instead of a drug whose name came from nowhere....no history to say it was developed for Ebola at anytime or tested for Ebola at anytime.
The FG and the Minister of Health is to blame.....it is scandalous that our own ministry of health will just open his mouth and declare that they have a drug.
I'll attach a picture of what they told us in the initial stage when we first though it never existed.
