The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southeast zone has rejected the 8,000 polling booths allocated to the entire south by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, who made this known to journalists at the end of their meeting in Umuahia on Saturday, described the allocation as “disservice to the nation”.

“The people of the South-East reject the alleged allocation of polling booths by INEC. We view it as a great disservice to the unity and progress of this country if the entire south will have 8,000 polling booths and the north has 21,000 polling booths.

“We demand that this should be suspended forthwith as it is completely against the spirit of one Nigeria, the unity and progress of our dear country.
“This country belongs to all Nigerians; the South-East should be given its fair share.”

Metuh said that the people and leadership of the party in the zone had resolved to support the re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan.

“Our people have demanded that Jonathan should contest in 2015 and the South-East has resolved to support him unequivocally and unconditionally.

“We are, therefore, joining millions of Nigerians to ask the president to declare for the 2015 presidential election,” he said.
The PDP spokesman said that Nigerians were convinced that the country had witnessed great transformation in the last three-and-a-half years.

He commended the Federal Government, especially the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, for taking `bold initiatives’ to contain the spread of Ebola Virus Disease in the country.
He said that Nigerians were satisfied with the measures so far adopted by the Federal Government to tackle the disease.

Metuh demanded the extension of the period of the continuous voter registration, especially in areas where the exercise was marred by inadequate materials, personnel and mal-functional equipment.

He expressed concern over the recent postings and promotions in the Nigeria Police Force.

He called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba, and the Police Service Commission “to revisit this appointments and promotions with a view to balancing the position”.

The meeting was attended by the governors of Abia and Ebonyi, Theodore Orji and Martin Elechi, respectively, as well as the Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekwerenmadu.

Also in attendance were: Prof. Onyebuchi Cukukwu, Minister of Health; Chief Osita Chidoka, Minister of Aviation; Chief Emeka Wogu, Minister of Labour and Productivity; and PDP chairmen in the five states in the zone.

the whole of North has 21,000 or just the North west? If its the whole of North, then its not a bad thing if SE has 8,000.

Yea if the whole of the north has 21,000, then it is not a big deal and i will advise that Metuh be ignored, but if it is only the northwest, or only northeast or only North central that has that number then it is a shame on INEC and need to be addressed.

But from what Metuh said in paragraph 3 line 2 then i will have to say that the problem of Nigeria is our politicians and we need to get rid of them asap.

The population and land mass of the North far exceeds that of the SE, what is he screaming for? Common sense dictates that a higher number of voters requires a higher number of polling units, otherwise there would be congestion and consequent disenfranchisement of voters.

Yeah,i have seen it. its really pathetic. So,out of 30,000 polling units created recently by INEC,the entire South will get 8,000 alone. Was south having more polling unit than North?

Population is the basis upon which PU's were distributed, considering the amended Electoral act prescribes a maximum of 500 voters per PU. For example, Kano State with 4,751,818 registered voters has 9,809, and Bayelsa State with 590,679 registered voters has 1925 PU's allocated to it.

Based on your logic

The North is 2.5 times the size of the South

Is Kano this populated? I served in the north and for land Mass, they do have but the population are sparse. I think they are just been exaggerated.

Did you do English in school? The issue being discussed is registered voters, which will always reflect population, and not population in itself.
Yes, random sampling on a state to state basis shows that Kaduna is 2.5 times the size of Abia's in terms of voter registration.

No it is only south eastern, do the maths from the table below, south east now has 16k+ of PU out 150k PU, nigerians will vote in the next 6 month with this.

8000 is too small for the whole of south.
We have more population here, including that of registered voters

Adding additional 8000 polling unit for the south east, they still want to complain. Do they want inec to create polling unit on river niger?

16 out of 150?
That is about 10%
Are we alright?

INEC statistics seem murky.

What does the field title "proportional distribution based on 150,000" mean?
Is a better measure not mean voters/per PU?

Why is there an attempt to give each state the same number of PUs?
Shouldn't PU simply be based on number of voters?

It is frightening some one like this has access to restricted government data.
Perhaps, this is even a government official.

The allocation was made based solely on the voting population of the various geopolitical components of Nigeria. Stop making an issue out of what is not! The world needs less politicians.

No check very well from the last column on that table.

Exactly what inec did, that is lagos and kano has the highest PU due to there population

So this means that population of the north is growing at 3 times the rate of the population of the south.

The SE has the least numbers of registered voters in Nigeria, so it's not bad if the SE has 8000 additional PUs while the whole North has 21000. But then, I think the topic is misleading.
Re: PDP Rejects 8,000 Polling Booths Allocated To South-east by titoetal(m): 1:33pm On Aug 25, 2014
On the continuous voters registration, a polling centre in Anambra had over 400 names written in exercise book as at day two waiting for INEC officials to be registered. As at today the last day of the exercise, no registration took place at that zone. You expect these people to go to other zones outside their residential to obtain voters card then on election day with restricted movement, what becomes of them?
These are some of the people who obtained their temporary voters card at that zone and now their permanent card wasn't printed. People are being disenfranchised already by this registration.
