"What Does The Bible Say About The Virgin Mary?" by OLAADEGBU(m): 3:44pm On Sep 03, 2014
Question: "What does the Bible say about the virgin Mary?"

Answer: Mary the mother of Jesus was described by God as "highly favoured" (Luke 1:28). The phrase "highly favoured" comes from a single Greek word, which essentially means "much grace." Mary received God’s grace.

Grace is "unmerited favour," meaning something we receive despite the fact that we do not deserve it. Mary needed grace from God just as the rest of us do. Mary herself understood this fact, as she declared in Luke 1:47, “. . . and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour. . .”

Mary recognized that she needed the Saviour. The Bible never says that Mary was anyone but an ordinary human whom God chose to use in an extraordinary way. Yes, Mary was a righteous woman and favoured (graced) by God (Luke 1:27-28). At the same time, Mary was a sinful human being who needed Jesus Christ as her Saviour, just like everyone else (Ecclesiastes 7:20; Romans 3:23; 6:23; 1 John 1:8.)

Mary did not have an "immaculate conception." The Bible doesn’t suggest Mary’s birth was anything but a normal human birth. Mary was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus (Luke 1:34-38), but the idea of the perpetual virginity of Mary is unbiblical. Matthew 1:25, speaking of Joseph, declares, "But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave Him the name Jesus."

The word "until" clearly indicates that Joseph and Mary did have sexual union after Jesus was born. Joseph and Mary had several children together after Jesus was born. Jesus had four half-brothers: James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas (Matthew 13:55). Jesus also had half-sisters, although they are not named or numbered (Matthew 13:55-56). God blessed and graced Mary by giving her several children, which in that culture was the clearest indication of God’s blessing on a woman.

One time when Jesus was speaking, a woman in the crowd proclaimed, "Blessed is the womb that bore You and the breasts at which You nursed" (Luke 11:27). There was never a better opportunity for Jesus to declare that Mary was indeed worthy of praise and adoration. What was Jesus’ response? "On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it" (Luke 11:28). To Jesus, obedience to God’s Word was more important than being the woman who gave birth to the Saviour.

Nowhere in Scripture does Jesus, or anyone else, direct any praise, glory, or adoration towards Mary. Elizabeth, Mary’s relative, praised Mary in Luke 1:42-44, but her praise is based on the blessing of giving birth to the Messiah. It was not based on any inherent glory in Mary.

Mary was present at the cross when Jesus died (John 19:25). Mary was also with the apostles on the day of Pentecost (Acts 1:14). However, Mary is never mentioned again after Acts chapter 1. The apostles did not give Mary a prominent role. Mary’s death is not recorded in the Bible. Nothing is said about Mary ascending to heaven or having an exalted role there. As the earthly mother of Jesus, Mary should be respected, but she is not worthy of our worship or adoration.

The Bible nowhere indicates that Mary can hear our prayers or that she can mediate for us with God. Jesus is our only advocate and mediator in heaven (1 Timothy 2:5). If offered worship, adoration, or prayers, Mary would say the same as the angels: "Worship God!" (see Revelation 19:10; 22:9.) Mary herself sets the example for us, directing her worship, adoration, and praise to God alone: "My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for He has been mindful of the humble state of His servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me — holy is His name" (Luke 1:46-49).

we only honour mary
we do not worship her.
Truly no one goes to the father except through christ, but
some are also in a better position to pray for us that's where we talk about mediator. let's take a look at what happened in canaan.

What does the Bible say?

"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Timothy 2:5).

I know you have a problem understanding English language.

catholic says Mary intercede for them and u are missing it up with mediator. yes Christ is the only mediator between God and man. but Mary intercede,i.e plead on our behalf.

dictionary meaning of mediator and intercede

To intercede is to go or come between two
parties, to plead before one of them on behalf
of the other. "Mediation"
means a standing in the midst between two
(contending) parties, for the purpose of
bringing them together.

Do not be nescient. If you had read and understood the OP you would have realised the point given in the excerpt below:

u have made no point, the Op talks about mediate which I have shown u the meaning.

this where Mary interceded in the bible,
john 2:1-8 and this is also known as the first miracle of Christ.

On the third day a wedding took
place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’
mother was there, and Jesus and
his disciples had also been invited
to the wedding. When the wine
was gone, Jesus’ mother said to
him, “They have no more wine.”
“Woman, why do you involve
me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has
not yet come.”
His mother said to the servants,
“Do whatever he tells you.”
Nearby stood six stone water jars,
the kind used by the Jews for
ceremonial washing, each holding
from twenty to thirty gallons.
Jesus said to the servants, “Fill
the jars with water”; so they filled
them to the brim.
Then he told them, “Now draw
some out and take it to the master
of the banquet.”

I repeat Mary do not mediate she intercede pls don't miss the words. that part of Luke u quoted she also said " Henceforth, all generations shall call me blessed.

Even though Jesus did what Mary said but this was not after He had somewhat rebuked her by saying that His mission was not to do temporary ephemeral things but to save His people from their sins. Apart from this place, Mary is never shown in Scripture to demand or request anything from Jesus again.

this is too lame, my bro u still have not made any clear point.

well u have made up ur mind not to honour her,my bro it's ur headache o, but for me I will honour her and be glad like Elizabeth that said in
Luke 1:39-45 New International
Version (NIV)
Mary Visits Elizabeth
At that time Mary got ready and
hurried to a town in the hill country
of Judea, where she entered
Zechariah’s home and greeted
Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard
Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in
her womb, and Elizabeth was filled
with the Holy Spirit. In a loud
voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are
you among women, and blessed is
the child you will bear! But why
am I so favored, that the mother of
my Lord should come to me? As
soon as the sound of your greeting
reached my ears, the baby in my
womb leaped for joy. Blessed is
she who has believed that the Lord
would fulfill his promises to her!”

Note this

Elizabeth was filled
with the Holy Spirit. In a loud
voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are
you among women, and blessed is
the child you will bear! But why
am I so favored, that the mother of
my Lord should come to me?

and I say why am I so favored to love and cherish the mother of my lord. oh thank you JESUS.

funny one though. we honour her by loving and accepting her as the mother of our lord Jesus Christ and not as a mere vessel like many protestant will say.

Why do
Catholics Honor
& Love Mary ?

A1. She brought the Savior into the
World.
Mary said Yes! In Luke 1:26-35 The Angel
Gabriel appeared to the young Mary and
said that she would conceive a child and
he will be called “The Son of the Most
High.” Now Mary has free will, like all of
us, she could have said no. She could
have said find someone else, but what did
she say? In Luke 1:38 Mary answered
“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord;
let it be to me according to your word.”
By her consent, by her free will Mary
united her will to the will of the Father
and brought the salvation of the human
race into the world in the person of Jesus
Christ. Think about it, without Jesus
Christ there would be no salvation for
mankind. Mary carried the God-Man, the
creator of time and space himself in her
womb. She agreed to provide him with
flesh and blood, carried him for 9 months
and nurtured him throughout his life.

A2. “Hail, full of Grace, the Lord is
with you!”

When the Angel Gabriel came to Mary
she was greeted with a royal greeting.
Luke 1:28 recounts Gabriel greeting Mary
by proclaiming “Hail, full of Grace, the
Lord is with you!” The Greek word for
Hail that is used here is a word that is
used to address royalty. Think of it, an
Angel, a being far superior to a human,
greeting a young girl with such respect
and awe; in other cases when an angel
approaches a human this is not the case.
This would imply that Mary is no normal
human being; God created her and
prepared her to carry his son, to be a
living tabernacle of the Lord.
“Full of Grace”, this is said by Gabriel to
Mary in Luke 1:38 before she even said
yes to be the Mother of God. This would
imply that she was full of Grace (God’s
own life and love) even before she had
Jesus in her womb. Like the pure and
untouchable Ark of the Covenant in the
Old Testament that held symbols of God,
Mary was made pure and full of grace in
order to hold the Word of God made
flesh, Jesus Christ
Mary was even given the grace she
needed for the encounter with the Angel
Gabriel. In Revelation 19 and 22 when an
Angel appears to John, he is confused and
mistakes him for God and begins to
worship him. When Gabriel appears to
Mary in Luke 1 something very different
happens. Mary has the grace to recognize
that this Angel isn’t God and Gabriel
acknowledges that Mary isn’t just some
ordinary girl but a girl that has been
prepared by God from her conception to
be the Mother of the God-Man, Jesus
Christ.

A3. “Blessed among women”

After the Angel Gabriel left Mary she
went to see her cousin Elizabeth who in
her old age was pregnant with John the
Baptist. In Luke 1:41 after Mary greeted
Elizabeth, Elizabeth was filled with the
Holy Spirit and John the Baptist leaped in
her womb in joy at the sound of Mary’s
voice. The Holy Spirit talking through
Elizabeth said to Mary “Blessed are you
among women, and blessed is the fruit of
your womb!” Wow, the third person of
the blessed Trinity inspired Elizabeth to
deem Mary blessed amongst all women;
Mary isn’t just some ordinary woman.
These words of the Holy Spirit talking
through Elizabeth make up the middle of
the Hail Mary “blessed are you amongst
women and blessed is the fruit of they
womb, Jesus”

A4. She is the Mother of the Lord

Jesus wasn’t created, as the Nicene Creed
proclaims “He was begotten, not made,
one in being with the Father, through
him all things were made.” So how is
Mary, a creation of God, the mother of
God? This answer is intertwined with the
mystery of the Trinity and the
Incarnation. The Father, Son and Holy
Spirit are of the same substance but are
unique. The 2nd person of the trinity,
Jesus Christ, entered time and space and
took on Mary’s flesh in the incarnation;
when this happened Mary became the
mother of Jesus. Since Mary is the mother
of Jesus that makes her the mother of
God. Mary is not the mother of the
trinity, she did not exist before the
trinity; she is the mother of the 2nd
person of the trinity in the flesh, Jesus
Christ.
Many protestant Christians today say that
Mary was not the mother of God but just
the mother of Jesus. If Mary is not the
mother of God but just the mother of
Jesus then this assumes that Jesus is not
God. This ideology reapeats a 1600 year
old heresy that was disputed and resolved
at the Council of Ephesus in 431AD. The
heretic Nestorius claimed that Jesus Christ
wasn’t divine and that Mary should be
called the Christotokos (Christ bearer)
instead of the Theotokos (God-bearer)
since Jesus isn’t God. The Church at this
council reaffirmed that Jesus is divine
and since he is divine that makes Mary
the Mother of God so rightfully so she
was to be called the Theotokos, God-
bearer.

A5. My soul magnifies the Lord, my
spirit rejoices in God my Savior”

After Elizabeth declares that Mary is
blessed amongst women, Mary sings what
is known as the Canticle of Mary (Luke
1:46-55). In verse 46 Mary sings that her
soul magnifies the Lord. Think about
that. The beauty and purity of Mary’s
soul magnifies or intensifies the presence
of the Lord. It has been said that Jesus is
like the sun; the source of light and Mary
is like the moon, reflecting that light of
God. Mary is not just a vessel that held
Christ, Mary’s body and soul was created
particularly by God to be a living
tabernacle of the Word of God, Jesus
Christ. To say that Mary was just a mere
vessel is undermining that majesty of God
by undermining the greatness of his
creation.
Mary then says in verse 47 that her
“spirit rejoices in God my savior” Mary is
rejoicing in God because he has created
her and destined her to the Mother of his
Son. God has granted Mary particular
graces that no other human has….the
graces needed to be the Mother of God.
The Catholic’s honor and love for Mary
reflects the deep love of God who made
her who she is.

A6. The Blessed Mother

In Luke 1:48 Mary proclaims that “All
generations will call me blessed..” God
created Mary as such a pure, graced filled
creation that from then on until all
eternity she will be called blessed. This is
where Catholics get the title of “The
Blessed Mother”; it’s straight out of the
Bible.

A7. She is the Mother of Humanity

Mary was chosen to be the mother of
Jesus but she is also our Mother. In John
19:26-27 when Jesus is on the Cross he
looks at his mother and says “Woman,
behold your son!” and then he looks at
John and says “Behold, your mother!”
Since early in the history of the Church
this has been interpreted as Jesus
extending Mary’s motherhood to all of
humanity. This can be better understood
in relation to the Father and the Son.
God the Father has one son, Jesus Christ,
but by extension of our baptism Jesus’
son ship is extended to all Christians so
we truly become sons and daughters of
God. In a similar yet different situation
by Jesus’ words on the cross Mary’s
Motherhood is extended to all of us.
Although Mary is human and the Father
is divine we have a mother in heaven
who loves and prays for us.

A8. She suffered with Christ

Mary suffered with Jesus as only a
mother could when seeing her child being
mocked, humiliated, beaten and put to
death in the most demeaning form of the
day. Mary’s suffering was foreshadowed
by Simeon when he said to her after she
presented the baby Jesus in the temple
“Behold, this child is destined for the fall
and rise of many in Israel, and to be a
sign that will be contradicted (and you
yourself a sword will pierce) so that the
thoughts of many hearts may be
revealed.” (Luke 1:34-35).
Mary is considered a co-redeemer with
Christ due to the most personal role she
played in salvation history by saying yes
to taking on the role of the Mother of
God and accepting all the joy and
suffering which came with that. In fact
every baptized Christian is called to offer
up their suffering with that of Christ for
the salvation of souls. Paul supports this
in Colossians 1:24 where he writes “Now
I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake,
and in my flesh I am filling up what is
lacking in the afflictions of Christ on
behalf of his body, which is the church.”
Since we are members of the Body of
Christ we share in the life and mission of
Christ. Mary has a particularly important
share in this due to her unique and
intimate role as the Mother of God.

The OT, which coincides with the Jewish Torah, says absolutely nothing about any virgin giving birth to their messiah. Show me a verse in Jewish scriptures, or the old testament, where Yahweh promised to send himself as messiah. Or where the messiah would be born of a virgin.

it is so shameful of u still saying Catholics worship her after u have been told several time that Catholics don't worship her, sorry o is ur IQ dis low.

The birth of Mary is narrated in the Quran

Muslim tradition records a hadith , which

So you have now run out of bible references that you now resort to quoting from the qu'ran and the hadith. I also realised that the Qu'ran gives honour to Mary by naming a chapter after her. I don't think any other female was accorded that honour in the Qu'ran and I'm not sure you will find the word Mercy therein. undecided

and my spirit rejoices in God my
Savior..Luke 1:47.
If She's sinless why would she need a Savior?

jesus was sinless because his conception wasn't through sexual intercourse. d bible said all have sinned including mary hence need a saviour.

1. Remember when God asked that a copper snake be made and who ever looks to it shall be healed.. Isn't that "idolatary" 2. Idolatry is a thing of the heart its not just physical, the picture you have of your dad is an image, the bible said make no image of anything on earth or in heaven. 3. You bow to you kings and elders!! In your heart, are you respecting, honoring, referencing or worshiping. 4. When someone performs an act and you are confused, they tell you what they meant by their act and you say NO, I thought twas only God that knows the heart. 5. If you can sit and reading the story of mary about to get married then get pregnant claiming twas the holyspirit. Who wasn't so popular then, imagine the same and pain yet she never asked God to take the child away, 9 months old pregnancy was used to travel on a donkey for a census where she had to give birth in a stable, you might understand the need for the reverence. 6.the claim for brothers, you might site a part where someone said is that not jesus, the carpenters son, brother of james... IBO claim to be a migrated tribe of the Israelis, in ibo language there is no word for cousin or nephew, every one is called nwanne- brother/sister.. History tells us that joseph was far older than mary and had a wife before her, yes the bible is a story bok of man relationship with God given to the protestants by the catholic church.. This book has been translated severally before getting to english, meaning may have the lost. Do is know what changing is to was can do to a sentence? Christianity is of the heart, if you can love God and your neighbor as christ has loved you would do harm to no one and that's good enough... Stop trying to fault other denomination when yours also have loop holes,
