Olutola88: lol! You know very little young man. I spent 5 years in the University of Ilorin. Don't tell me you are looking for a perfect environment. Mind you, you can't even get a perfect atmosphere in the best universities of the world. If everything is perfect, what then would be improved? As for the power supply, it was the best when I was in school. Transportation is a problem popular with public universities and it has been seriously alleviated in Unilorin over the years. I'm sure you've not been to other schools that's why you don't know that Unilorin iswhen I see a non unilorin graduate hyping d way d graduates are hyping, I will believe you, till then: unitribalism! |

Op. Well done for the expose. I finished from there and can relate to all what you say. I was speaking to a student of unical and you can imagine she doesn't even know what courses she's failed since 100 level until she was in final year and was about graduating. That was when her name was pasted as having issues with a course and this same issues replicate themselves in MOST schools across Nigeria. You see lecturers not releasing results for years and the student not knowing what exactly is wrong. I know this can never happen in Unilorin as all your results must be ready and with your level adviser before the end of the session. Any lecturer who fails to mark scripts knows they are in for trouble . Some schools even still use the manual course form where you have to queue for days to just sign a single course with a lecturer. Imagine the time spent to sign with all lecturers if you have 5 or more courses. All through my stay. I for once never witnessed a fight inside school nor did i ever hear a gunshot. I walk and even read on the walk way at 2am, 3am, 4am without a single harassment from anyone. That's how peaceful it was. 7pm and some places are no go areas in some schools. You can aspire to any student union position as long as you don't have a skeleton in your cupboard and no single person would harass you for either campaigning or contesting. You can't enter a public toilet in another university. Just passing by and the stench emanating from them is enough to persuade you to move away quickly. I entered a school's library some few years back and was appalled at what i saw. Even though some of the books were old and mostly outdated it didn't have to come to that. The roof were leaky and water was streaming into the library. Most of the books got wet in the process and the environment was not even conducive for reading. Abandoned building projects of almost 10 years can be seen around and heaps of garbage were found in many corners. Roads leading to students areas were terrible and most infrastructure dilapidated. Most of those students hating and typing ill things about the uni. Ask them how many months or even years did they spend at home before been mobilised for service. Some have spent nothing less than a year and a half at home and all these were not of their own wrong doing. Finish today and the next batch you are on your way to camp no matter what in Unilorin except you choose to defer it. Ask many students of other higher institutions if they never greased the palm of a lecturer in a particular course before they graduated. Either the money for some useless things or for no reason than just settling him and ask them what happened after they didn't not follow the instructions to pay money. Whether they were penalized or not. I can say it anywhere i never dropped a single naira for any lecturer and they never even force us to do so neither did they EVER sell to us any handout. This is what an ideal school environment should be. A school should have your back. We can all huff puff and blame those at the top but look at your environment and start asking questions. What has your VC done with your school's allocation? At Unilorin I know they aren't there yet, but daily we are striving to be better. We should all celebrate excellence and call for more. We shouldn't just accept mediocrity as the norm. Students of other schools should start asking questions and not fighting what is right. 11 Likes 1 Share |

Thanks op for bringing this issue up. Though, am still a student of UNILORIN and I share the sentiments the op opened up here. Personally, I believe that Nigerian schools haven't done much really in terms of everything ranging from learning, environment, innovation etc. But some people now attack UNILORIN unnecessarily, especially when they are also suffering from what they accuse the school of not having. Some will even go to the extent of assuming that UNILORIN students aren't intelligent which unfortunately is false. If there's anything that you can't fault UNILORIN in, it's the drilling you undergo, that's why some students call it better by stress. But those schools that hate on UNILORIN should desist from it, because this is a school that has risen above the bars and now compete favorably with its elders per se in Nigeria educational system. Take a look at the fact that UNILORIN was established in 1975, and it still stands out among its contemporaries which they were founded in the same year. I don't think there's any Nigerian school established in that year, that can withstand UNILORIN now. The U.I, O.A.U, UNILAG, U.N.N, A.B.U of Nigeria came before us with at least 13 years but we still challenge them in terms of everything. Many innovations which most schools in Nigeria use today started off in UNILORIN. Talk of CBT,E- registration, E-payment, and many more. Though I accept that we face what all Nigerian schools go through and there's a need for more improvement. What other Nigerian schools lack which have favored us thus far is the school administration, they have really worked and are still doing their best assiduously to actualize the envisaged Better By Far University. 3 Likes |

mahyowah: well i don't hate unilorin it a wonderful institution but what i despise is their method of admission. the tribalism, nepotism and favoritism involved is really absurd and i'm sure that what other people too do not like.Believe me, all those factors you listed are just figment of people's imagination, maybe because Unilorin is in a muslim state. I'm from Delta state, a christian. When I was admitted, I didn't know anybody (from the VC down to the security men). Infact, the very first day I entered the University school gate was when I resumed as a fresher. 2 Likes |

How on earth do you expect UNILORIN to be perfectly perfect  Atleast d skul has been a pace setter for some of d innovations we now see in our public universities...Intellectually,we have our own share of students. Most of d schools that are being compared to it have been in existence bfr UNILORIN was established so little wonder why some got more infrastructures than we do... Very soon, UNILORIN will b earning money for the nation from its TEAK and MORINGA plantations... Nevertheless, UNILORIN still got its flaws esp students accommodation, but for time being we are d BEST. UNILORIN...d great citadel of learning #teamBBF# |

NeuroBoss: I'm a 2011 graduate of the Better by Far university. The vexation of the Unilorin haters is understandable. I used to hate Lionel Messi when C. Ronaldo was in Man Utd just because the former plays for a rival team when it is all glaring Messi is the naturally most gifted. Without mincing facts, since 2002, Unilorin held the ace of leadership in Nigerian universities due to the firm legacies and structures of its last two Vice-chancellors. THEIR GROUSE AGAINST US: That Unilorin has been in operation 24-7-365 is a banal truth. That Unilorin is the only Nigerian university where students don't get harrassed by lecturers is also known That Unilorin pioneered the CBT system of examination and a model to others in ICT is also incontestable. This was done initially to curtail incidences of missing results which is inevitable where more than 500 students offer a course before other things were factored in. Unilorin has the best e-registration platform. That Unilorin students don't do Aluta so are presumed subjugated. Pray, where do sane people raise placards against a progressive, student-friendly yet assertive leadership. That Unilorin happens to be in a Muslim enclave? Hell, I'm a Christian and Ilorin is not Pakistan. Nigerians of every tribe, creed and religion are in the school as students and staff to show its federal structure. WHO HATES UNILORIN? These people are in different categories. The first in these categories and infact the most bitter are the unfortunate former students who got expelled due to misconducts (yes, unilorin takes no poo), withdrawn due to overly low academic performance. We call them "Face Tanke". People in the second categories were unsuccessful jambites and remedial students who tried many times to be initiated into "Better by Far" but were not that lucky and have since allowed bitterness to turn to perennial hatred and jealousy concocting various lies such as tribalism, religion and state of origin as reasons for their woes. The third are just the pathetic students and graduates of other schools who can't just stand us reel out the uniqueness of our Alma mater in glowing terms. They say, "we too dey make mouth". Why we no go make mouth? When we start something, they copy it. In 2008, unilorin started a well-ordered student ID programme that made us to wear our ID cards like co-operate people do. The IDs were so structured that from the colour of the rope, you easily tell which faculty a particular student belongs to. And within a faculty, you can tell which department another is with the colour of the plastic casing. What did the copy-cats see this for? They went agog with starting theirs which is yet still not as sleek as Unilorin's. As part of our convocation package, the school gives us a beautiful T-shirts with all the names of the graduands on it. Every unilorin graduate wear it on camp as if on cue thereby fostering our bonds, organisation and friendship in camp to their chagrin. Now, they have copied it. I can go on and on but time and space will fail me. If you have not had the Unilorin experience, your hate is understandable. Unilorin is being run as Nigeria ideally is suppossed to be ran- innovative leadership, corrupt-free and a long term development plan. My SUG presido in 2007 taught us a song which seems to spite the hatred. It goes thus: "Lèyin Ilórin kòsí varsity o alágídí l'omo O.A.U, lèyin kòsí varsity o, area boys l'omo Unilag" The haters have since multiplied from all the regions of the country. |
