More than 100 Boko Haram Takfiri militants
have been killed by Cameroonian army during
their attack on the African country.
"The Cameroonian response (to the attack)
resulted in over 100 deaths among the
aggressors," a Cameroonian government
spokesman, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, said in a
statement released on Monday.
According to the statement, the fighting took
place in the northern border town of Fotokol on
Saturday.
"There were no casualties reported on the
Cameroonian side after the attack," the
statement said, adding, "Our defense forces
responded vigorously with mortar fire aimed at
the positions held by units of the Boko Haram
terrorist group that was behind the attack."
The militants reportedly retreated to the Nigerian
border town of Gamboru Ngala, which is under
their control for over a week.
Boko Haram has conducted a number of assaults
and kidnappings in Cameroon, including the
abduction of deputy prime minister's wife in late
July. Following the abduction, the Cameroonian
army launched a successful operation and
rescued the abducted wife of Amadou Ali.
Nearly 650,000 Nigerians have fled their homes
due to Boko Haram attacks and are displaced
inside the country, while thousands more have
taken refuge in neighboring countries, the United
Nations High Commissioner for Refugees says.
Boko Haram -- whose name means “Western
education is forbidden” -- says its goal is to
overthrow the Nigerian government.
It has claimed responsibility for a number of
deadly gun and bomb attacks in various parts of
Nigeria since the beginning of its militancy in
2009. Over 10,000 people have so far been killed
in the assaults.
