After Rosario, Argentina,
resident Héctor Varela named
his son Messi — in honor of
hometown hero Lionel Messi —
government officials banned
parents from naming children after the soccer superstar.
According to Mundo Deportivo, officials expected a flood of
babies named Messi could
“lead to confusion,” and they’d
apparently rather deal with
school rooms full of di Marias
and Cambiassos. The timing seems a little off
here. Lionel Messi is a four-
time World Player of the year,
and he’s been a superstar for
Barcelona for going on nine
years. Now we’re all of a sudden worried about too
many Messis?

C'mon!
These people should put on their thinking caps. He's not GOD or JESUS!

Or are they trying to avoid the situation whereby these kids become professional footballers someday and the commentator would be like "Wonderful skills from Messi, and he passes to another Messi, wow! That was sublime from the other Messi."

Just like everyone started naming their children Jonathan or Goodluck or worse, Goodluck Jonathan together, when he won the presidential election.

Not entirely true... It's not just for Messi alone, it's a ban from a 1969 statute that forbids parents from giving their babies a surname as a first name.

Everyone wants to Identify with a Star.

When GEJ became president, the name "Goodluck" became popular in Nigeria.

Heck my Grandpa named one of my cousins "Goodluck", we all politely asked him to change it o, make the pikin no grow hate am.
