Onyekachi, the son of Chief Martin Elechi, former Governor of Ebonyi State, is dead. The immediate cause of death was not disclosed by the family. The deceased operated some business outlets in Abakaliki and was a lecturer at the Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki before his demise. Governor David Umahi in a condolence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Emmanuel Uzor, expressed great shock over Onyekachi’s death, describing it as devastating. The governor further described the death of Onyekachi, who was in his early forties as “tragic, devastating and heart-breaking” and urged his family to bear the irreparable loss with fortitude. “Death has been accepted as a necessary end, but Onyekachi’s death on Friday at the prime of his life is most painful and a great loss to his family and Ebonyi. “We pray God to console his family and grant his soul eternal rest. “It is most painful to accept this reality of life’s nothingness and further accept the glaring reality that Onyekachi is dead. “To Chief Elechi, he was a son but to us, he was a teacher, a young man who rose to the top of his career and remained dedicated to his duties. “I convey my deepest condolences to you and your entire family on behalf of the patriotic citizens of Ebonyi,” the statement read. The governor, in the statement, urged the deceased’s children to emulate the good virtues of their father and immortalise him by upholding same. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/09/martin-elechi-ex-ebonyi-governor-loses.html

Buhari submitted the forms at the All Progressives Congress, APC, National Secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday. In his remarks, Buhari said “I here in person among friends and colleagues to put my name forward to my party, the All Progressives Congress, seeking nomination to contest the Presidential Elections next year, 2019. “Fellow party members, I am taking this step with all humility, sense of responsibility and an unquestionable desire to serve and protect the interests of all Nigerians. “I am very grateful to those dozens of organizations who have joined together and contributed funds to purchase these forms. I assure them and the rest of Nigerians that, if nominated and if elected, I shall continue to serve you to the best of my ability. “Let me today appeal to party members not to be complacent but to prepare, strategize and win in 2019 elections. Amidst the ongoing trauma that the family of abducted Leah Sharibu might be suffering, a recent incident has occured which is even so hertbreaking While it is not clear if Leah Sharibu’s belongings were also stolen as she herself is in captivity and unable to verify, however US Nigeria Law group alleged that her Mother had just returned from dropping her only son (pictured) at school for resumption only to discover the break in by thieves and theft of the families property including their generator set and food stuff. The press statement from US Nigeria Law group reads; The family of hostage Christian Schoolgirl Leah Sharibu faced another calamity yesterday as her home in Dapchi was broken into and the family’s belongings looted by thieves. Leah’s Mother had just returned from dropping her only son at school for resumption only to discover the break in and theft of the families property including their generator set and food stuff. It is not immediately clear if Leah’s belongings were also stolen as she herself is in captivity and unable to verify. It will be recalled that in April, the family also suffered bereavement with the loss of Leah’s grandmother’s brother which she remains unaware of being in captivity. In an unrelated development, the family has disclosed that almost 7 months after her abduction, no government official from local, state or federal tiers has reached out to them over their missing daughter. This was stated in a Voice of America interview after the release of the proof of life audio. Ironically in the audio recording, Leah specifically pleaded with the general public to assist her family. The theft of their belongings is exactly the opposite of what she desired. – We enjoin people of goodwill to support the family at this time – We urge the government of Nigeria to brief the family on the status of their daughter’s release – We ask the Christian Association of Nigeria to organize a national love offering for the Sharibus for October 1 Independence Services – We commend British MP Tom Brake for jumpstarting the 200 hours vigil to mark 200 days of Leah’s captivity – We reaffirm our commitment to support the family per Leah’s expressed wishes and are currently undertaking a needs assessment – We call on the Victim Support Fund to assist the Sharibu family http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/09/thieves-storm-leah-sharibus-home-steal.html

A former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, on Thursday demanded the release of the abducted Christian girl, Leah Sharibu. Leading a protest at Nigeria’s High Commission in London, Omokri encouraged the Federal Government to negotiate the release of Sharibu. Leah was one of the schoolgirls Boko Haram had few months ago kidnapped in Dapchi, Yobe State. Following the public outcry that followed the abduction of the students, Boko Haram had released the girls but refused to set Sharibu free over her refusal to renounce Christianity. However, Omokri, while speaking in London urged President Muhammadu Buhari not to use the kidnap of the Christian girl to score cheap political points. Omokri said, “President Muhammadu Buhari, you should do everything within your power. “Don’t try to use that to score political points and then keep her and then maybe release her when it’s time for the elections. Let her go now.” Omokri berated Boko Haram for the continued detention of Leah, adding that the act is, “anti-Islam and anti-Quran”. “What you are doing is wrong; it is anti-Islam, anti-Quran. Release Leah Sharibu,” he said. Source: http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/09/get-leah-sharibu-released-now-dont-wait.html

The Borno State Police Command has said the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP), a faction of ISIS, has its spies operating from Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in the state. Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Bello stated this while giving an update on the security situation at a Humanitarian and Development Coordination Forum in Maiduguri. Bello, who represented the Commissioner of Police, Demien Chukwu, said it was established that three among the 22 Boko Haram insurgents arrested two months ago were members of ISIS. According to him, the terrorists usually stationed their stooge at the IDPs camps to perpetrate chaos without being noticed. He said: “We have launched radio programmes to sensitise the larger society on the need to be sensitive of their environment. “Some of the affected victims in camps were not IDPs; we have our ways of rating them to the classes of A.B.C. So if you find any suspicious person, do not just send him away, but arrest him because the terrorists have their sympathisers; they are the people that are giving them information.” Northeast Zonal Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) Bashir Garga hailed the police and other security agencies for protecting IDPs and creating a safe working environment for humanitarian aid workers in the Northeast. Real Madrid goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois has outlined some of the differences between the Los Blancos and his former club, Chelsea. The 26-year-old completed a move from Chelsea to the Santiago Bernabeu club shortly before the transfer window closed for Premier League clubs in August. Speaking on Chelsea and Real Madrid, Courtois told Belgian outlet, Het Belang van Limburg, “The difference is twice as big and of course, the feeling is very different. “When you look forward, you see this wall of people, whereas at Chelsea, sometimes you could still see the sky or the hotel behind the stands. “Of course, it isn’t the first time I’ve played here. I know the language, know the coach and the stadium. The first couple of minutes was testing the waters, but after that, it felt good from the start. “I had a good connection with everyone from the start, at practice, the level is high…the level is higher compared to Chelsea.” Courtois made his first debut for Madrid in their 4-1 victory against Leganes last weekend in the La Liga. The governor of Ebonyi state, Engr. David Umahi has stated that many looted funds in Nigeria were trapped in foreign banks, some buried at various cemeteries, and others buried underground. Umahi made the disclosure while declaring open anti-corruption, ethics and integrity training for Ebonyi State local government officials, held in the capital Abakaliki on Monday. The governor, who promised to establish an ICPC office in the state, advocated for amnesty for alleged looters saying such approach would help in arresting corruption and commit offenders in returning over 70 percent of looted public funds. “We have so much of the looted funds trapped in foreign banks, some buried at the cemetery while many were buried underground where they were destroyed by termites. “But if there is a a negotiation like committing the looters into subtly surrendering at least 70 percent of the looted funds and keeping the rest or investing all the funds in the country; by so doing, we would have recovered the money and made use of it,” he said. Earlier in her address, representative of the Acting Chairman of ICPC, Mrs Rose Okoduwa, said the training was to bring the anti-corruption crusade closer to the grassroots using local government officials as vehicles of social re-engineering. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has again clarified that the those aspiring for the party’s presidential ticket will go through direct primary. APC National Secretary, Mai Mala Buni, stated this in an interview with the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) at the weekend. Buni said, “Both direct and indirect primaries are contained in our party constitution. In the presidential primary, we are going to start the direct method at the various ward levels, then we’ll conclude everything at the national convention. “Other primaries such as that of the National Assembly, governors and members of the state Houses of Assembly depend on what the states want. “The party executive at the state level would sit down and decide and then forward to us the method they want for approval.” DAILY POST reports that there is confusion in the party nationwide as to how candidates will emerge. This is despite explanation of the decisions made by the National Executive Committee (NEC) as regards the mode of primaries. APC had said: “Primary Elections into all elective offices shall be by the Direct and Indirect Election or by Consensus. The use of the Direct and Indirect Primaries shall however depend on the peculiarity and need of a given State “The adopted mode shall now be applied to all categories of the Party’s Primary Elections i.e. State Assembly, Senate, House of Representatives and for the Governorship Elections”. But many chieftains, elected officials and members, have cried foul, insisting that subjecting some states and positions to indirect primaries was to enable certain persons determine winners. On Sunday, a statement by Yekini Nabena, APC National Publicity Secretary, confirmed that the NEC decisions had triggered an internal crisis. He disclosed that the party had received information that some members were working against the NEC resolutions. Nabena noted: “The identities of those plotting such meetings have been identified and unless they desist from such they will be dealt with in line with the Party’s Constitution at the appropriate time. “The NWC will resist any attempt to disrupt the current peace and harmony prevailing in our great Party after the exit of some members of our Party. “We urge any member who is not satisfied with the decisions of the Party to utillize channels provided by the Party’s constitution to air their views.” Source: http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/09/apc-reaffirms-how-presidential.html

Actress-cum-producer, Oyin Laz, has said her latest work on an advocacy-based movie was aimed at addressing the causes of bipolar disorder. The US-based actress, who has returned to her country home, told R at the premiere of the last Tuesday, at Ozone Cinemas, Yaba, Lagos, that she was poised to draw the attention of the society to bipolar, which is usually being overlooked. The movie entitled: Bipolar (Amodi) featured actors like Jide Kosoko, Lanre Hassan, Yemi Solade, Abdulelateef Adedimeji, Jaiye Kuti, Bimbo Oshin, among others. It was directed by Muyiwa Ademola. The movie, shot in the US and Nigeria, reflects the story of a lady based abroad, but who soon finds herself back in Nigeria due to temper issues with her boyfriend. However, along the line, she met a doctor, who was able to walk the journey with her by helping her manage her anger. Co-incidentally, she had a twin somewhere in the village that also has similar issue. How a 25-yr-old mother of two was hacked to death in Ekiti According to the producer, the suspense-filled movie with a little bit of comedy, has hit the cinemas from August 31 and is distributed by Blue Pictures. “A lot of people have been asking if I have a bipolar disorder, which must have prompted me to put in a movie. No, I have a lot of people around me suffering from Bipolar, which was exactly what inspired me. “When I first gave the story to my director, he was skeptical whether it would be accepted in Nigeria or not, but I am not worried about the acceptability than to pass the message across. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed, before it gets out of hand. This is why I took the risk. Instead of producing a comedy or any movie, I feel fulfilled to join forces with other health organisations and medical experts to proffer solution to this problem among people,” she said. Oyin Laz, however, expressed her delight for joining the trend of putting her work in the cinema, while she charged her colleagues in Yoruba movie industry to follow suit. Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar on Friday broke down in tears when receiving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) nomination form from his supporters. The supporters purchased the nomination form and presented it to him at the campaign office in Abuja, asking him to contest for the 2019 Presidential election. According to them, the purchase of the form is an expression of their commitment to support his Presidential election bid. Atiku while responding broke down in tears and had to reach for his white handkerchief to wipe the tears from his face. He said he was surprised at the show of love from the group for coming together to purchase the form without his knowledge. “You could have seen that one of the ladies who spoke virtually succeeded in getting me to weep. This is because she aptly described the challenges every Nigerian is facing in this country today and she believed honestly and sincerely from the bottom of her heart that I could be an instrument of addressing those challenges. “And believe me, addressing those challenges is possible because we have brought young men and women, Nigerians who have got the talents, who have got the education, who have got the experience, who have got all and what it takes to honestly turn this country around. “Putting together such talented young Nigerians requires leadership and it is that leadership we have not been fortunate enough to have on a consistent basis, that has prevented this country from taking her rightful position in Africa and indeed, the world,” he said. President Muhammadu Buhari during a joint press conference he had with the visiting German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Friday warned Nigerians who continue to migrate from the country through illegal routes, despite the inherent dangers, that they are on their own. He said such people make the uncertain trips at their own risk. The President said, “Firstly, I am against those my countrymen and women that illegally travel to Europe. “I believe you know the ECOWAS protocol encourages free movement of persons, goods and services. But for those going to Europe, we are not, as an administration, agreeing with those who continue to defy the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean because they feel there are greener pastures there, whether they are prepared for it or not. “We do not support anything illegal and indiscipline. You must recall that about six weeks ago, we repatriated about 3,000 Nigerians that were stuck in Libya on their way to Europe. “You must have read in the newspapers and watch on the television the number of Nigerians lost in the Mediterranean. “We have made it very clear that we do not support anything illegal and anybody who feels this country does not offer him what he should be offered as a citizen, and decides to defy the desert and the Mediterranean, is doing it at his own risk. “But if he is stuck somewhere in Libya between his final destination and Nigeria, we will rescue him and bring him back home and send him back to his local government.” The German Chancellor, in her remarks, earlier said she and Buhari discussed the 2019 general elections and the need for the exercise to be free and fair. She expressed the belief that the elections would impact positively on the nation’s youths. Source: http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/09/president-buhari-tells-angela-merkel.html

Naira is the official currency of Nigeria. We use Naira every day to do almost everything but a lot of people don’t seem to know much about it. If you have ever wondered how this term became the system of money that became generally accepted in Nigeria and when we started using it, then this piece is written to tell you something about the currency you spend every day. On Monday, January 1, 1973, the Federal Government of Nigeria introduced a new money system. Before then, the official currency was the Nigerian Pounds which was introduced in 1907 while the minor unit of the currency was Shillings. According to the Central Bank of Nigeria, the decision to change to decimal currency followed the recommendations of the Decimal Currency Committee set up in 1962 which submitted its report in 1964. Meanwhile, prior to the introduction of the new currency in 1973, Chief Obafemi Awolowo was the Federal Commissioner for Finance between 1967 and 1971. And as the Finance Minister, Awolowo took it upon himself to come up with a new name for the new currency as the then Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon had reportedly announced in March 1971, that Nigeria would change to decimal currency on January 1, 1973. When asked how Awolowo arrived at the term NAIRA, his daughter, Tokunbo Awolowo in an interview with the Punch said her father collapsed the name of the country and arrive at the term Naira. ”He just took the name of Nigeria and collapsed it to Naira. That’s what he told us and that was how he arrived at the name ‘Naira’ and that was when he was the Federal Commissioner for Finance” she said. However, as of 1973, one Naira was the major currency unit in the country. Four years after the introduction of Naira, a new banknote denomination of the value of 20 Naira was issued on Friday, February 11, 1977, and as a result, N20 became the first Nigerian currency bearing the portrait of a Nigerian citizen, General Murtala Ramat Muhammad. Interestingly, 26 years after Naira became the official currency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, another denomination of the value of N100 was introduced with the portrait of Chief Obafemi Awolowo precisely in December 1999. And in a bid to facilitate an efficient payment system, the Central Bank of Nigeria introduced N200, N500 and N1000 notes in November 2000, April 2001 and October 2005 respectively. Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning overhead bicycle kick for Real Madrid against current club Juventus has been voted UEFA’s goal of the season. The former Real Madrid striker beat competition from 11 nominees for the award in honour of his goal in last season’s Champions League quarter-final first leg in Turin. “Thanks to everyone who voted for me. Will never forget that moment, specially the reaction of the fans in the stadium,” the 33-year-old Portuguese superstar said on Twitter, using the hashtag #SpecialMoment. Real Madrid were already leading against the Italian champions thanks to Ronaldo’s opener after just two minutes when he acrobatically blasted in Dani Carvajal’s cross on 64 minutes. Ronaldo said it was “the best goal” of his career and it helped Real to a 3-0 win on the night and moved them a step closer to an eventual quarter-final victory over Juve. The Spanish club went on to win the competition for the third consecutive season. The striker said the crowd’s reaction – a standing ovation from the Juventus fans – played a part in his decision to move to Turin in a 100 million-euro deal last month. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is the all time top scorer in the Champions League with 120 goals. Meanwhile, Portugal captain Ronaldo will skip his country’s next two internationals including a Nations League game against Italy in order to focus on his new club Juventus, Italian media reported on Wednesday. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Portugal’s all-time top goalscorer and skipper wants to make his new team the priority and will remain in Turin to be in top physical shape and to get to know his new teammates better. The 33-year-old Ronaldo will reportedly miss a friendly against World Cup runners-up Croatia on September 6 and a Nations League game on September 10 against Italy. A generator repairer in the Ijebu Igbo area of Ogun State, identified as Ayodeji Adesegun, aka Solution, has been allegedly killed by a local security guard in the area over ponmo. According to Punch Metro, the 24-year-old had gone to seek payment for a debt owed him by a woman who produced ponmo (cow hide) at the Odose Badejo area. He was alleged to have parked his motorcycle by the roadside where the woman spread some of her wares. The Ogun State indigene was leaving the area when he was allegedly accosted by the guard, who accused him of riding on the ponmo. In the argument that ensued, the victim was allegedly shot in the chest. Policemen from the Ijebu Igbo division prevented a breakdown of law and order in the area as a mob attempted to lynch the suspect. A source said the incident happened around 5.30pm on Friday. He said: “The man was a generator repairer and he had a motorcycle. The woman who sells the ponmo owed him some money and he went to collect the money. He parked his motorcycle by the roadside where the woman put her wares. “He was about leaving when the security man accused him of riding his motorcycle on the ponmo. There was an argument between them and the repairer was shot in the chest. “There was confusion everywhere and people tried to mob the security man, but we stopped them. We called the police from the Ijebu Igbo division and their timely response saved the day. The policemen took the corpse away and they returned the following day to the area to make some arrests.” The deceased’s wife, Mosunmola, who was in her mother’s house, said the victim was coming to visit her when he was killed. She said: “We have a child together already and I am four months pregnant. I was sick and he said he would come to see me and give me some money to go to a hospital. He was a few houses to my place when he was shot dead by the guard. I am so confused I don’t know what to do. Please help me to get justice.” The ponmo seller had been arrested, while the suspect’s father was also apprehended after the security guard escaped. The duo were allegedly transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Eleweran. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident. He said: “The man that fired the shot is a local security guard. He just came out from nowhere and fired at the deceased, who was a member of the Odua People’s Congress. Nobody is ready to tell us what exactly led to the shooting. “The state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered that the SCIID should take over the case and ensure the arrest of the suspect.” Source: http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/08/shocking-security-guard-kills-generator.html
