I dont think ISPON have office in Kano, you can either choose kaduna(NO 2/4 Kachia Road, Ungwa Boro, kaduna) or Plateau(08034523367) branch for your training.

please any link to their Kano branch?[/quote]

In addition to what zeongeon has said, I'd recommend you go for firefighting training in line with the oil and gas industry. In Nigeria, there are OPITO recognized course providers that conduct such training. I'd also recommend you do Confined Space Entry, Confined Space Rescue, H2S Alive, Work at height rescue training, Fall protection and Authorized Gas Tester training.

All the best!!

thank you very much....i recently saw UK HSE going for 40k instalment plan inclusive Nigeria own is 45k with no instalment plan...what are the advantages of both...@ zeongeon also

Thank you very much Jusome for the question. What is the UK body giving then certification eg Nebosh, IOSH, CIEH, BSC? I will advice you go for the Nigerian one if you have the money and later on the UK HSE certicificate.

WHY = The reason is that I was at the last concluded national safety conference and AGM organized by ISPON and with the various bodies represented there from government bodies like NSCDC, NNPC, FRSC, NAF, NDA, NMC to private bodies one can say ISPON is picking pace and very very fast most private organizations and government organizations have safety professionals who are certified members of Ispon.. At least I met the safety manager for MTN he is certified by ISPON and a member, I also met one hausa lady who is a HSE representative for NNPC she has her Ispon certificate and is a member, I met the chairman Ispon abuja and he told me that most government bodies and construction companies and contractors in abuja are beginning to send there staffs to do safety trainings with ISPON Abuja. This is to say ISPON is beginning to achieve its goal of making it's certificate recognized within Nigeria and in most organization.
Gradually organizations are beginning to catch the safety virus.

Secondly in the conference we got a memorandum of understanding from Board of Certified Safety Professionals America (BCSP) becoming affiliated with ISPON and recognizing ISPON as a standard Safety Institute..with some ISPON certifications you will be exempted from writing some BCSP exams and with some BSCP certifications some ISPON exams will be skipped.

Thirdly, if you have the money pay for that ISPON and get your safety certificate at once if you really need a safety certificate or are serious about Ur safety career. Instalmental payments can keep your certificate with a training institute for months if not years...you know how it is before you know your using money for other rising issues while your certificate is pending.

However, the UK safety certificate is good your exposed to international best safety practices and standards but know the UK safety body issuing the certifcate don't go jumping on any safety certificate because its UK.. When you see safety jobs the UK certificates I see they ask for are mostly Nebosh, Iosh and cieh. If your looking at working outside Nigeria very soon and I mean in some months then do renowned UK safety certifications.

If you don't have the money to pay all at once for your Ispon then u can do your UK cert which suits your financial capability BUT if you have the money you should go for ISPON when you hit more money then you can do any of the UK renowned safety certification....

Summary, with just ISPON, good networking, connections and God almighty by your side your good to go as a safety professional in Nigeria BUT if your opportune to travel or going outside Nigeria then fortify yourself with Nebosh, OSHA, IOsH, CIEH and God almighty

Hope my advice has done justice to your question.

@Zeongeon,

Thanks for the counsel given to Jusome, however (my opinion though), I think it is important while trying to promote a certification body we do not subtly discredit others in the process. Doing so will negate the value called "fair play". Simply because some UK certification bodies are big doesnt necessary mean the medium or small bodies should be kicked aside or discouraged from. Attitudes like what you wrote up here is simply the reason why Nigeria with a population of 180million and more cannot boast of other remarkable safety bodies outside ISPON. Isn't that a shame. The UK and US we are trying to emulate have well over 50 gigantic certification bodies. Come on!

Because someone work for Apple doesnt mean Samsung, Nokia, Tecno, Infinix, Lenovo, LG should be avoided. This is the same attitude that is affecting virtually every sector in this Country and the reason we cant grow. No fair play and by this I mean, PDP feels its the only, APC thinks they are the all and all.

UK has over 3000 safety bodies just so you know...besides some of the bodies you mention above are nothing compared to some really big ones. Bodies such as RosPA, RSPHA, ISQEM, IIRSM, AoFAQ and the Almighty BSC (British Safety Council) are safety giants in UK, these are bodies that generate traffic worth over 120,000 annually with a combined generated revenue of well over 60million pounds.

In my humble opinion, i'd suggest that instead of making selections and discrediting UK training bodies, you should rather counsel him/her to ask if the body he (Jusome) talks about is registered and recognised.

P.S: Also, with due respect to ISPON, i think if we really need to promote the awareness of health and safety and its practice here in Nigeria, we need to promote other Nigeria certification bodies as well. Bodies such as NISCN (which is even the mother of ISPON), Nigeria Safety Council (NSC) are also recognised by law.

People are reading and thus deserve a balanced counsel.

Thank you very much Bearshare. However did you note in my write up calling out certifications and discrediting them? I try to advice people who want a career in hse by telling them what is obtainable and by telling them the truth... Putting aside emotions, sentiments, prefrences or political affiliation. Your just being emotional about something I know nothing of...

Are there other safety bodies and certifications YES they are in fact they are many BUT when starting out in HSE career or getting prepared what do organizations ask for? you will notice they ask for Nebosh, iosh, cieh, oshas, iso 9001:2015, iso 45001, iso 14001:2015 and presently Ispon. Does it mean other certifications and safety bodies don't know what they are doing? No, Does it mean other safety certifications are discredited? NO

Then as one decides to advance in his HSE career one can decide to do trainings on Hazid, hazop or become a specialist in an area of HSE, you can decide to do other trainings and obtain certifications from various bodies.

The thing with HSE is getting into the field first and how do you do that ? One way is by getting the necessary certifications and trainings required by organizations.

In life one just have to position him or herself for success.

There are a whole lot of things written on this thread that it will take days for someone to actually go through all of them.

Anyway thanks for your answer, i really appreciate. i have gone through the certificate offered by Novelecentre and i wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone wishing to get HSE 1,2 and 3 and UK PMP

They seem quite okay. I also plan to do my NebIGC with them just for the fun of it. Hope fully by 2017 during my annual vacation. I also wish I could do the NebIDip.

For HSE 1,2,3, please inquire. Have they been certified by ISPON to offer this? Will ISPON not require that to be a member and recognised HSE Professional, you need to undergo their own Level 1,2 and 3 classes? Recall ISPON is now backed by law and calls it when it comes to HSE Professional Practise in Nigeria.

These are the few things to find out. However, if you don't mind doing both, then no wahalah. No knowledge is lost.
Enjoy.

On a normal full time basis, it takes about 6-8 weeks to run. There are usually 3 units and each Unit takes about 2 weeks each. For now, I do not know about any trainer accredited to offer this.

Perhaps others might.

Well, since I do not know a Nigerian accredited center I will not know the cost in Nigeria. However, I know the average cost in the US and UK.

Is it only pple dat studied sciences dat can do HSE cos i read accounting and i dnt knw if it is beneficial to me.

HSE is more of a professional/practical field of study than an ''academic'' one. So to speak.

As long as you can study, learn the soft and hard skills, prove yourself and pass the professional exams, then Yes. You can be a HSE Professional regardless of your background.

Secondly, HSE is ubiquitous. There is even the Sociology and Psychology of Public HSE. There is Environmental Accounting/Economics. There is Food Safety, Marine Safety, Office Safety, Industrial Safety, Factory Safety, Road Safety, Aviation Safety, House Hold Safety, School Safety, Play Ground Safety, etc..

The important thing is learning the principles and skills for HSE Risk Engineering and Management e.g. from the ISO 31000 perspective. With the knowledge, principles and skills you can function basically as a safety professional.
