Rumour of Shekau’s death spreads
In a related development, rumour of the death of the sect’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, and some of his commanders in the battle with troops in Konduga was spreading across Borno State, as of the time of filing this report.

Shekau’s reported death is contained in the account of some of the survivours of an attack of the sect on Mainok on Friday, as they said they were afraid of returning to the town “because we are told the insurgents are mad as a result of the killing of their leader, Abubakar Shekau, in Konduga.”

Reports reaching Sunday Tribune in Maiduguri, the state capital, indicated that over 300 people were killed when the insurgents attacked Mainok market on that Friday in what was believed to be a retaliation of the leader’s death as villagers were in the peak of trading on the market day.

A local, Modu Jakana, who narrowly escaped that attack, told Sunday Tribune that the insurgents came in from all angles, “shooting the people as if they were exchanging fire with the military. We don’t know how we escaped, but we were so lucky. They were so determined to kill everybody. I saw so many corpses while we were running for dear lives. At the main road, vehicles that were on top speed also killed so many people as there was confusion everywhere.

“This morning, some of our people told us that over 300 people, including some of the insurgents, were killed because we learnt that the military came and engaged them in a fierce fight.

‘There is calm, but we won’t return to Mainok’
“For now, they said calm has returned, but we cannot go back because these people may strike again. They said the people (insurgents) are mad, following the killing of their leader, Abubakar Shekau, during the attack in Konduga.”

When asked how sure he was that Shekau, the leader of the sect, was killed, he said, “look, this picture is being circulated after the attack in Konduga. If you know Shekau very well, you will know he is the one in this picture. We all know him very well. Many of his commanders were also killed during the attack. We learnt that some of them that were caught alive are held in the barracks.

“The remaining ones are those attacking people now. They have gone wild, but we were also told that the soldiers are in pursuit of them. Our prayer is that they would all fall and our state can experience peace again.”

Also, a military source claimed the insurgents were looking for food to sustain their terror acts, a development which made them to invade Mainok market, about 56 kilometres from Maiduguri, on Friday afternoon. He said they carted away foodstuffs and money belonging to the traders after killing many people.

A Maiduguri resident, Alloy Ikechukwu, who travelled along the Maiduguri – Damaturu road on Friday, also told journalists that the attackers stormed the market at about 1.30 p.m.

Where is the evidence

I suspect that this is a ploy to cause the military to relax and give BH time to launch a surprise attack in several weeks or months to come.

BH has launched 3 failed attempts to capture Maiduguri through Konduga.

This is a ploy to cause the military to relax.
Once the military is relaxed, they would launch a surprise night attack in several weeks or months to come.

Nigeria should send spies to verify

The guy below has been unusually silent, you see why I called him a BH propagandist for trying to downplay the first crucial loss of BH on the alter of "fact finding mission" as he insinuated . . . .

I remember one moniker called him a BH supporter when he called BH attack a probe attack

Are you that moniker.?

Well I told NL and the military when the second attack was on, that if they can resist the second and third attacks, BH will not attack in weeks/months to come.

This rumour is just to relax the military as they rebuild fresh forces to catch the military off guard

The rumour is plausible If u notice the recent calm to the activities of the sect and their silence since after the Kontuga incidents one can likely link it with d same thing that happened during the time the former Shekaur died before this last one emerged.

Yes I did label him a BH propagandist when I saw his obvious desperation in downplaying BH serious losses and casualties. I hope the Military will be on high alert and finally take the fight to the insurgents no matter where their safe havens are . . . .

Shekau's death is not the issue but total defeat of the insurgents is what Nigerians want. #many shekaus can arise.

I pray this is true. However of what significance is his death in winning the war, if at the weakest point of BH, the government is considering the release of 30 commanders in exchange for the kidnapped girls? Are they trying to fill the vacuum?

grin... Is Shekau now a name given to their leaders?! First Shekau died?! I believe he never died though. Maybe he just died now. Going by your write-up, another Shekau may emerge!

The fear of ambush is preventing the Military from attacking those bastards.

You are correct, then round the clock lethal air based surveillance should be deployed against those maggots.

as far as am concerned, without his corpse being shown on national tv, he is still alive. Shekau is now a position in boko haram camp that anyone can be elected into. When mohamed yusuf was killed, we all knew about it so tomorrow nobodz can come out claiming to be him.

it is possible since they will want to create the impression to deny the death for them to remain relevance but whichever way, with this last defeat they suffer boko haram cannot never be d same again, I see the beginning of their end.
