The Nigerian Voting public can be divided into 3 – The Opportunists, The Docile and the Enlightened. This breakdown accounts for why building the road to Nigerian political redemption or emancipation is non-feasible.

The Opportunists – They constitute 10% of the voting public. They are the card carrying party members, they are the politicians and they hustle for political positions. They are greedy, corrupt and they take politics to be a do or die affair. They are desperate and will initiate violence if elections don’t go their way. Some are actually elected and mostly responsible for the economic doldrums Nigeria is now. To them political positions are their personal family inheritance and they act in such manner to make others believe so. They use deceptions and inducement to sell their corrupt ideologies.

The Docile – They constitute 65% of the Nigerian voting public. They are the crowd and bulk of the election. They neither have or believe in any political ideology nor have favorite candidates. Their choice of political candidates will be determined by any other factors except for common sense, principle or rationality. They are the ones that will cast their votes based on tribal sentiments, religion or gender discrimination. They readily will exchange their mandates for plates of rice or box of matches because they lack any form of intellectual discretions. Funny enough their votes sway the election. You will be surprised that many of them have one form of formal education. They are the crowd that would vote in a monkey if the price is right and unfortunately they are at the bad economic receiving ends.

The Enlightened – They constitute 25% of the voting public. They are mostly the elites, majority are very educated, they cut across the middle to upper social class of the society. They are principled, follow the political trends and can discern the credible political candidates. They do elaborate analysis of the political situations and most times they are accurate. They are the ones who mostly dominate the virtual political world, the social media world, write analysis and articles and get into intellectual political arguments. The only problem of this group is they would never move a step to actually exercise that civil right. They are all words no action, they would not get involved in any public affair except it adversely affects their personal life. They would not sacrifice their comfort for anybody or the society, very selfish lots and except they are forced or blackmailed to vote they would not but they complain the most.

So where do you belong?
