Poverty In Nigeria by Eim9(m): 1:18pm On Oct 11, 2014
Poverty in Nigeria has not reduced in any
way. The main cause of poverty in Nigeria
is due to the high level of impunity in the
country especially in the government. It is
a case where the Elites would be the ones
using the country’s funds while the
masses wallow in suffering and poverty.
The amount of money or funds which the
government consume is really ridiculous.
The Nigerian president came out a few
days ago and made a shocking statement
which said and i quote, “Poverty has
reduced by 50%”. I was infuriated and
that was what prompted me to put down
this write up so that the world won’t be
decieved by any form of pretence. I can
never concur to that statement and I am
sure that the same goes with most
Nigerians (masses). Unemployment in
Nigeria is the main poverty causing
factor. The president says poverty has
reduced, yet the cost of purchasing food
stuff is high and exorbitant, the power
supply is really bad, to the extent that
most people go ahead to buy generators
to light up, considering the fact that the
price of petrol is very high. Nigerians do
not have adequate power supply, yet the
PHCN (power holding company of
Nigeria) still go around distributing
exorbitant bills to people. Bills that are
not justified by the services which the
PHCN supply. Nigeria with the second or
highest GDP in africa is meant to be a
country where the citizens tend to live
with Little or no poverty. But the reverse
is the case (poverty rate is high). Some
people cannot even settle down for three
square meals. It has come to my
unpleasant notice that the Elites in
Nigeria (the government) are favoured
and the citizens (the masses) are left to
fight for food.
Imagine the governors and its officials
i.e those in power, having not less than
five automobiles, three or four personal
buildings or houses in the country and
outside and also a personal private jet.
Whoosh!! *deep breath* smh… Yet
transportation is expensive and some
people don’t even have jobs to atleast get
a family car. Oohh!!! If you ask twenty
people of thier view on poverty, all the
twenty would confirm that the poverty
rate is not decreasing at all. Poverty in
Nigeria is mainly caused by
unemployment, and this is why there is
increased crime rate,illegal activities,etc.
The US citizens would always be proud of
thier government not because there is no
poverty, but because it is minimal and i
am sure that poverty there has reduced
by 85%.
Let me see your views on this in the
comment box. Those from other
countries or in Nigeria can ask questions
or bring your own view concerning
poverty in your country. Do you think it is
minimal in your country? If posible tell
me what you think can be done to reduce
the high rate of poverty.
