Sodiq popoola and Imoh Ezekiel (two men on the bottom left), best outfield players on the night.

Sodiq is a really small guy...

I'd reckon he's around 5ft 2" -- 5ft 5". A "little" lad with "mighty" potentials.

It's not by size ooo.... Hahahaha.... Maradona, Messi, Valbuena, Tijani Babangida, etc... Hmm...

Popoola is like a dynamite. And dynamite comes in "small packages" #smiles

You're not alone in that thought Sir.

Not only Awoniyi but Junior Ajayi. Both seem to have their chances of being on the final squad to Rio getting slimmer and slimmer by the day.

Osimhen stands a better chance than the duo.

The competition is too fierce.

tbaba1234:
Am I the only one thinking, Awoniyi might miss the Olympics if he does not improve?

Osimhen was far more dangerous than him.

When we bring in Iheanacho and Success, Awoniyi's position will start getting shaky.

come off but did enough for his deputy to
complete the job….9/10
Musa Mohammed: A full back who is full of

dangerous freekicks at the edge of Nigeria’s box
however his last ditch tackle bailed Nigeria from

Ndifreke Effiong: Had a first half to forget as his
side of defence was a through fare for the
Brazilians but he never stopped working hard and
improved in the second half with help from Stanley

Keigo Erimuya: Hard in tackle and solid with the
ball at his feet but didn’t show enough
understanding with Segun Oduduwa as they were
both guilty of letting the Brazilians slip behind in
the first half, showed good turn of pace….5/10
Segun Oduduwa: Not so good in tackles and aerial
balls but showed impeccable reading of the game,
made timely intervention and was by far the brain
of the Nigeria back four….6.5/10
Ovbokha Agboyi: Did nothing spectacular in the

Amoo Praises U-23 Eagles After Shock Victory Over Brazil

The interim head coach of the Nigeria U-23 team, Fatai Amoo, has said the display of the team against hosts Brazil has justified their emergence as African champions, and shown that they really can win gold at the Olympics in Rio in August.

Amoo told the Nigeria Football Federation official website after Thursday night's 1-0 win that his boys struggled to contain the hosts in the first half as they launched their attack from the left wing, but the team was able to redress that in the second half.

"The first half was very difficult for us, but then it is expected, having in mind that we scored an early goal and as such it was expected they would come all out against us to get the equalizer, but I must give my boys a lot of credit for holding their own," Amoo, who is standing in for Super Eagles caretaker coach Samson Siasia, said.

"The boys did a great job if you recall that 80 percent of the players we brought here were just meeting one another for the first time, and we needed to see all of them in a match situation. I’m happy we have seen them and this is hoping that as we play more friendlies, we'll discover more players that will compete for jerseys before the Olympics proper.

"No doubt, our goalkeeper (Emmanuel Daniel) kept us in the game with a number of great saves before he was substituted.

Even the substitute (Yusuf Mohammed) also did his bit. All in all, some players like Ezekiel Imoh and Sodiq Popoola were outstanding and I am happy for the team."

Brazil, who are yet to win Olympics football gold, created the better chances, but they either failed to put them away or goalkeeper Daniel and his defence were resolute in keeping them out.

Ubong Ekpai fired the match winner for Nigeria off a rebound after just four minutes, when Imoh, who was a thorn in the flesh of the Brazilians went past his marker and his resultant pull out saw Popoola hitting a shot that rebounded for Ekpai to score.

Thereafter, Brazil threw everything at Nigeria, coming close in the 19th minute through Felipe Anderson and on 27 minutes, when Alisson’s angled header crashed against the crossbar.

Turkey-based Nigeria defender Musa Mohammed was booked in the 16th minute, for stamping on a Brazilian midfielder.‎ For the second half, Brazil made three changes, throwing in Wallace, Clayton and Wendell.

Clayton threatened the Nigerian goal just two minutes after his introduction, but goalkeeper Daniel was alive to his responsibilities. Malcolm and Andreas Pereira of Manchester United were also brought on but they just could not get past the Nigeria backline. ‎

‎Nigeria made four changes, which saw Victor Osimhen come in for Taiwo Awoniyi, Junior Ajayi for Ekpai, Amaefule Chizoba for Keigo and Sincere Seth for Ovbokha.

With the following U23 players featuring for Super Eagles yesterday:
Stanley Amuzie
Shehu Abdullahi
Oghenekaro Etebo
Moses Simon
Kelechi Iheanacho
Alex Iwobi
Azubuike Okechukwu (bench)
We are begining to have a glimps of players that would make it to Rio.

I may be alone on this but i have never seen Awoniyi as a top class player. Even right from his U17 days. Sentiments aside he and Ajayi may likely nt make it to Rio. We still have more dangerous CF like Isaac Success, Chisom Chikatara and Aaron Samuel all whom are nt even sure of making it.

I dnt know whether I am alone on this bt we need to kick against d inclusion of Ighalo in this team.At a pt in d Egypt game when Ighalo was masked out i thought of another striker on d bench hu can come in and steal d show bt none.

Besides Ighalo is ageing and we need to raise younger strikers to gradually take over and Rio would b d right place to do that.

I give kudos to d boys that beat Brazil even with d absence of 7 star players hu played agsinst Egypt.

There are a lot if U23 dat were nt involved in any of the two games (Brazil and Egpypt). I believe Siasia would give opportunities to them to play in our next U23 friendly. It may nt b outside d country. We can play any other of d African teams dat qualified.

Why should I ate Woniyi above other Strikers like Chikatara, Ajayi, Kayode.... Who are very much ahead of Awoniyi, age and experience wise.

Awoniyi is not yet ready for not ready for the party. Unless the Coach uses sentiments as a criterial for his selection.

Awoniyi has good defensive abilities aside his striking role, but we just need something more than that. The competion for strikers will be too much for him to contain. He can still up his game to find a place in the next U20 team. Afterall, he is still young.

Tottenham Hotspur Winger Oduwa Shows Flashes Of Brilliance In Nigeria Debut

Tottenham Hotspur starlet Nathan Oduwa made his international debut for the Nigeria U23s on Thursday night in their shock 1-0 victory against their Brazilian counterparts at the Estádio Kléber Andrade.

If there was any doubt surrounding the future of the winger, it was put to rest yesterday when he stepped out onto the pitch in the closing minutes as replacement for Anderlecht loanee Imoh Ezekiel.

Oduwa showed glimpses of his potential in the few minutes he was in action but was not rewarded with a goal on his debut, with Nigeria playing defensively in order to protect a first-half lead.

The Londoner had 12 caps in total for the youth teams of England prior to making his maiden appearance for Nigeria.

The 20-year-old Oduwa is set to return to Spurs after his loan spell with Colchester United.

Emmanuel Daniel Catches The Eye Of Nigeria Coach

Nigeria U23s interim coach Fatai Amoo was delighted with the performance of his charges against Brazil on Friday night but Enugu Rangers glovesman Emmanuel Daniel was singled out for special praise.

Daniel made five important saves before his substitution and the 1-0 scoreline in favour of the Dream Team at the end of the contest would have been different.

“The boys did a great job if you recall that 80 percent of the boys we brought here were just meeting one another for the first time, and we needed to see all of them in match situation,” said Fatai Amoo to thenff.com.

“I’m happy we have seen them and this is hoping that as we play more friendlies, we would discover more players that will compete for jerseys before the Olympics proper.

“No doubt, our goalkeeper (Emmanuel Daniel) kept us in the game with a number of great saves before he was substituted. Even the substitute (Yusuf Mohammed) also did his bit.”
Ubong Ekpai fired the match-winner for Nigeria off a rebound after just four minutes.

Liverpool youngster & Nigerian wonderkid handed Premier League target by ambitious academy chief
Posted by Gary Emmerson

Liverpool Academy director Alex Inglethorpe has urged Sheyi Ojoto build on his fine recent form and make a start in the Premier League.

The Nigerian youngster spent time on loan with Championship side Wolves earlier in the season, and impressed while strutting his stuff in the second tier. The West African made 17 showings in the Championship—of which five were starts—scoring twice and contributing three assists.

He found the net for Liverpool in the Reds’ FA Cup third round replay against Exeter City at Anfield and, to date, has made four senior appearances for the Merseysiders.

Speaking to the Liverpool official website, academy director Alex Inglethorpe has urged the young forward to build on his recent fine form and begin to make his mark in the Premier League.

“That experience at Wolves would have helped him and Sheyi is starting to realise what it will take for him to have an impact on the first team,” Inglethorpe told LiverpoolFC.com.

“I really like working with Sheyi and he is someone who I have seen a huge improvement in over the last two to three years,” he contined.

“It was fantastic to see him make his Premier League debut and the next challenge for him is to try now to make a Premier League start.

“He has got a lot of wonderful competition around him and what he has to do is find a way of ticking the next box, which is to start a Premier League game.”

Ojo was born in Hamel Hempstead and began his youth career at Milton Keynes Dons before moving to Liverpool in 2011. He spent time on loan at Wigan Athletic during 2015, and has also represented England at every youth level from U16 to U19.

However, the player may yet choose to follow the likes of Alex Iwobi and Victor Moses in choosing to pursue an international future with the Super Eagles.

Former Nigeria international Dominic Iorfa will be in the crowd to watch his son feature for England U21 in a European qualifier in Switzerland today.

Iorfa, a jet-heeled winger known as ‘Gboko Express’ in his playing days at BCC Lions and Abiola Babes, said he will be in the stands to watch Dominic Iorfa Jnr in England action.

The match will be played in Thun.
England are unbeaten in four matches and three points clear of Switzerland at the top of their qualifying group for the championship in Poland in the summer.

Wolves defender Dominic Iorfa Jnr is on a squad that boast of several players with Nigerian roots – Dominic Solanke, Jordan Ibe and Chuba Akpom.

I believe eventually Dominic Iorfa Jnr will don Nigeria's colors at the senior level.

He's really another Right-back talent option I'm really looking at for the future.

His father, Dominic Iorfa Snr, once said that he wants his son to keep developing in the English system being exposed to more matches as the English U-21s play regular friendlies and competitive qualifying matches.

He says once his son is ready and reaches age 21/22, he will likely switch allegiance to Nigeria.

Well, time will tell.... The English media are currently mourning losing Iwobi. Almost every where I go on the internet for the english sites, I read analyses and views of various English journalists and sportswriters condemning their F.A for not being proactive early enough to have spotted Iwobi. They complained that England stopped extending invitations to Iwobi after he featured at U-16, U-17, and U-18 levels. He never featured for their U-19s not to mention their U-21s.

Well, england should shut it. When they lured Dele Alli, didn't they know he was Nigerian too? Anyway, Alli wanted to play for England sef, so no biggie.

We have Iwobi, following in Victor Moses' footsteps in this case. Hopefully, a couple of others will follow suit... Even Balogun chose Nigeria over waiting for a Germany call-up.

Let England mourn all they want....

Next targets:
-Ola Aina (Chelsea FC)
-Tosin Adarabioyo (Manchester City FC)
-and a couple of others.

Not all Anglo-Nigerians or foreign-bred with Nigerian blood will choose us eventually AND not all of them are even Super Eagles materials. #fact

Nigeria can't invite or lure them all... We'll just do the best we can. But we have our central bed and limitless channel-source of super talents (One of the reasons why Nigeria can never be down in football fortunes for so long or run dry of top players).

Nigeria also needs to be proactive like we were with Iwobi. Iwobi has JJ Okocha as an uncle so his own was easy.

If we spot a talent, get in touch with him. The truth is that, most players will choose the one, who comes first.

[b]Kelechi Iheanacho has been held back by Manuel Pellegrini this season

The Man City youngster has had his progress stifled by the club's outgoing manager - and fans will be hoping Pep Guardiola takes a different appraoch.

It's rare to see a young player emerge with genuine world-class potential – but it's one of the most exciting and enjoyable aspects of following football. To see a teenager come into a senior side and adapt quickly, displaying not just technical quality but also a seemingly unnatural ability to handle the pressure, feels special, as if you're witnessing the start of a legacy that will be remembered for years to come.

It's been quite some time since Manchester City fans have enjoyed that feeling. The vast and rapid improvement in their first-team squad post-takeover means their academy players have never had it harder. The jump from youth ranks into the senior side is now huge and only those displaying extreme talent will be given opportunities.

But Kelechi Iheanacho has bucked the trend. Here is a City teenager equipped with everything he needs to reach the top of the game. Naturally gifted with a wonderful touch, he has great vision and intelligence,. There are few technical holes in his game.

But what is perhaps more encouraging for the City staff is his belief. Iheanacho knows he's set to make an impression in the game and there's a determination to ensure he fulfils his potential.

"It’s a great moment but it’s not the best moment because the best moments are yet to come,” he said earlier this season when asked whether his last-gasp winner at Crystal Palace back in September was the highlight of his career to date. It's that attitude that marks him out as special.

City have on their hands a player of serious ability, which is why Manuel Pellegrini's cautious approach has annoyed some of the club's fans. Iheanacho has been vastly underused this season, inexplicably placed behind Wilfried Bony in the pecking order. It's been unforgivable from the outgoing manager.

The facts make Pellegrini's ordering of his strikers seem absurd. Iheanacho has only started seven times, spending a total of 787 minutes on the pitch - nowhere near enough for a player of his calibre - yet has scored a goal every 87 minutes, a remarkable record for one so young.

Bony, on the other hand, has had plenty of opportunities. He's made 28 appearances (16 starts) and scored eight goals in his 1,195 minutes of action – a goal every 149 minutes.

Bony's malaise goes beyond mere facts, though. His last three displays – against Aston Villa, Norwich and Manchester United – were woeful. A poor touch, a distinct lack of movement and little confidence in front of goal - it's difficult to see what he brings to the side.

Pep Guardiola is likely to make him available for transfer this summer. The Ivorian showed during his time at Swansea he can be useful – but he isn't suited to City's pass-and-move approach.

Iheanacho, who made his full international debut on Friday, is a rare talent, one that deserves to be fast-tracked to 50 games in order to maximise his quality as quickly as possible. Pellegrini has held him back. City fans will be hoping Guardiola takes a very different approach.

Boss Confirms: Liverpool are in 'constant contact' with 'wonderful' striker. Next Stop Anfield?

In November 2015, Liverpool snapped up Nigerian youngster Taiwo Awoniyi, who is currently on loan as FSV Frankfurt, and according to the club's boss, the Reds are keeping a close eye on the 18-year old striker's progress.

Speaking to TF this week, Of course, Clemens Krüger insisted that FSV are 'very satisfied' with Awoniyi's performances, and revealed that he and the club are 'constant contact with Liverpool'. He explained:

"We are reporting regularly Awoniyi's sporting development and on his appearances for the Nigerian under 23 national. The contact with Liverpool has been very good from the beginning".

Some info about Awoniyi:
*Mar 2016: Scored his first goal for FSV on the 18th March.

* Prior to signing for Liverpool, Manchester United ' reps' spoke with Awoniyi, but interest died off due to uncertainty over registration rights.

* Awoniyi is a Chelsea fan, and playing for the London club is one of his ' dreams'.

*Apr 2015: Kogi United's goalkeeper coach, Wasiu Lawal, told SL10:"He [Awoniyi] is a very wonderful striker. I give him all the credit for Nigeria’s qualification to the All Africa Games. The whole team did a very good job, but he stands tall".

*Oct 2013: Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan is also impressed, and after watching Awoniyi play for Nigeria, told FIFA.com:"I like him, that No18, Awoniyi, he is a good player. He does all the work up there and creates a lot.”

*Oct 2013: Helped Nigeria win the U17 World Cup.

*Nov 2013: Upon hearing Gyan's praise, Awoniyi enthused:“Wow. He [Gyan] is such a great striker and he knows that it isn’t always about scoring. You have to work hard so that your team-mates can get the goals.”

As noted many times, no foreign attacking player has ever made it through the Academy to become a first-team regular at Liverpool, so Awoniyi will face the same problems as countless others over the years.

On the plus side, he appears to have the right attitude to succeed, but like so many others, he may end up being corrupted by the pernicious greed at the heart of the modern game.

Until then, Awoniyi is a man of simple tastes, and in comparison to pampered, grossly overpraised players like Raheem Sterling, he is refreshingly down to earth.

Indeed, after winning the U-17 World Cup, Awoniyi told FIFA.com:
“It [winning] changed the lives of most of us, many got clubs abroad and changed the lives of our families. I was able to build a house for myself, like most of the other players in the team.”

It remains to be seen whether Awoniyi will stay at Anfield next season, or be sent back out on loan, but I'll take a player with this attitude over Sterling and his blinged-up cronies every day of the week.

He played for the team on Thursday in a friendly against Oulu.
