History of the Bible: Most Controversial Book In The World by Macelliot(m): 8:29am On Oct 19, 2014
The Holy Bible: The Bible is unique, "different from all others", in the following ways (plus a multitude more)...

The Bible is unique in its "continuity". It's a book written over a 1,500 year
span; written over 40 generations; written by more than 40 authors, from every
walk of life -- including kings, peasants, philosophers, fishermen, poets, statesmen, scholars, prophets, ... etc.
It's a book written in different places
ranging from the wilderness of Mount Sinai to the prison walls of Paul! It's a
book written at different times of peace and war, at different moods of joy and sorrow. It's a book written on three continents (Asia, Africa, and Europe), written in three languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek).
Finally, it's a book
whose subject matter includes hundreds of topics. Yet, the biblical authors
spoke with harmony and continuity from Genesis to Revelation about one unfolding story: "God's redemption of the human race."

The Bible is unique in its "circulation". The Bible has been read by more people and published in more languages than any other book in history. More than 40 years ago, the British and Foreign Bible Society had to publish "one
copy every three seconds day and night; 22 copies every minute; 1,369 copies
every hour of every day; 32,876 copies every day. No other book has known
anything approaching this constant circulation.
The Bible is unique in its "translation". It is one of the first major books translated. It has been translated and retranslated, and paraphrased, more than any other book in existence. The Encyclopedia Britanica says that "by 1966, the whole Bible has appeared in 240 languages and dialects. One or more of the Bible's books has been translated to 739 additional ones." Between 1950 and 1960, more than 3000 Bible translators were at work!
The Bible is unique in its "survival". Being written on material that perishes and having to be copied and recopied for hundreds of years before the invention
of the printing press did not diminish the style, correctness, or existence of the Bible. Compared with other ancient writings, the Bible has more manuscript evidence than any ten pieces of classical literature combined.
The Bible
survived not only ime, but also persecution, both political and
intellectual.

Voltaire, the noted French writer, who died in 1778, said that in one hundred years from his time Christianity would be swept from existence. Only fifty years after Voltaire's death, the Geneva Bible Society
used his press and his house to produce stacks of Bibles.

What an irony of
history! The Bible survives every day through criticism. No other book has been
so chopped, knived, sifted, scrutinized, and vilified. No other book has been subjected to such mass attacks. Nevertheless, it remains the book most read and most cherished until this very day. If this criticism was ever effective in the past, it would have rendered the Bible unworthy of the critics' attention
today.
The fact that critics continue to target the Bible proves that their past criticism did nothing less than strengthen the belief in the Bible itself!
.
The Bible has been hated, envied, maimed, burned, banned, criticize, knived, chopped, vilified, still yet, it remains the most best selling book and the most controversial book in the whole world........

The bible is delicate and spiritual,

if one intentionally burns the bible, his life will never be thesame.

Ordinarilly holding the bible when enemies are about to attack you(a real born again),gives you a kind of spiritual strength.

No ordinary person can pick the bible, read it and understand it. . Understanding of the bible doesn't require reading alone but meditation.

I do not agree that the bible is the most controversial....but among the most distributed...yes...
macelliot how come you didn't point out that many books that predate "jesus" by atleast a century were included in the bible and then all books concerning christianity were voted to be included....the remaining "gods word" were discarded...even when they are still referenced by books included undecided

Controversial indeed!
In d 'Holy' Bible:
the word "Bible" is never mentioned
the religion 'Christianity' is never mentioned
'Lent' fast never mentioned
'Holy' pilgrimage to Israel never mentioned
Christmas can't be seen from Genesis to Revelation
Thanks to d op, he also made us realize d fact dt it wasn't revealed from God but authored by MAN, many men actually nd d resultant Bible we all see now is a resultant of a voting pattern dt brought books from different authors together. You also failed to mention dt there re different versions of d Bible each having its own peculiarities.

The Bible is the most controversial. No other book can compete with it.
The Bible is a collections of books and scriptures...
The bible contains the Old and New testament. The Old testaments contain the five books of the
Jewish Torah or Pentateuch("teaching" or "law"wink, the Nevi'im ("prophets"wink, and
the Ketuvim ("writings"wink.
Bible was coined from a greek word "biblia" which means books.

I hardly call a book that has over 1.2 billion adherents controversial.....and you still failed to mention how by popular vote....the bible was compiled with its books....most ranging from unknown authors...and centuries before "christ" allegedly lived... smiley

the Bible is but a compendium! It's not a Book, not one written by one man say for instance Jesus Christ...

Let me hint you-
Even though the Gospels go under the names of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, they were, in fact, written anonymously.

Not even the Bible claims that Mark was an eye witness to Jesus’ ministry. Modern, non-Christian biblical scholars believe that the gospel of Mark was written in Syria by an unknown Christian no earlier than AD 70, using various sources including a passion narrative (probably written) collections of miracles stories (oral or written), apocalyptic traditions (probably written), and disputations and didactic sayings (some possibly written). These stories were in circulation year after year, told in different languages and in different countries from that of Jesus.
That’s it. The source for the gospel of Mark is other peoples’ stories and writings. In other words, all of Mark’s sources were at best, second hand, more likely fifth or sixth hand. What happens to stories that circulate orally for years? Obviously, they come to be changed in the retelling.

Comparing Matthew 15:4 with Mark 7:10, Mark represents a more Gentile attitude in quoting the Old Testament as "Moses said" rather than "God said." Matthew, a Jew, would never have attributed the 10 commandments to Moses. It was God who said them, as all Jews will tell you. Naturally, there are many places in the first five books of the Bible which have 'And God said', but which are referred to by Jews as the Books of Moses...

This is just the New Testament (synoptic* gospels) not to mention mixing it with the Old Testament; plus confusing parables or anecdotes with real happenings....

The Bible is spiritually resourceful
