simplynola:
Now its the turn of cocoa, before it was oil after they impoverished Nigerians and enriched themselves, now its going dry, no more customers. its the turn of cocoa, beverage prices will start to skyrocket, Nigerians think their leaders want the best for them, they start to applause them not knowing the innovation is only to keep them wealthy,a tin of milo or bournvita will go for N6,500 soon, Eruku Oshodi(cocoa powder) will sell for N3,000, Nigerians will start protesting the removal of subsidy on cocoa. Cocoa is not like oil that flows everyday, it takes cocoa tree 3- 5 years to yield a crop. The oil that has been existing before now, what has been the benefit to Nigerians all along, now its cocoa.. of what benefit please? Tears run dry!
pathetic level of pessimism

This is not bad news but it would be better to talk also about cocoa processing factories so we add more value and create more EMPLOYMENT before exporting or even convert to cocoa drinks and chocolate locally.
Nevertheless, another sign that our dear country is on the rise again

Good point but guess what. Our terms of trade are skewed. Oyinbo get sense and we stupid. If you check, the import duty on process food is low. while the export duty on processed food is high. in other words we negotiated not to compete globally. the agreement on terms of trade don't favour Africa on exports.

Even the Government knows that the only way to survive being broke and sustainable, robust economy is through investing rigorously in agribusiness; without which the country will.not be able to.finance its expenses.

Government needs to do more by investing more, although govt at various level is trying to make progress.

...Do Agric. Change your levels

If China, India, South Korea etc can do it, why can't we also break the poverty cycle?

If truly FG can generate $1.3b from cocoa in 2014 alone that is almost gone, how more of Palm, Casava, life stocks etc.
Then, what's the need for stabilizing our economy with $5b that our Banana plantations can take care of?

...Story 4 D gods!

Let me ask u. Did u see madam Ngozi's name on that write up? If u didn't see hover name then why the silly comment. When has the ministry of agriculture and finance being run by the same office? Pls argue constructively and stop being too negative. It doesn't help. Nigerians need some positive news once in while. Besides no mater how much u hate the government of GEJ, u can't deny that the minister of agriculture has surpassed expectations of all. I mean, if that man comes for any elected position many well thinking Nigerians will stand behind him.

We are not seeing the beenfits of oil...because the oil money is not enough to begin with.

We produce the same amount of oil as the United Arab Emirates and Algeria....and all for a population of 170 million, against the UAE's 8million and Algeria's 37million people.(That is why we should regard corruption very seriously....they are stealing from an already meager bank account).

Worse, we Nigerians do not use our oil money to make more money. What we should have done since 1970 with our oil money would have been to spend it massively on power, transport, education, and industrial development....especially Ajaokuta.

But we do not. Instead we use the oil money for looting and importation...further diminishing the pot.

And at the end of the day....we are poor. and even poorer.

Yes, there are oil rich countries that are economically strong....but they also have small populations. And when push comes to shove...an oil rich economy is vulnerable to big nations (Libya was easily bombed and wrecked by the West BECAUSE libyans refused to develop a domestic defence industry. Instead....they imported weapons from the West. Guess what happened when war broke out....you do not fight a weapon maker with the weapons he made for you...because he knows how to counter such weapons.).

Until Nigeria follows Germany, Japan , South Korea, China, even Indonesia....and industrializes....we are not going to enjoy riches in this country.

Oil is a curse.

^^^Abeg, stop blaming oyel for our woes in this country! It's like a man winning the lottery, and frits the money away on drink, drugs, fast cars, and even faster women; and then when he's wasted the lot he turns around and says money is a curse!!!

The useless military we've had in this country since the late 60s is the biggest curse i see! The only qualification they had in running the economy of a huge complicated country like Nigeria was brute force, and they laid the foundation for the rot we're experiencing in Nigeria today! Do you know that during the 60s we were once at par or better than the present day Asian Tigers of Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea? Blatant and in-your-face corruption, nepotism, federal character and quota-system, decline in status of education and merit......all these maladies have brought us to where we are today! And while the Asian Tigers that were once our contemporaries have now disappeared into the horizon, leaving us for dead, we're left to splutter and cough on the dust left in their wake as we continue the slow and tortuous journey in our beaten-up jalopy, and rue the wrong choices we've made as a people!

I guess acknowledging the positive measures going on in the cocoa, cassava, rice etc sectors will surely be a good motivation to also address other areas that have been abandoned by successive clueless regimes and federal administrations.

But we don't even process ennof for our local demand..the best is foe us to export less raw food and instead turn them to Finnish goods for local market.

We'll ssaid,we had the most wasteful, clueless and corrupt millitary the world has ever seen, think of the fact that some of the most prosperous countries in the world today can actually trace their growth to visionary millitary leaders, countries like:Argentina,Brazil,Libya,,most of the asian tigers,Chile, even south Korea...but our own Millitary,"CAME,THEY SAW AND THEY SQUANDERED...the reason I cudnt understand why some ppl were praising Gowon the other day,..that guy laid the foundation for nigerias retrogression.

The Asian Tigers were run by the Millitary (South Korea) or civilian dictators (Singapore) or one party (Malaysia).

The reason why they shot ahead of Nigeria is that they have limited resources....so as a result , they had to be resourceful. They invested in education, and scientific development.

Subsequently they became industrial superpowers.

Nigeria has too many resources...which we export to industrial countries, and share the money which goes into importing (a nice and easy way to lose money as imports are very expensive) and looting. Now, many Asian countires also had leaders who looted. Problem is, living miles away from Europe....they had to invest the money at home....and they did in things like factories....which had to work. Of course light and water must run well.

Moral of the Asian tigers.....live like you have no resources. Otherwise, you become an oil sodden, dutch diseased economy.

Oil is (still) a curse.

You are very correct and the industrialisation initiatives, such as the auto policy, reforms in the power sector are steps in that direction by this current federal administration instead of simply importing cheap & cheerful consumer items from everywhere.
I hope the agricultural revival will feed into agro-industrial growth as well.

The states and LGAs need to however focus on ensuring ALL our children go to school in line with their constitutional responsibility. Their emphasis should be on VOCATIONAL and TECHNICAL skills.

I agree with the Tech school assessment 200%

Crude Oil will not dry up but the buyers may. Palm Oil is an awesome business. Every cosmetic and frozen food in USA uses it and now Malaysia is dominating the market by building massive palm oil plantations. The oil processing plant in Anambra State is making millions a year.

What Adeshina means is $1.3bn in foreign exchange and not revenue. If cocoa exporters pay taxes (either export duties or company taxes) on export value, that would be revenue to the government. The $1.3bn belongs to the exporter and not the FG

and 1.3 billion in 2014..

a miserly 400 Million Naira growth in 3 years?! angry

I hope to see the day Nigeria refines this product into finished goods. That's when we can generate more revenue from it. We need industrialization in the country. What is going on? Why can't the people do something? Why is it hard for Nigeria to develop?
