Mercedes-Benz will take the wraps off the all-new Mercedes-Maybach sedan later this month at the Los Angeles Auto Show, a model that will sit between the S-class and the Pullman in Stuttgart’s brand hierarchy. Codenamed X222, the extra-long wheelbase sedan will mark the return of the Maybach name, this time as a sub-brand akin to Mercedes-AMG, and will feature a thoroughly reworked rear passenger compartment and C-pillar section, along with new rear doors as shown in these renderings.

The Mercedes-Maybach will be one of four sedan variants of the current W222 S-class, alongside long and short-wheelbase versions of the base sedan and the Pullman limousine. The Mercedes-Maybach will be aimed at the Bentley Mulsanne and the Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II, as well as the long- wheelbase version of the Range Rover that debuted a few months ago. The car is expected to be approximately 10 inches longer than the long-wheelbase S-class, which has a wheelbase of 206.5 inches. The Mercedes-Maybach is expected to be powered by the twin-turbocharged V12 producing 523-hp and 612 lb-ft of torque found in the current Mercedes-Benz S600. The sedan is also expected to be offered with a version of the the twin-turbocharged V12 currently found in the S65 AMG producing 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, though it is not clear at this time whether all versions of the upcoming super-sedan will receive 4Matic all-wheel drive. Mercedes’ Magic Body Control will certainly make an appearance in this versions of the S-class, perhaps alongside 4Matic, systems that cannot currently not be ordered together in the short and long-wheelbase S-class sedan just due to space limitations.

In terms of interior layout, the Mercedes-Maybach will closely mirror the former Maybach 62, complete with reclining rear seats and enhanced infotainment features for rear seat passengers. It is not clear at this time whether the Mercedes-Maybach will be offered with a partition and a powered window between the front and rear passengers compartments, something that was an option on the Maybach 62. The Mercedes-Maybach will also offer an increased range of interior materials and options, in addition to some new tech not currently offered in the S-class. Sometime later, Mercedes-Benz is also expected to offer an armored version of the Mercedes-Maybach, though like the standard sedan and Pullman variants, it will not be available in the U.S. The armored version is expected to offer VR9-level ballistic protection, as in the S600 Guard.

The Mercedes-Maybach will mark the return of the Maybach name to the lineup, which existed as a standalone brand from 2002 until 2010. The Maybach 57 and Maybach 62, which made use of the old W140 platform, were originally planned to be badged as Mercedes-Benz Maybachs until relatively late in the development process. Sales turned out to be a bit of a disappoinment for Mercedes-Benz over the eight-year production run. The upcoming Mercedes-Maybach will instead be an extra-long-wheelbase version of the S-class, akin to personal S-class cars built by Belgian coachbuilder Carat Duchatelet in the 1990s that also featured a re-engineered rear passenger section with redesigned rear doors and a luxurious interior.

Details on pricing will be announced after the model’s debut at the LA Auto Show, though the base version of the Mercedes-Maybach is expected to start at around $200,000 in the U.S., with the armored versions for other markets being $100,000 dearer. An even more exclusive version of the W222 S-class — the Pullman limousine — is expected to be unveiled (with relatively little fanfare) a few months later. Developed and built by Brabus, the Pullman limousine will feature an extra middle row of rear-facing conference-style seats in a 2+2+2 layout, and a half-million-dollar starting price for the unarmored version.

Stuttgart has more Maybach versions of existing cars in the works, and the GL-class has been mentioned as another model which may see a Maybach variant in the near future. The Mercedes-Maybach S600 and S65 are expected to be available for ordering in the spring of 2015.

I DON'T think that Daimler AG has gotten the Maybach right this time. Its not always about the numbers, not about the 'look me in the face' hyper hi-tech gizmos, not about the style, not even always about the size, certainly not about all the bells and whistles, No! far from those. Rather, more of the origin and the history and how the latest models refers back or pay a semblance to the beginnings. Its more about the class, the soul, the glory, the sense of fulfillment, the serenity, the laid back cleverly tucked back hi-tech gizmos (bentleys and rolls royce has these elements), its about letting the people know they're gonna be buying a collectors item, an heritage, an institution, a story a beautiful craft, rather than some tool/toy or car. Nothing stops mercedes from going to the UK, Switzerland, or some place known for its victorian era, renaissance era designs and historical fame to open up a dedicated plant. And making every thing about the new maybach from top-down brand new and not a part off the mass produced S-Class. Why don't Daimler AG learn to listen to the yearning of the people?

Nothing stops them from studying trends of luxury buyers, meeting these buyers and asking them what they envisage in a luxury limo, why don't they go to brunei, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar to ask their kings these, why not ask flamboyant CEOs what they need in a hyper luxury sedan.
People have not started seeing its advert yet,
What prevents them from running a 'Watch out! Coming soon adverts'?
Finally, they should stop portraying their uber luxury sedans as limos where the owners are relegated to the rear with all the boring gizmos to play with. They should consider the owners as capable drivers too and hence, advertise their sedans as such.

Maybe until Carlos Lago, John Libberman and Jeremy Clarkson writes them, then they'll understand better.

Well, it's "Uber Luxury" as you said, so it's for those on Forbe's 100 list.
I'm very sure the founding fathers of "The Merc" will be roiling in their graves over what they're doing to "The Best or Nothing!"
This car isn't exclusive, any rapper with loads of cash can get one and chorus "M..M..M..M..Maybach M(complete the rest)!"
They really should learn from Rolls Royce especially, where every car is custom-made to order, so when they see one, people would say, " This car's for so-and-so, the only one in the world."

Maybach Comeback, Round Two: Moniker May Grace Spruced-up GL-class

We’ve known all year that Mercedes would resurrect its failed Maybach superluxury brand into an AMG-like trim for the current S-class. What we didn’t see coming was a Maybach SUV.

The blokes at Motoring report that Mercedes executives have “floated” several models worthy of Maybach treatment, including the full-size GL-class SUV, the S-class coupe, and the MLC coupe SUV that will compete against the BMW X4. Motoring says the models will be restyled and based on each car’s existing chassis with a “by Maybach” designation.

“Of course we see the luxurious [SUV] segment has huge growing potential, and the answer then is why not?” R&grin chief Thomas Weber said to the website. “The question is how fast and how parallel we can go with production for something like this.”

Given Benz’s overflowing success with $140,000 AMG G-wagens (plus the stupid-crazy G65 AMG and G63 AMG 6×6 for the Middle East and Russia), a Maybach-branded SUV could be very profitable. Plus, with $200,000 SUVs from Bentley, Lamborghini, and likely Rolls-Royce arriving in the next few years, the market for exotic four-by-fours is apparently ready and waiting. The new stretched-wheelbase Range Rover that debuted this year is just too lonely. “You will see more in the months to come, and maybe next year will be the year of our SUV offensive,” Weber said.

We’re expecting the first Mercedes Maybach - or S-class by Maybach - to appear at the Paris auto show and go on sale in the middle of 2015. Mercedes is mum on the rest, but if Maybach is to get a new life, it’ll have to branch out.
