The Frenchman says the San Siro side have to be more ruthless ahead of their derby with Inter and has downplayed talk of him having had a falling-out with Filippo Inzaghi

Philippe Mexes says AC Milan must toughen up in order to stay in the race for Champions League qualification, arguing that they have lacked “a bit of steel” in the opening stages of the season.

The San Siro side currently sit seventh in the Serie A table after winning just two of their last nine encounters and Mexes is desperate to return to winning ways against Inter after the international break.

“We need to get as many points as possible. The team has ability to be higher in the table, we need to be closer to the top three,” the Frenchman told Sky Sport Italia.

“We’ve drawn so many times in games we should have won. We need to win to stay up there. We know we are a good team and we can do better, but we just lack a bit of steel.

“The derby will be a good game, but Milan will win if we have the attitude we’ve always had, with desire, determination and a little more ruthlessness.”

Mexes then went on to stress that he doesn’t have any issues with head coach Filippo Inzaghi irrespective of his lack of playing time this season.
