Kanu's past acknowledgment that decisions made by the Supreme Court are legally binding is noteworthy. This acknowledgement reinforces the idea that there are no more justifications for evading accountability.

The trial's outcome will have far-reaching effects. According to a report published by Amnesty International in 2025, more than 1,800 people lost their lives in the Southeast region between the years 2021 and 2023. The International People's Liberation Army (IPOB) and its armed wing, the ESN, have been linked to these deaths. Positive resolution of Kanu's case is crucial. It is the responsibility of the Nigerian judiciary to ensure that a fair trial is conducted in court, to uphold the rule of law, to be resistant to coercion, and to deliver justice to those who have passed away.

The Federal Government has not been able to secure a conviction. Over three years later, the case is still dragging with adjournments and technical arguments. To a lot of observers, e dey look like government no get strong evidence to nail am. Some even argue that Kanu has no real case to answer, and that’s why conviction never come.

The irony here is that every delay seems to play in Kanu’s favour. His supporters point to it as proof that FG is only using politics, not law. Critics of government say if the case truly strong, by now judgment for don land. Instead, it’s back-and-forth, today Terrorism Act don repeal, tomorrow na health issue, next week na international conspiracy.

Meanwhile, the judiciary itself is under pressure. Supreme Court already ruled that the trial should continue, but the longer it drags, the more it dents public confidence. And with Amnesty International reporting over 1,800 deaths in the Southeast between 2021–2023, allegedly linked to IPOB and ESN, many Nigerians are demanding closure and justice.

At this point, some people believe FG should bury face in shame if they can’t prove the charges and simply release him, while others insist the trial must go on to uphold the rule of law.

Either way, justice delayed is justice denied, both for the victims in the Southeast and for Nigeria’s credibility as a country wey claim to follow due process.
