Three major reasons Lagos developed through the influence of non-Yoruba groups:

1. Colonial Administration and Trade

The British made Lagos a colony in 1861, separate from Yoruba-controlled territories.

It became the key port for exports (palm oil, cocoa) and imports, attracting Europeans, Lebanese, Sierra Leoneans, and Brazilians.

Non-Yoruba merchants dominated early commerce, shipping, and banking.



2. Migration and Labor Supply

Its status as Nigeria’s capital (1914–1991) drew Igbo, Hausa, Edo, Nupe, and others.

Non-Yoruba groups filled jobs in administration, construction, and the civil service.

This migration built Lagos into a multi-ethnic city, expanding its economy beyond Yoruba enterprise.



3. Industrialization and Business Networks

Igbo entrepreneurs dominated spare parts, electronics, transport, and construction.

Lebanese and Indian communities invested in retail, textiles, and real estate.

Foreign capital and non-Yoruba business networks made Lagos Nigeria’s commercial hub.

A lazy farmer always use his tools as his excuse for lack of productivity. Imagine if Obi had won presidency Nigeria would have gone bankrupt by now. Workers would have been on strike for unpaid salaries. From his antecedents, doctors went on strike for 13 months when he was Anambra gov. The same would have repeated itself at the National level. You cannot give what you don't have.
