KANO — In what political observers are calling a major blow to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, aggrieved members from Kano have dumped President Bola Tinubu’s party and defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, pledging loyalty to the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

The defection was led by Danlami Zakari Unguwar Gertai, popularly known as Garkuwan Gari of Gari Local Government Area, Kano State, alongside hundreds of his supporters.


The Vice Presidential candidate of the NDC, Sen. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, received the defectors on Sunday at his residence along Miller Road, Kano.

According to the Kwankwasiyya Movement in a statement posted on social media, the delegation “pledged their loyalty and unwavering commitment to the movement and its vision for a better Nigeria.”

Photos from the meeting showed Kwankwaso welcoming the crowd with the signature Kwankwasiyya red cap, as chants of _“Kai, Sai Kwankwaso!”_ filled the compound.


The defectors cited 3 reasons for dumping APC:
1. Internal divisions and court cases tearing the party apart in Kano and nationally

A coalition of Northern women groups is calling on President Bola Tinubu to abandon any plans for a second term in 2027 and instead “retire with his wife to the other room.”
