A Nigerian socialite, Chief Dokun Olumofin, has proposed a $500 tourism tax for Nigerians in the diaspora returning home during the festive “Detty December” period.

Tribune Online reports that Lagos hotels raked in a staggering N54 billion in December 2024, according to a report by advisory firm MO Africa Company Limited.

Suggesting how the government can take advantage of the period to generate revenue, Olumofin, in a formal letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, outlined how the initiative could significantly benefit the nation’s finances.

In the proposal, Olumofin stated that imposing the tax on returning diasporans between November 25 and January 5 could raise as much as $125 million, or approximately N240 billion.

This revenue, according to him, could be channelled into positioning Nigeria as a global destination for festive celebrations.

The letter partly reads, “This letter outlines a significant opportunity for Nigeria to generate considerable revenue-potentially up to $125 million (240 billion Naira approx.)-based on an estimated contribution of $500 from 250,000 projected returnees.


“This revenue could be allocated towards developing tourism, positioning Nigeria as a premier global destination for festive celebrations.”

Many Nigerian businesses are fraudulent. Two of my friends found out when they got to the Airbnb that they booked.... that their agents made multiple bookings.
So they had to stay at mine before they sorted out an alternative.
And guess what, the agents who are Nigerians, switched off their mobile phones.

Caring for the hubby goes beyond all that alone, and we have been thought by you ladies that those things are no longer specific gender roles. We make money, you do too. Don't leave all the bills to your man all in the name of he is the man, while it's both of you who work and earn. Take it like he crashes under the burden and pressure. You go pay the bill tire o. And I know there is nothing else women hates more than paying endless bills, it only comes second to being accountable. So, it's more sensible to support than end up being the "strong woman or hard working woman".

Is so bad that has a married man you can't even buy yourself new wears.

Throughout last year I couldn't get myself a new set of jeans trouser even tho I needed it badly despite having the money.
All the money I made last year 90% when into paying bills and household expenses.
It so crazy how you has a man you will have over 200k in your acc and you be scared to even buy yourself something of 10k cos of fear of the unknown.
In all of this my wife and kids still has many clothes they haven't worn I paid for you.

Last weekend my wife bought herself over 10 new shirt and when I saw it I reminded her how I couldn't even buy myself new jean....she told me nah me no wan buy nah.
It really hurt me cos whatever money I make the family expenses come first before my own personal needs but it isn't same for women.

I just feel marriage is design for men to suffer honestly.
People just taking from you and no one really care about what you need.
