The cases are adjourned to enable the courts consult and ' eat ' as much as possible from the rich persons being tried.

because the rich mamas ask for the adjournment.

the poor guy who is ill-advised, will go there to plead guilty.
what follows next is sentencing by the judge.

if the "poor guy" pleads not guilty and then asks for more time to prepare a defence, the judge would have no choice but to adjourn.
At the next sitting, make a perfunctionary defence and when the persecution makes any statement, ask for more time to respond to that - another adjournment.
if your are lucky, the judge great-grand mama will die a day before the next sitting and as a good traditionalist, the judge cannot come out for three weeks.
...

The problem is if you were not granted bail, and do not have better thing to do on the outside, and do not value freedom in itself, and you hear that prison is a more comfortable place than jail, you may prefer to get it over with and get over to the greener grass of prison itself.
breathless.
