I ran into a short summary of a new TV show being hosted by a young minister in the UK and while reading came across the following excerpt -

The show is hosted by Award winning Youth Diplomat, Europe’s Premier Youth and Young Adult Leader, and British Red Cross Humanitarian Citizen Ambassador – Dayo Israel. With deep experience in the media industry and youth development, Dayo bring a trail blazing approach to TV talk shows through “How with Dayo Israel”

So like the Berean christians did, i chose to compare this blatant expression of self promotion with that of apostle Paul -

Phil 3:4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: 5 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; 6 Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.

7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

I'm no longer sure if a lot of "pastors" are still reading the same epistles that the apostles wrote 2000 years ago, i'm no longer sure what role denying oneself for Christ plays among the body of Christ anymore.
I don't even know what it means to be called a "christian" anymore.

Is it now a social club for the religious pharisees?

Yes, a church as it is being organised currently is a social club. Nigerians have copied the evangelical TV pastors in the US and have modified their tactics to great effect in this country.

People go to church to look for contracts from other members, look for husbands and wives and also to enrich themselves. While these activities may seem harmless, It becomes a worry when that becomes the main focus of the church itself. Pastors now try to outdo one another with wordly possessions, they use the advantage of a failed economy to make church workers focus more on acquiring earthly riches rather than heavenly ones as Jesus told us.

While people like you try to point out this issues, you will continually to be labelled a heretic and an agent of the devil and I am not surprised because these same pastors and their forerunners also faced the same tirade when they pointed out the filth that went on in the 'older' churches. God's word will not be mocked and surely this mode of christianity will FALL and once again christians will look up to Jesus as the author and finisher of their faith and not some well spoken dude in a $3000 suit.

   By their fruit, we have known them. Humility is not fashionable these days David.

The real problem is that we're calling a fallacy the "body of Christ". To me, when by their very actions they contradict the definition of godliness, I feel it not right to ascribe their shortcomings to the entire true body of Christ. The body of Christ, the remnant, is strong, growing, praying, dying to themselves daily and living not for themselves but for Christ. When the Light comes, this kind of darkness will have nowhere to hide.

You know Ow11, shortly after my discoveries at the CE healing school, I started doing a little research on some US televangelists; my findings were quite startling. Most Naija preachers are actually patterning themselves like their US counterparts. They have succeeded in bringing in class & personality worship into Naija churches, 'the money cometh' prosperity scam and many other trash. As long as you are rich, classy and influential, you'll earn respect and recognition in their midst.

Here is what the bible as to say about discriminating between the rich and the poor.

James 2:1-5:
  1 My dear brothers and sisters,[a] how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others?

   2 For example, suppose someone comes into your meeting[b] dressed in fancy clothes and expensive jewelry, and another comes in who is poor and dressed in dirty clothes. 3 If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich person, but you say to the poor one, “You can stand over there, or else sit on the floor”—well, 4 doesn’t this discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil motives?
   5 Listen to me, dear brothers and sisters. Hasn’t God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in faith? Aren’t they the ones who will inherit the Kingdom he promised to those who love him?
