Red Alert On Another Buhari, Jonathan Clash by firstafricanews: 5:37pm On Dec 11, 2014
On October 15, the day former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, declared his intention to run for president in the 2015 election, news website, Sahara Reporters, activated an opinion poll. In it Nigerians were ask about who they prefer to rule them, were elections to hold that day between Buhari (as candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC) and President Goodluck Jonathan (as candidate of the Peoples Democratic, PDP).
The poll lasted for only 24 hours, and out of a total of 15,435 persons that voted, Buhari got 12,246 votes, representing 79 percent of the total votes cast, while President Jonathan got 3189 votes, representing 21 percent of the total votes.
A similar survey by President Jonathan’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Reno Omokri, on his blog, “Build Up Nigeria” posed the question: “If the Nigerian Presidential election were held today, who would you vote for between President Goodluck Jonathan and General Muhammadu Buhari?” The verdict before it was abruptly shut down suggested Buhari had an edge.
But polls are mere academic exercises; the two candidates of the major political parties had met previously.
In the April 16, 2011 presidential election, Jonathan scored 22, 495, 187 or 58% of the popular votes, while Buhari as candidate for the Congress for Political Change (CPC) scored 12,214,853 or 31.98%. But that was when the opposition parties have not coalesced into the behemoth now called APC.
The 2011 general elections were adjudged by many observers as the most credible election organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) since 1999. But not in the hearts of those who disagreed with the outcome.
