Those masquerades actually represent other-worldly entities - extraterrestrials - that used to visit and live with us in ancient antiquity (and likely even had a hand in our creation). They are not just figments of our ancestors' imaginations. Their display at festivals is a commemoration and record of real historical occurrences. 5 Likes |

adahib:What you posted is not ekpe. Ekpe is a society/cult. Okonko is the name of the masquerade you posted, it's a masquerade exclusive to the Ekpe cult group. Both you and the Op are wrong. 1 Like |

That one followers dey carry coffin and sharpened swords in broad day light. There were even times they clashed with Agaba and fought. Then there are some even more deadly ones that come out only at night with strange voice Women shouldnt dare to look |

nedu2000: They are humans in costumes representing spirits and deities which are intangible. They are like living idols of the Gods. When a spirit dancer dons his costume he assumes the role of the spirit. Real ones are supposed to get high and become posesssed by the spirit itself. This is why they dance and drink palm wine, etc. |
