You are not a majority anywhere in Jos. Quit trying to snatch up other ppl's lands. If you are natives of Jos the I guess its time for Igbos, Yorubas, who also have been there for a long time to claim ownership. abi

The more u push it the more resistance you will get from the Beroms and other natives sick of the encroachment. One day una go begin dey claim Awka town na ur native land. smiley

@ Dranoel

No one is claiming ownership over anything here. Its simply a matter of using your mandates as enshrined in the Constitution of The Federal Republic of Nigeria to determine who your leaders would be. Thats why its beauty lies in the ability of the overwhelming majority to always have their way under an ideal situaution. This is basic knowledge which anyone not even 'educated' but sane should know. Mind you the issue of settler and indigent is but dellusional as every acclaimed indigent was at an initial onset a settler. Its only used as a basis for discrimination among the citizenry of nations. If a particular ethnic group is able to overwhelmingly populate a Local govt area or ward as the case may be & they unify in their decision on the choice of a contestant, its only normal & just for them to have their way just as the Igbos have from time in memorial have and still occupy the coucillorship seat in Sabon gari wards of Fagge Local Govt. Area of Kano State. Would it then be just and rational for the so call indigents to eliminate the so called settlers at all cost just to emaciate their population & secure the seats? I don't know what type of mindset you have got but I hope you aren't thinking along the lines of Udezue & Quota because that will be suicidal.

.

A clear instance of misguided and non-substantial statement. Then, which is the objective judge since you are now privileged to be a caucus member of the media regulatory agency.

For saying this, I would ask for your sense of history, if you have none ask your father or someone who has lived the unrest of the 1960s. Gen. Ironsi was actually killed among other reason for advocating what you're advocating today more than 40 years ago. Of course we all know that the ideal situation would have been every Nigerian becoming citizens of any particular state after settling there for sometime(just like in the US). However, that idea was killed, because it was target at stopping Igbos from "spreading like weed all over the country" So, why do you want change the law now just to favor the Hausas?

You mentioned Sabon Gari areas of Kano and other northern states. Sabon gari means district for visitors. It also means that some Nigerians could live in a state like Kano for 100 years without being given full and unfettered access to all parts of the city. If Jos has Sabon Gari, Hausa-Fulani settlers ought to be living there, and would have had no right to try to colonize the idigenes in their own land. Visitors are crowded into these visitors districts with limited access to political power, just like the concentration camps.

Have you ever heard of district for visitors in Enugu, Calabar or Benin, or infact any developed metropolois?

The report according to Guardian------ I believe it more than Daily Trust

Territorial Ambition, Not Election Caused Jos Crisis, Says Plateau Forum
From Onyekachi Agbedo (Lagos) and Isa Abdulsalami (Jos)

A FRESH vista into the recent crisis in Jos was at the weekend opened as the Birom Parliamentary Forum said the mayhem had nothing to do with the November 27 2008 council polls but a plot by the Hausa/Fulani to control Jos North Council.

In a petition to the Senate ad hoc Committee investigating the causes of the crisis, the forum, comprising four councils in the state and core indigenes of the Plateau (Jos North, Jos South, Barom Ladi and Riyom) said the mayhem had nothing to do with polls.

It decried the reports that linked the mayhem to the council poll, saying they appeared to lack reliable information on the root of the crisis. The group traced the genesis of the crisis to the ancient method of alleged attempts to stifle Christian missionary activities in Northern Nigeria, noting that it "manifested and reared its ugly tri-headed monster in Jos, all in the name of council elections."

It alleged that the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) painted a lopsided Moslem picture of events through the Imam of the ciy's main mosque, Sheik Khalid Abubakar and the police spokesman, Bala Kasim, who painted the picture that the crisis was exaggerated

Citing scholarly litratures like A New Geography Of West Africa, new Revised Edition by N.P Iloeje; the 19th Century Encyclopaedia Britannica, Volume 3 and 'My Life' by Sir Ahmadu Bello, the group noted that the Biroms had successfully defended themselves against the Moslem Hausa/Fulani slave raiders throughout the 19th century.

It, therefore, faulted claims by some Hausa writers that Jos was ruled from 1909 by Hausa chiefs, describing it as a "product of demented brains that attempt to derail history."

"Before the coming of the Whiteman, the Biroms had had Gbong Gwom Birom. These paramount rulers ruled for thousands of years before a Hausa/Fulani set foot on the Plateau," the forum.

It listed several instances of Hausa/Fulani killings and destruction of property in the state from 2001 till date and concluded that the latest crisis was not due to the polls.

Meanwhile, the President-General of Yoruba Community in Jos, Chief Toye Ogunsuyi, has blamed the Jos crisis on the porous security network. Ogunsuyi was reacting to the crisis saying that it was pre-planned as the election results were still being collated when the crisis broke out. He said he could not bring himself to understand the reason for the riot if it were not pre-planned.

"If it was not pre-planned, the amount of sophisticated weapons, the amount of people wearing fake police uniforms would not have arisen. The 2001 crisis in Jos was spontaneous but this one was properly planned and hatched.

In a related development, Jang has called for a constitution review to give governors powers to command the military and the police to effect orders during crisis.

Jang had also frowned at the situation where governors would have to apply to the presidency to commit troops to quell crisis describing it as very unfortunate. He said such orders usually took longer time before approval was granted when the crisis must have consumed a lot.

The governor also said that the North at this point in time should rise above religious or political sentiments.

He stated this when the delegation of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) paid him a solidarity visit at Government House, Rayfield Jos. The delegation was at Government House to commiserate with the government and the people of the state over Jos crisis.
