Nairaland started with SMF script and later customized it to what you see today by paying web developers and not free like the one you are looking for. Pay money and you will get what you want.

Weda it was customized or not its core is smf.
Nairaland is smf they only customized a theme to suite seuns taste.

You are correct nairaland started with smf but observed they did more work on the SEO cause SMF I know is not that
friendly to the search engine as nairaland is.

Yes they are seo Mods for most boards like phpbb vbulletin so adding Mods and tweaking style(Html n css) doenst mean its no more smf large part of it is still unchanged smf code

Ok ok, so which of SMF and phpBB do you(with some tweaking) think will be better in terms of seo?

Id recommend phpbb because I am using it but Mods are Mods it doesnt mean if you use vbulletin or smf your seo will be bad they have little effect since most forums are easy to crawled by google,
I think the url part can help humans type links easily but these mods dont fool google hey but go for phpbb anyway its popular lots of support n cool mods and styles

Yes ofcourse you can just like nairaland even these days you can start it but you will get your traffic elsewhere

Simple Machine Forum

I doubt whether Nairaland is running on SMF. But for those who want to start a forum, i will advise you to use Xenforo Forum software.
Xenforo is the leading forum software at the moment.

The source code is now available. I have seen it being used on a Kenyan Forum [url]kenyanlist.org[/url]
Although it is still raw. Am not sure of the copyright issues
