That's the problem....the law here assumes you took part in the crime even if you did not know.

That is why when buying things.....make sure of their point of origin. Especially second hand things.

Funny enough...the law is different in other countries in Africa. A friend of my dad's once had his car stolen. The police caught the thieves...but the car had been sold to a buyer in Chad. When they tried to get the car back...they found out that Chadian law states that the buyer of stolen goods cannot be held liable for the crime...and can keep the thing since he did not know. If only it had stayed in Nigeria......

Hope your friend is ok?

That is the problem;
-We are not saying suspects should not be apprehended. But do not torture people unneccesarily. In very sane countries, they know better.
-That is how they keep wasting energy on petty cases while some of them fumble when they meet the real criminals

There is no such thing as necessary torture..

The Nigerian police are too lazy to use conventional investigating techniques, so they resort to torture. That is why they rarely ever get convictions against criminals.

Pray to your heavenly God not to get caught by SARS. Those ones would torture you, get the confessions they require and summarily execute you without trial..

This is the reality of the Nigerian Police as it operates in Nigeria Today..

lalasticlala:
The police on Thursday arraigned Ejeh Smith, one of the tortured couple, before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court for allegedly receiving stolen goods.

He was arraigned along with two others, Mattias Manda and Adamu Iliasu, on three counts of conspiracy, stealing and receiving stolen goods.

The magistrate, A.T. Omoleye, granted them bail in the sum of N50,000 each with two sureties in like sum.

PUNCH Metro had reported that Ejeh and his wife, Grace, were tortured by a policeman, Dada Ogunsanya, while they were going home.

After the report, a Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, had filed a N100m case against the police on behalf of the couple for the injustice suffered in the hand of the police corporal and the then Ikoyi Divisional Police Officer, Aisha Haruna.

Our correspondent reported on Thursday that the police at the end of investigation, released the cop after demoting him from a corporal to a constable, and arrested Ejeh for allegedly receiving stolen diesel.

The diesel was said to have been given to him by a security man, who stole it from his boss.

It was reported that Ejeh was arrested by policemen from the Lion Building Division and was granted bail before policemen from the Ikoyi Police Division took over the case.

The matter was subsequently taken to court on Thursday.

The charges read in part, “That you, Mattias Manda, Adamu Iliasu and Ejeh Smith, on February 8, 2015, at about 9am, at Ajayi Benbe Street, Parkview Estate Ikoyi, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit; stealing, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.”

They pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Their defence counsel, Ben Ogbu, applied for their bail in liberal terms.

The magistrate, Omoleye, then admitted them to bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

However, a lawyer from the Femi Falana Chamber, who was representing the couple in the torture case, Mr. Austin Audu, told PUNCH Metro that the N100m suit against the police would still go on.

He said, “Despite the new development, we are still going ahead with the torture case which is already before the court and has been assigned a case number.

“We are only waiting for a date to be assigned for the hearing.

“However, I must say that something is really fishy here. Why is it now that the police are bringing up this case against him? I think something is wrong somewhere.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, told our correspondent the police did not frame Ejeh, adding that they were doing their job.

He said, “There were three of them involved in the case; do we say because he has a matter with us, he should not be arrested if he commits an offence?”

below is a graphic pic of tortured Ejeh

No policeman has the right to lay a finger on any person except in self defense.
The standard procedure is to read him his rights and place him under arrest not to torture him.
I pray that some day soon, our people would begin to know their rights and help curb the excesses of some of our policemen

The Police are Lying.. I have heard of occasions where the police will simply drive by Night Clubs and if you happen to be outside taking a breather or whatever reason, they grab you and shove you into their VAN, if you cannot pay on the spot, they lock you up in a cell and charge you to court for soliciting sex from a prostitute. N30k - N50k bail. If you happen to be near the scene of a crime or even taking pictures of a fight or robbery. you will be arrested (since they cannot arrest robbers) and charged as a robbery suspect. if you cannot pay bail money, you will end up in Kirikiri.. SARS Ikeja is obsessed with extortion and summary executions and torture.. there is a popular culprit named Gadaffi and Mr. John - Gadaffi was one of the occupants of the car used to assasinate Kudirat Abiola.

Be very careful around Policemen at Night, especially near these illegal check-points - Masha (Under-bridge), Opposite Teslim Balogun Stadium, Adeniji 3rd Mainland Drop. just before Ojuelegba bridge (Forte Oil)

They will frame you up or kill you then frame you up

Okuzu SARS in Anambra State is the worst. It needs total overhauling. They will kill you in front of your people after they've collected money for the bail.
Most times they do beat up the lawyers that even summon courage to come there and threatening to lock them up sef. Suing them to Court is a waste of time cos they claim to be above the law.
please the federal government should do something about it.

Why wait when we can start a campaign online, a campaign that'll involve people, victims, those who have a story to tell and we can show the world how badly Nigerians are being oppressed by gun totting touts calling themselves police or sars?
