Hi everyone

My challenge is that d boy is having none of it, he only knows how to ask questions, he doesn't like to read when the teacher comes he will be sleeping giving her a hard time, I try as much as I can not compare them but this boy is giving me hard time. its a catholic school and sister said if he continue that way they might expel him that i should make him learn from my daughter.
Please parents in the house how can I make him serious and quite his sleeping habit he is even growing very fat because of too much sleep. I feel good when collecting present for my daughter as d best I want the same for my boy.

Exactly!
I have a son that just got into the Uni to study. That boy never opened his books up to an hour. The one in the first class at 6 was spending more time than him learning when he was doing his A level. It drove me up the wall .

The boy calculated that he needed a 1,8 in his A level to get into any university of his choice to study what he wanted and that was exactly what he brought home angry angry
We used to think he was kind of slow. He wold ask so many questions but could not do up his shoe lace. Could not draw anything. Common sense was lacking as a child.
The only day ever came home crying and could not do his homework was in primary one when they told him to draw his family.

Then I have those that read allot and get good results. Read and don`T get good results.

Every child is different and has to be supported and encouraged.

If the school don`t want him put him in another school.

Sometimes people just do not fit in. Even adults may have a job and just not fit into the team. It happens.

The olodo teacher is pissed the boy wouldn't just cram what she instructed him to cram and probably couldn't answer his questions.

If you're smart yourself, you can always find out whose fault it is by cunningly testing the teacher and whatever question your son asks make sure you give him an answer. If you don't know the answer, point him in the right direction to find out himself and introduce him to puzzles too...

Firstly, I will like to say children are different and our schools expect these children to learn the same thing the same way which is wrong. I teach in a full montessori school (some schools thay call themselves montessori are not) and one of our core beliefs is that no two children want to learn the same thing at the same time. So we dont teach them the same subject at a time, each child does different work at at time.

My first suggestion is to evaluate the school, it might be the best for your daughter and not the best for him.
Secondly, for children in my school who are like this, we usually advise the parents to get them evaluated. Your child may have a Learning difficulty or may have a learning difference such as Dyslexia, ADHD etc and the earlier you know the better because it helps you know how to help the child.
This will be my strong recommendation,to get him evaluated.

A lot of parents deny the fact that their child may have a learning difficulty that they manage the child till the child grows and then it is too late to help the child, now that the child is still young, pls get him evaluated and help him from there

Never compare children,no children is ever the same..try to study what interest him,and try to use that to get him to read,or study...

You can use a little compensation,or a promise of gift to get him to read..with that, his interest for book can be ignited.

U are right o, sometimes his questions scare the hell out of me, one day we where watching TV, current affair then they ask what year did police change their uniform, his question was what where they wearing before, in mind I was like what kind of question is that even me don't know d answer. His questions really used to surprise me sometimes o n don't even bother telling him anything if u are not ready to answer questions.

Thanks all for ur advice. I will do as advised and I pray for improvement. Amen.

I agree with you!

I believe I had something close to an attention disorder which greatly impeded my ability to focus in class.

It wasn't discovered early enough sadly and I had to go through the whole route of the learning process in my late teens.

The experience wasn't funny at all. The ability of parents and teachers to detect this and other impedements to 'learning' in children early can truly go a long way.

That's a specialised field. Start at a good hospital: speak to a pediatrician and tell him/her you would like a recommendation for a Child pyschologist. Trya teaching hospital as they have more contacts and would know about these things better. I think there's a group for children with learning disabilities (may have heard a friend mention it some years ago) but you have to look for them. HTH

Hey let me frank I love smart kids. But your boy is just being lazy forget about that dude up there saying he is a great thinker that is crap. From your explanation your boy is a bit pampered. Asking questions he is just being NOSY and that is no sign of intelligence. I have seen real smart people they have a thing in common "They talk less".Studying is a habit. For kids rate of assimilation is genetic inclined. If you are pretty smart your boy is gonna be smart too but if you indulge him too much he gets lazy and some other frivolous things may get his attention and the end might not be too good. I don't believe in those montesorri crap. Get your son to study cut the indulgence be strict about it

That is a lie. A child intelligence is controlled by two factors: Gene and Environment. You talk montesorri and I laugh. Though cool but it's just not my ideal thing. My sister's sons attended a montesorri school all through(grange) she paid large sums for tuition. Yes the boys were smart that was simply because she ensured they study all the time. My Cousin kids that attended FGC odogbolu whipped their assess any day any time (Even in SAT)...My point is ensure the kids study often. Be strict about it and you gonna get a genius.....how many geniuses were montesorri bred?

Says who? Is that how you breed great thinkers? The kid in question is just being NOSy. Get him to study that is what he needs now.

Firstly, Grange is not a montessori school like I said, so many people in Nigeria use the montessori name and its just marketing purposes. Secondly, there is No montessori secondary school in nigeria, I think there is one in South Africa not sure though and there are very few montessori secondary schools in the world as a matter of fact, the school where I work is the first to have full montessori for children between the ages of 6-12. The mosy common one is for ages 3-6 years.
And the Op is talking about a younger child. And lastly, you have absolutely NO idea what montessori education is. Have a nice day

I know. Yes Grange is not a montesorri school but grange curriculum is flexible to fit in montesorri breed. Most montesorri schools are for children my nephews attended the one in GRA...can remember the name now and it was pure montesorri. The teachers are called directress. Curriculum is based on 5 structures.. language, arts mathematics etc. Kids are taught how to pour measure build and so on. You don't force a kid to do anything. You don't beat them. They call their teachers by their first name. So many crap like that I have a thorough understanding about montesorri education. They have this perception of building a perfect child...they don't even accept children above 6yrs. If you go to grange almost all the students went to montesorri schools. There are montesorri schools in lagos. (for the records)...Montesorri is someone's idea. An Italian woman I guess (feel free to correct). Most american schools don't run this curriculum and the 19th and 20th century geniuses don't have a montesorri foundation. Anway...I have typed too much...
Re: How Can I Make My Son Study Like His Siblings by baby124: 10:58pm On Mar 02, 2016
Try to understand how best your kid learns. For instance, I learn by summary, pictures and direct text. That is why the invention of printed picture slides in Uni is probably the greatest invention for people like me. I do not, and cannot open a text book. I would sleep. The teacher whom you are paying so much must work closely with your son to ensure he is carried along. You also do your bit by teaching him how to summarize and create pictorial descriptions. No teacher should dare expel your child as that would show laziness on the teacher's part. Threaten them with lawsuit if they dare do such.

This topic is not about which school is best...montessori or not, I only advised the Op about his child having learning difficulty and from experience montessori schools help children with learning difficulty because of how education is structured. Like I said in the first post, this present school may be the best for his daughter but maybe not for his and he should get the son evaluated.

Now to your question, pls show me a genius who thrived under a 'traditional' school facing the blackboard all day and doing assignments without bearing or by passing WASSCE etc., most genius of our time either drop out of college or something, our schools don't teach us to be innovative else we won't be in this state of importing toothpick in Nigeria.

I will give you a list of he few geniuses I know that went to a montessori school, Google brothers Larry Page and Sergey Brin, William Bright, Amazon creator Jeffrey Bezos, Wikipedia creator Jimmy Wales, Gabriel Gracia Marquez, Owner of Washington Post Katherine Graham, Anne Frank, Beyonce, P.Diddy, Joshua Bell, Peter Ducker, Anne Hathaway, George Clooney, Julia Child.....these a few.

No one has talked about the sleeping aspect. How does op stop the child from sleeping too much?
Re: How Can I Make My Son Study Like His Siblings by Amplitron: 11:37am On Mar 05, 2016
@OP,
You will have to invest more of your personal time in learning what motivates the boy. For some children the promise of an extra piece of meat can do wonders while for some it is allowing them to watch cartoon network 4 hours non stop. I hop you get the picture.

Once, you get to know what motivates your boy you can promise more of it if he will study more (set specific objectives e.g if you finish your homework before 6pm you can have the TV remote and decide what channel you want us all to watch for 2 hours).

***Warning***
Make sure you keep your promise and make the reward come quickly for start.
