Pls, fellow Nairalanders, I need your advice.
I graduated with a very weak 2:1 in English and Literature this year. I am having the feeling that my chances of landing a good job is very slim because of the course I studied coupled with the fact that age is against me. I'm approaching 29 and by the time I complete youth service I will be approaching 30.
I feel like reducing my age and starting all over again by studying a management science course but I fear there might be repercussion. What do you advice me to do?

Age is just a number
Re: I'm Caught In A Career Dilemma And Don't Know What To Do by Nobody: 8:03am On Mar 09, 2015
Do masters in something else.

And which one is very weak 2:1. I think 2:1 is a pretty good cgpa whether it's on the 4.4 side or 3.5 side.

Thanks for your comments.
You mean my age will not be a problem if I go for a masters say MBA?

Reducing ur age? Criminal offence
Re: I'm Caught In A Career Dilemma And Don't Know What To Do by demmix(m): 11:22am On Mar 09, 2015
Learn new skills that will give you an edge! Reducing your age will complicate issues for you later on.

And it appears you have a low sense of worth - you have a 2.1, yet you already see it as a weak one. True, your chances are slim but that doesn't rule out luck. Be optimistic!

I appreciate your comments guys. Thanks a lot.

The problem is that when I tell people that I am studying English, they usually give me the impression that it is useless. Again, many employers including some government agencies usually place age restriction on entry level jobs. Something like 'you must be under 26 to be eligible to apply'. I mean, all these make me to fear what the future holds.

Please don't reduce your age. It is an integrity issue.

You need to ask yourself: which area do you think you can work or function well in the corporate world?

When this is settled, assess yourself- your present skills and technical competencies. Then, assess the skills and technical competencies that will be needed in the new role or future role.

Then, strategise on how to fill the gap- the gap between where you are and where you want to be.

It might involve taking few exams, undergoing trainings, investing in your self development. Also look for mentors that are well grounded in the area you choose and establish contact with them. Linkedin might help you in achieving this.

I wish you the best in whatever you choose to do.

Age is not a barrier...except you take it as one. There are many companies that do not have age limit on recruitment. All the companies I have ever worked in do not have... and I know so many others. Spread your tentacles, and go for your goal. The course you studied is not also a barrier. I studied Zoology and I am now a certified HR professional.

Thank you for removing this needle from my butt.
That's exactly what I will do. I will like to consider a career in investment management or human resources. What would you advice me do in order to upgrade?
Thanks in advance.

Please, don't do Masters first. Do it after you are through with your professional exams or concurrently if you can. Professional courses rate higher than Masters qualification.

@Nwogeh and hcdpartners
I appreciate your advice. But what master's degree are you suggesting. MBA seems to be the only option open to me.

Imons, MBA is fine. At your final year, you will get to specialise: Finance, Marketing or HR

I don't know if I will be good in lecturing and again, lecturers always complain of low pay. A lot of them seem to me like an unhappy people. I feel they have so much to do and don't have time for themselves. Really, some look so unkept and unappealing. I think it sound great and honourable to be addressed as a professor but I wouldn't want to suffer such fate.

Try n search 4 hw much lecturers earn..... graduate assistant earns more dan 100k per month, nw tink of wat u'll earn as senior lecturer..some profs earn up to a million per month....gv lecturing a tot if u av d potential n mind u no job is easy as long as it's money making.....money no go sweet if owu no dey
Re: I'm Caught In A Career Dilemma And Don't Know What To Do by Nwogeh: 9:21am On Mar 11, 2015
No lecturer or prof (CONNUAS 01 to 07) earns up to a million per month, two except thay sell textbooks, do adjunt services, or collect "sorting" (sorting dey eida do or face cultists), they cant be great millionnaires compared to their counterpart dt have put d same effort in other big organs.....infact dis is why i want to go into lecturing @50yrs n above wen i might have made my dough cos its my hubby to teach....but 4wealth sake, i cant give in 20yrs in service n still look unhealthy(financially) like most of my lecturers.....with 5yrs experience in auditing, taxation or financial services u can join comapanies that can pay u above 500k easily.....it is just d ground dt is crowded, bt d top is free and d higher u go, d easier it becomes to succeed wella.

In all, make sure u r not idle, get possitively busy wt any relevant career experience no mata d pay 4now
