Lagos Police PRO, Ngozi Braide
Four persons, including a yet-to-be identified soldier, have been killed in a robbery attack
on Skye Bank branch at Alaba Market, Lagos State.
The incident, which took place last Tuesday, was said to have occurred around 6pm,
while money was being transferred from the branch, which serves as a cash point, to a
major branch in the area.
An eyewitness told PUNCH Metro, on the condition of anonymity, that the robbers
arrived at the scene on a motorcycle.
He said, “There were two men on the bike and they both wore masks. The motorcycle
rider, however did not wear mask.
“As of the time the robbers came, money was being moved from the cash point to the
other branch. The money was packed in a Ghana-must-go bag. A soldier was waiting to
accompany the person that would carry the bags as was the custom.
“The employee of the bank carried the bag on his head; the soldier was with him. They
had not gone far when the robbers arrived on their motorcycle.”
The robbers allegedly shot at the soldier and the Skye bank employee; both men were
said to have died on the spot.
After seizing the bag, the robbers allegedly fired more shots sporadically. In the ensuing
panic, a recharge card seller and another person were hit.
“The recharge card seller had already run for cover, but she ran back to her table to
collect her cards. She was hit by a stray bullet while running to her hiding place.
“We later learned that she died while being rushed to the hospital. Another man, who
was also hit by a stray bullet, died on the spot. Several more persons were injured too,”
the source said.
The robbers allegedly escaped with the bag, containing an undisclosed sum of money.
When the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ngozi Braide was contacted,
she said, I will get back to you.”
There was no response from the bank’s spokesperson, Mr. Rasheed Bolarinwa, as he
neither picked the calls made to his telephone nor replied to our correspondent’s text
massage.

I'm with fash on this, though armed robberies are not unheard of in Lagos, they likely took advantage of the security shortage due to the presidents visit. The security of the masses should not be neglected for one man. Especially since state governments fund them.

2000plus police men for GEJ, then how many military men were deployed too? How many other security outfits were deployed too? May be the total number of security men realeased that day for GEJ visit was more that 5000. Even if na GEJ visit to Maduguri. Did any one in lagos that day see these police men with GEJ? I can imagine 2000plus police men following one man. I can't even imagine the slow traffic they would cause. Or may be they where deployed to man the check points, then where they not deployed to man Lekki check points too? Tell me, was Fashola's security police men withdrawn too. Was Tinubu, Ambode and all the APC top shots without their own police men on that day?

Please Fashola, I'm really disappointed. I know that those robbers that day took much/enough time in their operations for any concerned authority to have done something. And I'm sure if Nairaland could get the infor as the robbery lasted, you also could had gotten it. What exactly did you do? 5 man robbery gang can be taken down by 5 man police men, or 5 man soldiers, or 5 man civil defence men(they use AK47 these days) or even 5 man any other security outfit including the navy. With an authority like Fashola and a sound establishment of a little emergency security protocol, the state govt could had responded with any other security outfit outside the police, that's if we agree that they could not make do with the police. I don't want to imagine that things could had gone the way it did if it had been fashola's family house or the state govt house that those 5 guys attacked that day. Well, its all right. Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola has revealed that 2,123 policemen provided security for President Goodluck Jonathan while armed robbers raided a bank in Lekki, Lagos last week.

Fashola, who spoke at the Agricultural Food Value Chain held in Agege area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Tuesday said when the president came to Lagos last Thursday, while citizens were being robbed, the president was protected by 2, 123 security personnel.

“Let me be very clear, the president is entitled to every protection, he’s our president, but the question to ask is that; when you were being traumatised yesterday, where were these 2,123 men? Because you are also entitled to be protected. The reason why the president gets all that protection is so that he can protect all of us,” he said.

The governor also decried Monday’s protest march for Jonathan in Lagos by members of the Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC and other pro-Jonathan groups in which the protesters terrorised Lagosians while brandishing dangerous weapons.

“Yesterday, they also showed the difference between us when the supporters of the PDP and President Jonathan came out. You know on 7th of March this year, just about a week ago, the APC held a solidarity rally in Lagos. Did anybody attack you on that day? So, yesterday, they held their own, but what I heard, because I received telephone calls and text messages from residents who explained to me, I received emails.

“I am sorry for the pain and trauma they put you through because residents continuously complained yesterday that they were traumatised by those people who supposedly were carrying out a rally in support of the president and in support of their gubernatorial candidate, just kidding.

“So instead of canvassing for your votes and showing you why their service record is better, they were showing you knives, cutlass and dangerous weapons. Some residents phoned to say that they were banging on their cars. Let me remind all of us, that the work of a party and a government is to protect citizens and not to terrorize them,” he stated.

Fashola said for those who still said that they did not know what the issues in these elections were, Monday’s event brought one issue sharply in focus, which he said was the issue of security.

He stated that the peace and safety that “all of you have enjoyed for eight years is now at risk. You have seen the kind of people who support the other party on Monday, you have seen the kind of people who support their presidential and gubernatorial candidate, those are the people that you will see around them. Monday’s experience, may God forbid it, would be what you would experience till 2019.

“Unless you come out massively on March 28 and on April 11, that is the only way that God would forbid that kind of thing from continuing in Lagos. It is your vote that would change it. A vote for General Buhari would put to end this kind of abuse of state power. A vote for Ambode will continue the security that we have built and protected you for the past eight years.

Mr. President has gone to many states and as such, lagos shouldnt be giving excuse for its ineffectiveness.

It was a sad incident but as always, APC can only polticize it and shift blames.

Its really sad. What saddens me more are those that buy into such cheap talk. That kinda statement alone can lead to voilence and such should be prosecuted at the ICC.

I think PDP should do the needful.

The problem is Lagos state governor failed to tell people that he gets Monthly Allowance for security of the state very open .. Him blaming GEJ is just so daft.. he should be asked how much is his security Votes for each month? Dont mind this politicians... GEJ is the President of Nigeria .. Lagos state has the highest number of police force in Nigeria over 30,000 police officer in that state alone. So 2,000 subtract out of 30,000 is not a big deal compare to Lagos state land mass. though there may laps in their there place of work.
