The United States has stated that the $308m Abacha loot which will soon be repatriated to Nigeria must be placed in an account and if the money is stolen from that account, Nigeria would be made to replace it.

The Spokesperson for the US State Department, Morgan Ortagus, said in a statement that this was one of the agreements that was made between the US, Nigeria and the Island of Jersey where the funds are being kept.

The statement read in part, “The funds will be used by the Nigerian Independent Sovereign Authority for three infrastructure projects in strategic economic zones across Nigeria.

“To ensure that the funds are used responsibly and for the good of the nation, the agreement includes mechanisms for monitoring the implementation of these projects as well as external oversight, and it requires Nigeria to repay any funds lost as a result of any new corruption or fraud to the account established to hold the returned assets.

“This return reflects the growing international consensus that countries must work together to ensure stolen assets are returned in a transparent and accountable manner.”

The US said the arrangement was consistent with the commitments both the US and Nigeria made under the principles agreed to at the 2017 Global Forum on Asset Recovery co-hosted by the US and the United Kingdom.

“This agreement is a symbol of the weight that the United States government places on the fight against corruption. We welcome President Buhari’s personal commitment to that fight, and we will continue to support civil society and other Nigerian efforts to combat corruption at all levels. The fight against corruption is an investment in the future of Nigeria,” the statement read.

Gen. Sani Abacha, who ruled Nigeria with an iron fist between 1993 and 1998, is believed to have diverted over $4bn from the nation’s treasury.

However, there have been rumours that the funds have not been properly managed by successive governments.

Its very shameful that another country will bring such conditions before repatriating our own money, it shows they don't trust the dullard's claim on fighting corruption.

Buhari has made mockery of this country before the international community.

It's certain part of the money will definitely be embezzled by politicians and civil servants via inflated contracts.

But for the sovereignty of Nigeria it would have been better the US government handle the three infrastructural projects cos our politicians will find a way around it to benefits themselves.

I can bet some are already popping champagne over this decision by the U.S.

Useless, heartless and greedy are the majority of leaders we've got in this country.

Shame on Nigeria. I wonder what makes most of them proud of the shithole to the extent of mocking God with their usual god bless nigeria nonsense.

USA already knows the money will be stolen. Even biggar amounts have simply vanished into thin air under Buhari. Where is the $1 billion re-equip the army to defeat Boko Haram?

This money will also disappear. Nigerians won't even know when it's paid into Buhari's "pederation" account.

Really?

So what should we call Abacha that looted the funds? And hope you are aware Buhari told Nigerians that Abacha never stole but same man is the one repatriating loots stashed across the globe by the late dark-goggled general.

Buhari has seen it all in public service. He was a minister, governor, GOC, head of state, PTF chairman and Two term civilian President. If he's a thief and he stole public monies in his over forty years as public servant, how come even a local government chairman is richer than him? Where are his mansions, private jets, oil Wells, expensive cars, companies, shares that almost all ex Nigerian presidents and other politicians have

This US govt don’t know the type of bigoted and crafty crooks they’re dealing with! It’s very easy to claim the money has been sunk into those three projects and they’ll go behind their backs and use it for something else....or pump most of it into one or two regions while giving a pittance to the third!

Anytime they want to talk of projects in the south-east, it’s always second Niger bridge...second Niger bridge! That’s their ‘get-out-of-jail’ card when asked what they’re doing in the south-east! Very easy to claim billions upon billions is being spent on this bridge...money from SWF...money from Abacha loot....money GEJ admin’ paid as gov’t counterpart funds....all into second Niger bridge that will be tolled by Julius Berger!

Answer this simple question for me
In which court of law was Abacha tried and convicted of looting?
