Immediately after securing the presidential seat, the All Progressives Congress (APC) lost 21 chairmen
Information reaching us from Nigerian Pilot claims that the Akwa Ibom state chapter of the APC on Tuesday witnessed the defection of 21 chairmen to the Labour Party (LP).
The chairmen were led by Hon. Joseph Akpan who appenrently was their leader, made known their support for the LP’s governorship candidate, Senator Helen Esuene, at a concise ceremony in Eket area of the state.
Akpan claimed that they decided to decamp to the LP because of the injustice and impunity going on in the APC.
He said the defectors stood for equity and justice which they would easily find in LP and the laudable programmes and activities of Senator Esuene.
According to him, the defectors promised their loyalty to Esuene, because out of the four governorship candidates, she is the only one that stands out clean, honest and determined to move Akwa Ibom state forward.
“We enjoin the people of Akwa Ibom to turn out en masse and vote for Senator Helen Esuene. She stands for peace and justice and we are certain she will create massive employment through her industrialisation programme,” Akpan said.
Esuene, who received the defectors, promised to to carry them along in the scheme of things.
The LP governorship candidate also promised equitable distribution of resources to the people as well as ensuring that wealth is not concentrated in the hands of a few to the detriment of the masses that need it most.
She, however, denied rumours that she had surrendered her party structure to the APC.
“How can I surrender my structure when APC members are decamping to Labour Party. I am touring the nooks and crannies to campaign. I just finished my rally on Monday and one is talking of surrendering structure. This is not just a figment of their imagination, it does not even exist and it is cheap propaganda,” Esuene said.
Meanwhile,the All Progressive Congress presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, was declared the winner of March 28 presidential elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Accordding to INEC Buhari pulled a total of 15,424,921 votes, or 53.95%, out of the 28,587,564 total valid ballots cast.
Buhari has contested the presidential election on three occasions but failed. He contested against General Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003, the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2007, and Goodluck Jonathan in 2011, before finally securing victory on March 28, 2015.
The people’s general will be sworn in on May 29, which is Nigeria’s democracy day.
