ISWAP supply route. Any Soldier serving there should never put his rifle on safety. The Absence of Soldiers for over 8 months gave ISWAP so much freedom to move along that Magumeri-Gudzamala-Kukawa Lake Chad areas.

Now the military are back ISWAP is finding it so hard to readjust. That place will Continually be a battleground day in and day out.

Kudos Gallant Soldiers

Super camp 12 is even located in the town.

The tucanos will increase the air force's offensive capacity and together with the life extension progammes of the other out-of-operation aircrafts, if properly utilized can greatly degrade BH/ISWAP offensive capability.
In fact I am already seeing a strategy associated with the recent procurement for the airforce.
Use drones and reconnaissance aircrafts to scout for BH/ISWAP targets, use the drones to take out high value targets, then use the other aircrafts to take out other BH/ISWAP targets.

But still, this will mean nothing without an army offensive. The airforce can only be used to soften BH/ISWAP to some extent. It will never defeat them.

Exactly my point.

The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has recommended the recruitment of foreign mercenaries by the federal government to help in ending the Boko Haram war.

The previous Goodluck Jonathan administration utilised foreign mercenaries, including South Africans, against Boko Haram; mainly in the build-up to the 2015 general elections. The mercenaries are believed to have contributed to the successes the military recorded in the few weeks leading to the 2015 general election. The Buhari administration, however, jettisoned the use of mercenaries, promising to equip and empower the Nigerian military to defeat the insurgents.

Mr Zulum made his suggestion when he received a federal government delegation that visited the state to commiserate with the people of Borno over the Saturday killing of 43 farmers by suspected members of Boko Haram.

PREMIUM TIMES reported Saturday’s mass killing of rice farmers in Zabarmari community in Jere Local Government Area of Borno State. The victims were buried on Sunday.

On Monday, the federal government delegation was led by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, who was accompanied by the Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Gambari, the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno and other ministers.

Mr Lawan conveyed the sympathy of the federal government over the killings in Jere even as he reiterated the commitment of the Buhari administration to end the 11 years old insurgency.

But Mr Zulum seemed unimpressed with the depth of the federal government’s commitment towards ending the decade-old war.

The governor, therefore, made six key recommendations to the federal government to resolve the insurgency.

“One of our recommendations as possible solutions to end the insurgency is the immediate recruitment of our youths into military and paramilitary services to complement the efforts of the Nigerian forces,” he said.

“Our second recommendation is to engage the services of our immediate neighbours, especially the government of Chad, Cameroon and Niger Republic, in clearing the remnants of Boko Haram hiding in the shores of the Lake Chad.

“Our third recommendation is for him to engage the services of the mercenaries to clear the entire Sambisa forest.

“Our fourth recommendation is for him to provide the police and the military, with armed resistant armoured personnel carriers and other related equipment.

“We are also soliciting the support of the federal government to support the Borno state repatriation of out displaced persons currently residing in Cameroon and Niger Republic,” he said.

The governor also called on President Buhari to increase federal support for residents of Borno State.

The governor said though the insurgency had dragged on for 11 years, it was persistent because efforts have not been well coordinated. He described Saturday’s killings and many others as avoidable occurrences if adequate support and infrastructure had been provided for the Northeast and military.

The governor said one of the major reasons the insurgency persisted was due to a lack of critical infrastructure like good roads in the region. He said the federal government-owned ministry of works had not constructed or rehabilitated roads in the last 25 years “in Borno State and most parts of the North-east.”

“If the federal can fix the bad roads in Borno and the North-east, the insurgency would be reduced by 60 per cent,” he said.

Earlier the Senate President said his delegation was in the state to commiserate with the people over the gruesome and barbaric killing of the farmers.

He said the president was told that some other farmers in Zabarmari were yet to be accounted for at the time of the visit.

“No efforts will be spared, as the government will do anything and everything until we take the fight against insurgency to their enclaves.

“In this regard, the government will continue to provide resources to our armed forces and other security agencies and also intensify bilateral and multilateral operations with our neighbours, particularly to ensure that the insurgents have nowhere to fight when they are chased out of our country.”

The federal government delegation later paid a visit to the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Elkanemi, who also called for more support from the federal government.

Governor Zulum later led the delegation to the attacked community in Zabarmari where Mr Lawan and his co-visitors met and sympathised with the bereaved villagers.

There is only one way to bring this bh/isawp under control. Arm and train local militia to take the war to them. It worked against isis in Iraq and Syria. Arm them with rockets, machine guns and automatic weapons.

This governor is just foolish.

I am wont to think that he is one of the unseen hands fuelling the crisis. Listen to the demands... A full measure of selfish desires, not in any way aimed to quelling the crisis on neutral grounds but those that brings personal favour to him and his acolytes.

Tucano will not solve anything here if we don't up our game. Even without Tucanos we can still send them to their graves in numbers.

We only need the zeal and seriousness thats all.

How can the war end in 2021 or 2022 when we are still sitting in Super camps and waiting for attacks.

What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog- General Dwight Eisenhower.

Even with tucanos, our infantry still have a lot of work to do.

exactly our infantry need to do more work...NAF has been playing her role since but NA needs to up their game.

I really don't think we need mercenaries instead joint ops with the chadians.. they've been our biggest and most active supporter in this war since
I wish they sustained the tempo of op yacini takfir

There is no need for insults...

If there is anything other than blaming the Federal government for the poor state of infrastructure and the demand that the youth of the area be enlisted into the military and paramilitary... Plus the suggestion of inviting mercenaries, tell me calmly.

If there is none, then he remains foolish and seeking to profit from the charade.

The local government's in red are under ISWAP's control with the exception of Mongunno. At the point of winning the war, FG lost the zeal. These local governments have heavy terrorist presence, they should be the target of heavy airstrikes and artilleries. Mongunno can be the staging ground for a crazy offensive to recover remaining territories from ISWAP. Gudzamala is like the capital of their caliphate, many of the commanders resides here, capturing this town should be the first objective with the aim of killing most of the commanders. Since many of these local governments are located on the borders with our neighbors, we should ask them to assist with the offensive, to attack from their own sides and force the terrorists to split their forces and logistics and also reduce the chances of escaping through the border to reorganize and launch counter-attacks. Magumeri is rumored to be the major logistics route for these towns, it has a large military garrison, the soldiers deployed there should work towards preventing movement of logistics in this axis to starve the terrorist in these local governments. In about six months, these war can be won with very little casualties but I think they are saving the offensive for election year to use as campaign shocked
Because I see no reason why the airforce can't be bombarding these locations.
And it should also be noted that the population of these local governments are predominantly kanuri.

super camp is a military strategy not necessarily a hype. Here you cede the rural areas and countryside to the enemy and hold the urban areas. It helps for better defense of urban areas. For example, you'll notice that suicide bomb attacks have reduced since the strategy began. However, you'll stall the war with it. And leave people outside the towns vulnerable. Also you'll increase chances of ambush on the outskirts. Insurgency is hard to completely wipe out. It's not like they're all in one room.

grin grin grin

True he maybe displeased and seeking all the help he can get to end this but then you and I can agree that in the area of local intelligence, he has a role to play. Coming to play to the gallery is what I don't like. And as for his demands, it smacks of selfishness "in my opinion."

The popular mantra "politics is local" should apply here. Security should be local too, at the community level and not only when locals are recruited into the force.

He should Shepherd his people towards developing a strong intelligence culture that makes it very uncomfortable for men fighting with the insurgents to live amongst them.

As someone said here, an insurgent without arms is just a villager.

At a certain point in the Afghan COIN war, US and NATO started concentrating their soldiers in large and heavily fortified military bases to reduce casualties. They did the same thing in Iraq after the assassination of General Qassem Sulaimani and the threats of attacks from several militant groups. There is nothing wrong with the super camp strategy, it prevents large towns, FOBs and weapons from falling into the hands of terrorists and also facilitates the administration of recaptured territories, it only needs to be augmented with a good mobile strike force to launch attacks into the terrorist areas of influence and keep expanding captured territories.
Imagine having mobile strike forces operating from the comfort of these supercamps to wreak havoc on BHT/ISWAP.

Yes the US are kings of Mobile Strike Forces... They can move aggression from one point to the other at a very fast and terrifying rate(have you seen a US ARMY mechanized column moving? Its such a beautiful show) ... However the Nigerian army has so much to learn... 20 Ezeogwu MRAP assuming we have them cannot even serve a single assault... We know Boko Haram uses RPG, we know they set mines. So why is it that we keep going out there to assault them as if we do not know how prepared they are? At this point in our battle Nigeria should have one of the most mechanized fighting force in all of Africa... But we cannot even field a decent fleet of MBTs. We have been fighting this war for how many now. Look at Algeria, look at South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia. These are people that take their defense seriously. Nigeria thinks Toyota Hilux is the holy grail of a mechanized fighting force.
