Amnesty International has alleged that no fewer than 115 persons have been killed in the South-East by security operatives between March and June.

Amnesty International, in its recent report, said relatives of the victims denied the deceased were part of the ‘unknown gunmen’ that were attacking security agents.

In the report entitled, ‘Nigeria: At least 115 people killed by security forces in four months in country’s Southeast,’ the organisation further claimed that many of the victims were deposited at government hospitals in Imo and Abia states.

Furthermore, the human rights watch organisation quoted some hospital sources as saying that all the victims deposited by the police had bullet injuries, adding that at least 21 security personnel were also murdered within three months in Imo.

According to AI’s report, more than 500 were arrested after police and military raids.

Amnesty International, through its Country Director, Osai Ojigho said there are evidence which painted a damning picture of ruthless excessive force by security operatives in Imo, Anambra and Abia states.

“The evidence gathered by Amnesty International paints a damning picture of ruthless excessive force by Nigerian security forces in Imo, Anambra and Abia states,” it noted.

The report added that security agencies in Nigeria have committed a catalogue of human rights violations and crimes under international law ranging from mass arrests, torture, excessive unlawful force among others, in the South East.

The report noted, “Nigeria’s government has responded with a heavy hand to killings and violence widely attributed to the armed group calling itself Eastern Security Network, the armed wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra, a pro-Biafra movement.

“According to government officials, the ESN killed dozens of security operatives and attacked at least ten public buildings, including prisons and police stations, from January to June. In response, security forces comprising military, police, and Department of State Services have killed dozens of gunmen, as well as civilians, where attacks have been committed.”

Eyewitnesses told AI that the security forces engaged in excessive use of force, physical abuse, secret detentions, extortion, burning of houses, theft, and extrajudicial executions of suspects.

The human rights groups estimated that the death toll from violence between January and June 2021 in Anambra, Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi states might run into the hundreds, adding that the police said ESN fighters killed 21 of its personnel in Imo State alone.

The Eastern Security Network, ESN, the security wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, was accused by the Nigerian government and its security agencies of carrying out series of attacks most notably on Imo Police headquarters and Imo Correctional Centre, where many prisoners were set free.

Security operatives who visited the scene of the attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen at Miango Community in Plateau State retreated and scampered for safety, some residents have told SaharaReporters.

A source in the community told SaharaReporters that the attackers, who came in their hundreds, overpowered the police and the military during a gun battle.

The Fulani herdsmen overpowered the police operatives and continued terrorising Jebbu-Miango and Kpachudu communities.

The source, who confided in SaharaReporters, explained that the community was invaded on Monday and continued on Tuesday night.

“During the attack, 50 persons were killed, while about 2000 houses in total were burnt to ashes. There is increased tension in the communities as everyone had deserted the areas.

“Thousands of our people have become homeless,” he said.

Nuhu Bitus Nga, another witness, also confirmed that “in the continuous attacks, the gunmen stormed Jebbu-Miango and Kpachudu communities again after the security men withdrew. The herdsmen burnt to ashes more than 500 houses, carted away properties and domestic animals. They killed four aged parents in our community. Amongst the mansions destroyed were four churches – all burnt to ashes.”

The pan Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has praised the two Nigerian judges who delivered judgments on two cases involving the Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo also known as Igboho and his detained aides on Wednesday.

Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, urged the government to comply with the court rulings.

He noted that those responsible for the execution of the rulings should be sanctioned if they fail to comply.

Justice Oladiran Akintola of the State High Court in Ibadan and Justice Obiora Egwaatu of a Federal High Court, Abuja, had on Wednesday, gave separate rulings in respect of Igboho and his aides respectively.

The verdict by Justice Akintola granted an ex-parte motion restraining the Directorate of State Services, DSS, and the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, from arresting, intimidating, harassing and blocking bank accounts of Igboho.

Justice Akintola also restrained the agencies of government from freezing the accounts of the activist, and where this had been done, it must be de-frozen according to the ruling.

Restructure Nigeria before 2023 – Afenifere charges Buhari

Similarly, Justice Obiora Egwaatu of a Federal High Court, Abuja, also granted bails to the 12 aides of Igboho who were arrested on July 1, by DSS operatives during a raid of his residence in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Reacting, Ajayi commended the judges for delivering such rulings.

In a statement he signed and forwarded to DAILY POST, Ajayi said: “The verdicts given by Justices Oladiran Akintola and Obiora Egwaatu further reinforce our confidence in the judiciary. We call on the officials and government agencies concerned to comply with the court’s rulings.

“It took valiant legal efforts of Barrister Pelumi Olajengbensi to counter the efforts of the DSS lawyer, Barrister I. Awo who tried to stop the suspects from being granted bails.

“Afenifere saluted the courage of Justice Obiora Egwaatu for granting the bails especially given the fact that the suspects have been in the custody of the DSS for 34 days without being charged to court.

This is against the expressed provision of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which, in Section 35(4), stipulates that a suspect be charged to court within 24 hours of arrest”

Afenifere praised Justice Egwaatu for insisting that all the detainees be brought to court when the DSS was literally playing hide and seek with their fate.

“In a saner clime, their initial submission of not knowing where some of the detainees were should earn the officials concern sanction. They did so all in an attempt to prevent the detainees from getting justice.

“We salute Justice Egwaatu for standing firm and for eventually granting the detainees bails.”

The Afenifere spokesman added that since it is the Constitution that stipulates the time period of 24 hours within which a suspect must be charged to court after arrest, “any officer or agency of government that contravenes this aspect of the law must be sanctioned severely to serve as a deterrence to others. It is the failure to sanction erring officials of government in the past that emboldened others to trample on the fundamental human rights of Nigerians”.

Ajayi also gave kudos to Justice Akintola for granting the prayers of Igboho’s lawyer, Barrister Yomi Alliyu in the course of arguing the N500 billion case he instituted against the DSS for damages caused when the agency forcefully invaded his client’s house.

“The verdicts Justices Akintola and Egwaatu confirm the exhortation that the court is the place to go when one’s right is infringed upon.”

When it comes to integrity one thing is clear THE POLICE OVERWHELMINGLY HAVE NONE

Why would you believe the story of the police has more credibility than every day citizens.
Because the everyday crimes committed by citizens superseds that committed by the NPF .

Nigerian is horrible not because of police but because of the Everyday Nigerian who neither pays his tax or toll or cheats his workers or steals from the government coffers or request bribe( for lower civil servant) .

Nigerians generally don't deserve any credibility as these policemen were once everyday citizen and future policemen are today 's common citizen.

Credibility is not a Nigerian value .Therefore, trust neither the activist ready to bring his family out of poverty by igniting violence nor the simple Okada man who will hand u over to kidnappers to gain school fees money for his kids nor the policemen who need to fulfill Oga's monetary requirement unless they want to be sacked.

Only a confirmed m0ron will believe whatever the Nigerian police or any of our security agencies has to say. They lie, fabricate and dissemble as a matter of course, and this even when there's absolutely no need. Truth means nothing to them and they can look the almighty in the face and blandly lie even if he's waving solid and incontrovertible evidence in their face that shows they are talking rubbish.

What perpetually amuses me is how they always trumpet their professionalism and respect for the rule of law even when it's clear to a village idi0t that this is not the case. It's no accident the Nigerian police is rated the worst in the world and our security agencies have an unpalatable reputation locally and internationally.

I don't hate the country. I'm just disgusted, angry and disappointed with the way things are. Nigeria could be so much better than it is and it pains me that we are where we are at the moment with no visible hope that things go be better anytime soon and that we go take our rightful place in the world.

Wow!

First thing, every Nigerian pays tax either directly or indirectly. Second thing, many choose not to pay tax because they know the tax will just be eaten by the oga's at the top. Third, many actually pay tax by force as the agberos at markets and parks forcefully collect tax from drivers, market women and shopkeepers.

We are not the country we are now because we don't pay tax. We actually pay far more direct and indirect tax than we are supposed to, which is something any business man or woman should have known. The 123 billion naira that MC Oluomo's boys are conservatively said to collect every year in Lagos no be chicken feed.

Now, Nigeria is horrible because those who are supposed to impartially enforce the law wickedly and criminally subvert it for their own ends. It's horrible here cos there's nothing like justice, as you can do whatever crime you want and bribe judges and the police to go free. It wouldn't be such a horrible place if the police actually started doing their job, rather than seeing Nigerians as fat sheep they are obliged to shear, kill and eat. It wouldn't be such a horrible place if rogue policemen and corrupt public service personnel and politicians started being violently and urgently weeded out and made to pay for their crimes.

From what I can see, it's like you think everyone here is corrupt, wicked and will do anything for money. A very large percentage are, but not all. You also seem to be blaming the problems of this country all on the populace, that's a myopic view to have. And that's bewildering for a supposed seer.

Modified: and to paraphrase you, an average Nigerian like you who hates the general citizenry is worse than a Fulani herdsman.

Critics of Nigeria have ensured that all Nigerians are familiar with the negatives of Nigeria. Actually critics have been so effective that it has become as if the entire world is familiar with these negatives. I’m sure I’m not the only one occasionally surprised by some foreigners’ expert negative opinions on Nigeria. It is a wonder then that some Nigeria critics on this thread find others unreceptive when they criticise. A poster (Lurker4Long ) even uploaded a Fela video – possibly not the Lurker4Long’s intention but the vid reinforces this observation that criticism of Nigeria has a long history. We get it - disgusts, anger and disappointment with the way things are is in the DNA - and maybe some of us would appreciate a fresh approach to these criticisms of all aspect of Nigeria and Nigerianess supposedly intended as a kick in the direction of positive change. A less stale approach may be for all future such “motivational” speeches and writings to include positives that counteract the debilitating and morally exhausting negatives. Battling negatives is possibly easier when invigorated by positives.

So, Yulaw, if you’re not offended by my asking, what would you suggest are the Nigeria's positives we all should be aware of in order that we may preserve them and improve on them even as we are reminded of the negatives that we all must fight to reverse?
