Customs hands over seized arms, ammunition to DSS in Lagos.

The Nigeria Customs Service, Tin-Can Island Command has recently  handed over seized arms and ammunition allegedly being smuggled into the country to officials of the Department of State Security (DSS).
A middle aged man, Christian Mbachi, alleged to be behind the illegal importation was also handed over to the DSS officials for further investigations and subsequent prosecution.

The items which were carefully concealed in the two vehicles were said to have been smuggled into Nigeria from the United States of America.

Among the items handed over are nine military bullet proof vest, one military helmet,  a gas mask, one Omini American tactical rifle No. AR48634, one Moasberg American pump action rifle No. U648018, 3500 hollow point pellet ammunition, 4000 military air gun ammunition, 26 packs of military made food and one rifle punch, two military boots.

The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Bashir Yusuf, who handed over the seized items to Mr. Julius Odey, a Director with DSS, Tin-Can Island Command, explained that the arms were concealed in two vehicles, a Toyota Corolla car with chases No.2T1BR32E54C30941 2004 model and a Nissan Amanda car with chases No.5N1AA08A69N709789 2007 model.

He said, while the items in the Toyota Corolla car were discovered to contain 40 pieces of Hardy X&W ammunition, the Nissan Amanda was discovered to contain two military rifles, military bullet proof vest, gas mask, two military boost, packs of already prepared military food and ammunition.

He said that the items were declared as personal effects by its owners which allow that necessary duty is not paid.

He explained that arms and ammunition are on the federal government absolute prohibited list, and not on the trade list, stressing that this makes it illegal for any individual or group of persons to bring them in without necessary government approval.

"The items arrived into the country on November 29, the discovery was made on 30 November. Since then we had carried out discreet investigations which account for the reason why we did not make it public since then.

"It is the investigation that led to the arrest of a suspect and the subsequent discovery of the country of origin of the consignment" he said.

Al Shabaab parades captured UPDF soldier in Southern Somalia

Al Shabaab militant group said it had captured Ugandan soldier serving with the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in a special operation in southern Somalia on Wednesday, Garowe Online reports.

The soldier whose name has not yet been identified was captured at an area located 3 km west of Qoryoley district, where AMISOM was accused for civilian causalities after shooting a minibus with RPG this week.

The captured UPDF soldier was later paraded in Barire village by Al Shabaab insurgents in a pickup vehicle as a prisoner of war. AMISOM has already confirmed one of its soldiers gone missing from the military camp in Qoryoley town.

"An AMISOM soldier deserted AMISOM’s defensive position at Qoryoley district on Wednesday  at 8:00 a.m. and we will continue with the search to find this missing soldier," AU mission said in a Twitter post.

Local residents in Barire town told GO that the soldier appeared in handcuffs and dressed in an apparent UPDF uniform with a Ugandan flag during the show off.

Previously, Al Shabaab has captured six soldiers from Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) after a massive bomb and gun attack on AMISOM's military base in Janaale district in Lower Shabelle region in September 2015.

Subsequently, the group released a video in 2016, showing a UPDF soldier held as prisoner of war for over a year, requesting from his Ugandan government to act to free him from the Somalia-based militants.

In the Al Shabaab video, the UPDF soldier has identified himself as Masassa M.Y. who has been serving with AMISOM in Somalia since June 2015, before he was captured in September 2015 attack in Janaale.

Al Qaida-linked Al Shabaab group was pushed out from major towns in central and southern Somalia but still carries out sporadic attacks against Somali security forces and Allied AMISOM troops in a bid overthrow the UN-backed Somali government in Mogadishu.

Jihadists launch coordinated assault in Burkina Faso

A military post in northern Burkina Faso close to the borders with Mali was the target of a coordinated assault early this morning. At least 11 Burkinabe soldiers and one gendarme were killed in the attack, which was attributed to jihadists. Reuters reported Friday’s attack about 19 miles from the Malian border began at around 5 a.m. local time and was carried out “by about 40 heavily armed individuals who have not yet been identified,” the army told them in a statement.

Local media added that some of the dead were killed after being burned alive, while military equipment, including vehicles, were taken from the post during the assault.

No terrorist group has yet laid claim the attack, but several jihadist groups are known to operate in this area. This includes al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb’s Katibat al Murabitoon, led by Mokhtar Belmokhtar, and its Tuareg front group Ansar Dine. Another group, Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), a splinter cell of Murabitoon led by Abu Walid al Sahrawi, also operates there.

Murabitoon has claimed two kidnappings in northern Burkina Faso in the last two years, while several gendarmerie posts have fallen under attack this year. The Islamic State in the Greater Sahara has claimed at least two assaults in northern Burkina Faso since September. Ansar Dine’s Katibat Macina is also responsible several attacks along the Mali-Burkina Faso borders.
