"It was also gathered that the group, after taking Baga, had been making consistent attempts to overrun Monguno (64km from Baga and 171km to Maiduguri). But they have been repeatedly beaten by the Army’s Special Forces deployed in the town.

Many of the insurgents have lost their lives in the hands of the elite troops defending the town, sources said. They also said that over 200 of them were killed by Nigerien forces as they moved towards the neighbouring country after they were repelled from Monguno".

Those stvpid countries don't see this crisis as a regional problem, they are still seeing it as a Nigerian problem.

Is a soldier allowed to buy personal hand gun for use in battlefield, NV... And even his own Kevlar vest

It's not possible to buy u personnel gun for use in the battlefield.

I know of buying some accesories and kits online but not a firearm.

You need to go through the police to get a fire arm permit either as a civilian or military/security agencies but I think as a military man it should be easier.

Update on ISWAP attack on Damasak.
Update: Multiple sources said #Nigeriantroops successfully repelled an #ISWAP attack last night, killing scores of the attackers and burning down at least 5 of their trucks. ISWAP, curiously, has not issued a statement, apparently because they suffered defeat.

This is Tactical air command Markurdi, Boko boys aren’t anywhere close to this base.

Seeing this is a discussion thread, I'll chime in, using my little experience in the South African military. The South African Air Force, like our other services, has always prepared its bases for defence for almost 100 years now. One never knows!

Whilst the Boko arseholes might not threaten Markurdi now, what happens should they do so? Look at the NA, their FOBs have been overrun so easily because the prevailing thought behind their construction was so deficient.

2) To pursue Jakes' point about the temporal nature of the threat, what happens to that base when a peer conducts either an air assault or a special forces raid?

Again, using the SA military: throughout our bush wars fought over 1 thousand km away in ostensibly other people's territory, our home bases were and are on a posture that allows defence.

Lest someone say ancient history (1975-1990), recent examples: Burundi, Central African Republic(CAR), Comoros, Congo, Sudan, not a single one of our bases has been overrun. Not for any reason but we practice over and over again the basics: all bases have to be designed with the enemy either achieving match or over.

a) In the Sudan (Darfur), the rebels could not overrun any of our FOBs, despite having an advantage in numbers;

b) a company sized FOB in the Congo recently repelled a battalion of the enemy dressed as friendly forces with nothing heavier than 4 x 81mm mortars and 4 x .50 cal MGs. An FOB constructed for defence, with only 3 points, beyond artillery support from sector HQ, held out till ground and air support arrived.

Many misunderstand doctrine and think of all sorts of highfalutin concepts. It simply means how do you plan to fight.
The Nigerian military's, at the moment, is a mystery. Both to outside observers and to those of your officers with whom I've interacted.

I advocated the same some time back. Two squadrons of 500s or 530s at 5mn USD each as light gunship/ recon to ID targets and call in the Mi 35s/alphas and f 7s.

Brand new

It's production line is always on for civilian market supply so my best guess 1 year from contract signature , entire 100 within 1 and half year from start of delivery.

Even 6 months possible if demanded , by rerouting civilian ones to military standards, they r simple so not much headache.

True! Look at the Afghanistan air force, though its typically used as army aviation.

"According to a MD Helicopters press release, the first deliveries under the contract will be 30 MD 530Fs for an estimated $177 million. The first part of the order is expected to be completed by September 2019"

BTW,this is a massive 150 ship order ending in 2022.

Main body and rotor can withstand hit to an extent

But coaxial tail rotors at the rear any damage to it or the transmission boom ie the long tail , helicopter has no option but to descent fast otherwise the whole helicopter will go into a uncontrollable spin to the ground.

But are NAF Attack help pilots not taught how to counter autorotation? I don't mean any disrespect to those fallen heros though. God knows the limited seconds they had to control their damaged helicopter in a raging battle before the helo crashed. May their souls rest in peace.

grin And you should stop typing in all caps.
What assumptions did i jump to? Those were pics of BIR, and i point out that the BIR are specialized units, aren't they? And what if they are 3,000 strong? How hard is it to kit 3,000 men, seriously?
And your pic of actual Cameroonian soldiers means? What battle zone was that taken from? How many of them were deployed to that battle zone? a few hundred? Unless you are new here, i think we've all seen regular NA troops very well kitted in battle as well.
Why are some of you guys bent on belittling our troops?
When Cameroon have tens of thousands of troops to kit and feed, let me know and show us pics of how they kit them in ongoing battle, actual battle, not chasing around guys with machetes in the woods .

NIGERIAN AIR FORCE HELICOPTER GUNSHIP DESTROYS TERRORISTS’ GUN TRUCKS IN NIGHT RAID NEAR DAMASAK IN NORTHERN BORNO STATE

The Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE has destroyed some Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) gun trucks in air strikes conducted near Damasak in Northern Borno State. The attacks were executed yesterday, 5 January 2019, whilst providing close air support for ground troops at Damasak who were in pursuit of the terrorists who had attempted to breach their location. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Mi-35M Helicopter Gunship engaged the group of terrorists’ gun trucks in successive waves of attacks as they retreated, destroying and immobilizing 3 of them while causing significant damage to others and neutralizing several terrorists.

Base on my analysis the main differences are:

Mi-24v - is design wit a Chin mounted quad-barrel 12.7mm main gun

MI-35p - has a side mounted dual-barrel 30mm main gun

MI-35m - also has a Chin mounted dual-barrel 23mm main gun.

MI-35m & MI-35p are both from Russia.

Mi-24v is from the Ukraine which his the export variant of the Mi35

Both the Mi24 and Mi35P are in service with NAF

IMO, they should be with your army aviation! Not the NAF-in an aircav or similar specialist unit like our own 50 aircav. Developing doctrine and calling support without inter service rivalry is thus non existent.

FYI,in Korea it often took 12-24 hrs for the USAF to respond to urgent CAS calls! That's why they ,the USMC, developed their own tacair.

IMO the Army wouldn't be getting any aviation assets. We should learn Joint-service synergy.

I prefer Army Air Liaison officers to help coordinate fires from above

Or maybe lack of discipline. That's what I have noticed. The military job Is not meant to be comfortable, you just have to adapt to it. Some of my boys leave their gear in the vehicle because they feel it's extra wahala. I didn't complain till we got back and I made it known to my superior who corrected them.

However, apologies to captainstephen. NA boys seems not to have this morale and discipline naturally and feel they can fight like the the enemies with boot, shirt and riffle alone. I have seen several military gear left behind during patrol due to soldiers negligence. I feel the Army brass should enforce strict disciplinary actions towards any soldier in a bad fatigue in public pictures.

I haven't been hit before but I am very sure the vest has saved serval lives. I don't even joke with my head gear.

NGAAIIEE or CHAAIIEE as you guys say! Your guys abandon personal gear in the field due to fatigue, iow, lack of proper physical fitness??

One puzzle I'm yet to unravel is how most American soldiers with heavy kits/body armour which even limits agility, still pile up casualties. One is left to wonder what's the essence of those heavy gear(atimes are up to 50pounds) if they're not keeping the soldiers save putting into cognizance the rounds being fired by Talibans(Ak 46).
Korengal/restrespo and only the dead, are battlefield documentaries that are eye-openers to the uncertainty, fear and even confusion in the battlefield.
