According to a report in British broadsheet newspaper the Independent, Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

It is claimed that the 21-year-old Nigerian international was stopped outside the club's stadium at 5.30 am on Saturday 24 January.

The midfielder, who did not play in Chelsea's 3-1 FA Cup fourth round victory over Ipswich Town on Saturday, has reportedly since been charged.

The 6ft 2in former Lyn Oslo star will now appear at West London Magistrates Court on 3 April where it is believed he could receive either a year's driving ban or even a jail sentence if found guilty.

The Sun quotes a Chelsea spokesman as saying: "We are aware [Mikel] was arrested and charged. We want to establish the facts before we comment."
