One person that Okoya [the creator] really hopes the dolls will have a positive impact on is his daughter, who, he explains, once wished she was white.

Nigerian entrepreneur, Taofik Okoya, has created
Nigerian dolls that are outselling the Barbie doll, the
UK Daily Mail is reporting. The paper said according to
Reuters, 9,000 units of the £4.50 (N1,280) dolls are sold per month, taking up 15 percent of Nigeria’s toy market.

According to the Daily Mail, Mr. Okoya decided to make the dolls after he set out to buy a black doll for his niece but could not find any.

The dolls, which are also sold online, have found buyers not only in Nigeria but in America, Brazil and Europe.

In an interview with Elle Magazine, Mr Okoya said
“My mission is to make the Queens of Africa a symbol of hope, trust, and confidence by promoting African history, culture, and fashion.

However, Mr. Okoya, who has been trying to market his dolls in American stores, has been told he can sell them only in specialist stores and not larger department stores but he remains undeterred.

He went to buy a black doll for his daughter and could not find one, so what did he do?

He decided to make one.

Good man.

This is unlike majority of Africans like P-Square guys. They would rather stick with the white dolls and even give their daughter a white name because they will think that makes their daughters more cool.

Aliona has now become an African name.

Right from infancy, kids are indoctrinated to view 'svelte' as the ideal body type. Little wonder they grow up with a warped view of their own body image, and as such experience insecurities that can make them go to any length to conform to the society's view of what beauty should look like.

These dolls look like black, Ankara attired barbies: long limbs, long neck, large eyes and graceful poses. The chubby, naturally shortlegged child will grow up viewing herself as less than beautiful than the slim girl who looks a little like these barbie dolls.

Growing up, my dolls were those stiff, wooly haired plastic dolls that look like 'sigidi' (idols), so I never had that problem cheesy grin grin
sigidi is not idol oh!
I read the story.

where can i get one of those? i think the guy should not just seek to penetrate the european market only....get into the naija market as well. after all i can say categorically that with this kind of product naija has a bigger market than britain. blacks make up les than 8% of british market. and since this is product is most likely to target the black market; let him set up his hq in either lagos or abuja and ship to britain/europe from there(though na china go dey produce am). naija go take order, and paymet, ad him go come call the producer for china to ship to england

Like it or not being fat is not healthy.

We need to shift the paradigm to understand that not everything that is common is good.

Hopefully the sight of beautiful, thin dolls will lead to questions about diet and lifestyle.
Fat and chubby are not thesame that's why we have the endo meso and ectomorphs, everybody can't have thesame body type and average african woman has big bones due to diet and hereditary being fit is not all about size the skinny girls most times are not the healthy ones and also you should know body types varies with race tribes countries , even. In the model industry they have move against using skinny gals.

Please do a search on 'big bones' you will find that is a dishonest term meant to take people away from the true cause of being overweight - poor dietary habits.

Too much salt, consumption of animal fats, general overeating and a lack of regular exercise cause Nigerian women to gain weight. It has nothing to being born with 'big bones'.

The modelling industry has moved away from excessively skinny girls who starve themselves - they too are unhealthy. Whether dying from anorexia or hypertension, premature death is not a sign of a healthy life.

Body shape is not dictated by 'race', 'tribe' or 'country' as they are all social constructs and is not an excuse for being unhealthy.

From your writeup I can see you are a fan of skinny people but not every gal will be thin so you find yourself in a society mixed up with various body types they should deserve equal representation.

I am not a fan of bad habits and misinformation.

Nor do I believe that we should normalize poor health. We have people who are drunkards and people with serious emotional problems but we do not create dolls to commemorate them. Nor should we celebrate obesity with dolls to cater to young girls who may not realize the health implications of carrying excess weight.

I understand that there is a lot of bad advice out there when it comes to diet but that does not take away from the truth - there is nothing healthy about being fat.

How many nigerians do you think are privilege to eat balance diet or even eat balance diet ? Most of our staple foods are enrich with starch. The cheapest protein is beans how many family can afford to eat fresh vegetable everyday? Because someone is chubby or has extra doesn't make that person fat or unhealthy. You only know that through person body mass index

It does mean that they are unhealthy.

BMI is not even an appropriate indicator of health, there are athletes who would be classed as overweight even though they are the peak of health. Measuring body fat percentage and waist to chest ratio is far more revealing as to health than BMI.

Beans are an excellent source of protein, there is nothing wrong with carbohydrates and vegetables are not expensive. Fruit grows in abundance in Nigeria, again it is not expensive. Nigeria is not Niger, there is so much food in Nigeria, a lot of it grows wild - the excuse that it is expensive does not wash. It is evident that lack of food is not an issue for many Nigerians, the problem is knowing what to eat. Telling people that they are overweight because they are born with 'big bones' or making up another issue is irresponsible.

Your health is your greatest asset it should be above all things.
