5 Craziest Questions About Nigerian Marriage Receptions by AllNaijaBlogger(m): 9:36am On Apr 13, 2015
Nowadays, wedding receptions in Nigeria have become the in-thing. If you are a popular or successful person in Nigeria, there is pressure on you from the society for your reception to be big and glamorous. Yes, and we Nigerians love great wedding receptions. However, receptions are not easy to plan, organize and execute to finish.

Let us examine the mind-wrenching questions you will be struggling with after attending or executing a few receptions in Nigeria-

5) Where do uninvited guests come from?
If you plan a reception for 300 guests for your wedding in Nigeria, please expect 400 to 500 people to show up. If you like, strictly claim that "this invitation only permits a person plus one" on your invitation card for the wedding, the fact is that people will show up with their friends and even children to your wedding. Even the cameramen and photographers will bring their "technical assistants" to eat at your reception. Nonetheless, this still does not explain the number of strangers one will see seated at the tables at a reception- imagine finding 2 to 3 tables full of people you have never seen in your life at your own wedding!

4) How does the bride's make-up stay on?
Let us make note of 4 important things in Nigerian weddings-
- the bride and groom must dance seriously at the reception
- Nigeria is hot and you will waste time outside for pre-wedding photos and congratulations
- the bride and groom will have many relatives and friends crowding and touching them.
- the bride won't have time to adjust make up at the reception (since the couple will be mostly on a throne at the centre of the wedding)

With all the sweating, moving about and hugs from well-wishers, how does the bride's make up stay okay? Normally, it should be running or patchy- just like it normally is after a night of clubbing. What magic do these brides do on their faces that makes their make-up stay on perfect throughout the wedding?

3) Where does all the food go?
If you want to cook for 300 people in a Nigerian wedding, you better cook for at least 450 people. The food will disappear quickly. It has happened a number of times where at a budget wedding I had gone to, the caterer of the wedding would be lamenting over the inadequate amount of food left despite preparing for the exact anticipated amount of invited guests.

It will amaze you how many people come to eat extra plates at a wedding. Some will eat 3 plates and have takeaways. Then, you will also have the cameramen, the security and other uninvited guests that will eat too. What is truly amazing is that with only 300 invited guests, food that can feed a thousand people will disappear within 2 hours!

2) What time does the reception start and when does it end?
The definition of "African time" is that a scheduled even won't start at the scheduled time. We Nigerians generally do not keep to time. I have been for numerous receptions that started 1 to 2 hours late. A 2pm reception generally means that the event will start 3pm to 4pm. Even the bride and groom have been late to a wedding reception that I was late for!

One crazy thing that happens in Nigeria is that the church service for the wedding can delay the reception. I have been to a 3-hour church service which delayed the reception for about an hour and a half.

The worst part of this is that if you are an organiser for the wedding reception or a close relative to the wedding couple, you might not go home that every day of the reception because you can't truly estimate when the wedding will end. Some of the receptions nowadays even end up at clubs! From reception straight to the dance-floor! Wedding shoki.!

1) Where do money-changers get their small denominations of the currency (100/200 Naira notes)?
We Nigerians love to spray money at weddings and make it rain! So where do these "money-changers" whose job it is to break our 1000 or 500 Naira notes into smaller ones get the notes from?

Banks hardly give out 100 or 200 Naira notes so where do these people get the money from? Is there a black market for such currency? Could they even be fake? We would like to know!

This is why one needs an experienced caterer or food manager at the reception to avoid wastage or "overconsumption"...
