Vaswani Accused of Humiliating Nigerians

Accusations were made yesterday against Rajan Vaswani, businessman and head of the powerful Vaswani family, of threatening the life of Dr. Shirish Tanksale, and his family.
This accusation was made at a press conference in Lagos, by Chijioke Odom, Head of Campaigns of the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), foremost rights advocacy group in the country, at the group's corporate office at Ikeja.
According to Tanksale, who ran the Rubee Medical Centre, Sango, Ota, until 1998, as a partnership with Veepee Industries Limited, trouble started for him when he requested for his 25% of the venture after his exit, April 8, 2008.
Tanksale and his wife, Jyoti Tanksale, narrated to bewildered journalists, how Vaswani has taken them through a lot of intimidation and torture and humiliating experiences with the connivance of the Nigerian Police.
They also stated that Vaswani boasted of running them out of Ota and forced them to sign an undertaken, which includes among other things, requires them to close up their practice and move it, together with his residence out of Ota.
Also inclusive was the victims should forgo their entitlements in Rubee Hospital, which totalled up to N640 million, and should own up to stealing N129 million and other financial irregularities.
Shirish and his family express a fears what would be their fate with Vaswani's threats who had boasted to him that he was not afraid of anybody in Nigeria, saying: "Nigerians are like black dogs. I feed them, they can only bark, they don't bite"
However, the CLO at the press conference called on the National Director-General of State Security Services (SSS), the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), to wade into the matter and offer protection to Dr. Shirish and his family, who are naturalized Nigerian citizens.
CLO also called on the IGP and the D-G SSS, NHRC and Police Service Commission (PSC), to summon the Commissioner of Police Special Fraud Unit (SFU) to explain his role in the seeming complicity of his unit in what it called the running harassment and dehumanization of a Nigerian citizen by a foreigner.
