So why did the article report that more cops showed up after the initial first ones? I thought you are only assigned two or three cops to monitor protest?

They send more anticipating a peaceful protest may turn into a disturbance
The article also said a police helicopter hovered around a while
It's a precautionary measure

You don't feel sorry for people like that, let his treatment serve as a deterrent to others that wouldn't bat an eyelid in making such dangerous statement.

He lives in the US where the issue of race is a very sensitive thing, what was he thinking?

I hope that those that supports him in this forum would be alright if far right-wing extremists in Europe and America begins to call for the total extermination of colored people from their various societies?

People have to accept the consequences of their actions.

That is what keeps normalcy in the world.

If you commit a crime you get punished.

We all are shouting that the SA government did not do enough to curb xenophobia/genocide.

Well this is how it starts, from one verbose Oba to a talkative doctor, before you know it, it becomes norm.

That is why such actions must be vehemently discouraged less it turns into something monstrous.
Okay. Fair enough.

But in my neck of the woods, I know you don't kill an ant with a sledgehammer. Sure the ant will die. But the hammer would cause a crack on the rocky floor, sending you, over the precipice if you were on a mountain.

Did Dr Ariyo make the xenophobic statement in a public fora, like a gathering of Yoruba youths asking them to go up in arms or in a private conversation like a lot of bigots are wont to do? What is his sphere of influence? Is he a Yoruba leader of some sort? How many people even knew about his existence talk more of his statement before someone latched on and blew it up?

What then is the aim of these protests? To serve as a deterrent for future hate speech offenders or just to destroy him? These are the things I don't understand because if the aim is to serve as a deterrent then I don't see it achieving that.

Rather I'm worried it might achieve the opposite if it stokes ethnic tension.

When Israel started out it had the world's support. It was the Jewish settlement in the midst of hostile Arab neighbours. It had to defend itself. But as Israel deployed massive force killing thousands of Palestinians each time a handmade grenade (which didn't kill any Israeli) was thrown over their side of the border, public opinion shifted.

Yes Israel wanted to send a strong message by deploying their massive tanks and missiles. No Palestinian should dare throw grenades over their border.

Did it ever work?

No.

Rather, each cycle, some young Palestinian did the same thing and soon public opinion has shifted in their favour. Right now Israel's biggest ally America is about to join other European countries in recognising the State of Palestine.

Getting statehood is the first step in Palestine starting an army and in future, they could start getting military support from other countries to counter and match Israel's force in the event of any outbreak of hostilies.

Back to Dr Ariyo's case.

When the news broke public opinion was on the side of the Igbos. Even Yorubas took to twitter to condemn it just like in Oba Akiolu's case but if the issue is over flogged public opinion might well shift back in the favour of Ariyo especially when it looks like Igbos are on a vindictive pull him down syndrome.

Besides the man has claimed his account was hacked but let's even assume he actually said those things.

Did he make the xenophobic statement in a public fora, like a gathering of Yoruba youths asking them to go up in arms or in a private conversation like a lot of bigots who are the main champions of these cause have done on nairaland? Word Bawse.

I believe the Doc has learnt his lesson. They should let it go. I'm glad no Yoruba group went there to support the Doc during the protest, otherwise it'd turned to Igbo vs Yoruba fracas in far away USA.

The Doc is not going down, they should let it go.

Lobatan.

NOTHING is going to happen to the doctor. Igbos r just buncha jobless noisemakers. Let them go to school, work hard nd become successful like the man instead of exuding jealousy.

Your analogy is Apples and oranges.

The obvious reason for the protest is to deter any such occurrence in the future.

I am not sure anyone would want such negative publicity so it will discourage anyone from any tribe making hate speeches.

Racist statements are some of the most career damaging anywhere in the developed world.
It is not peculiar to Nigeria.

Lmfaooo one thing the medical industry in America cares about is reputation. The only ones immune are doctors that works in an abortion clinic. Ariyo is not one. The fact they even calling him a xenophobic, a nazi, etc doctor is going to catch him an ugly reputation. It's even written up there that many of his patients actually stopped to ask what was going on and joined the protest after hearing what he said. Also, watch the first video. There's only one car in the parking lot of that clinic...that's abnormal in most USA clinics.
They already hitting him where it'll hurt the most..his patients. His workplace will drop him if he continues to be a burden for them. Mind you, they already investigating him, now this protest loosing them patients just got included. If you are his boss will you still keep him considering similar to him exist thousands of foreign trained doctors looking for any type of medical job in the usa.

But you can Keep thinking the protest won't have an effect. grin

Don't mind those id/iots trying to dissuade people from following through their convictions. The protest in appropriate, and sooner or later the concern authorities will do something about Doctor Hate Ariyo.

Call for genocide, xenophobia or murder against any tribe is criminal and must be treated as such! Even Seun is smart enough to have a rule against such here.

3. Don't THREATEN, advocate, or encourage violent acts against any person, tribe, race, animals, or group.

In Nairaland, Dr Hate Ariyo would be banned, in Dallas he should be imprisoned!

So, because of a careless speech which IMO is not an hate speech but a warning advice to you ibos to watch your unsociable ways and utterances, you guys are going all out to bring the man down purely out of sheer jealousy and hatred. Even, when the doctor denied the interpretation you impishly laid on the said speech, you ibos still want to see him fall. Had the guy been an unemployed yoruba man in Dallas, i doubt if you hate-filled, inherently and classically conditioned tribalists would have be wasting so much of your precious (?) time to see to his downfall.

If you oloriburukus feel that bad why don't you protest against the oba who started the whole shenaningan in the first palce? Go to his palace and call for his head because according to you lot, he made a xenophobic speech about you locusts.

One thing though that i want you guys to b ear in mind is that we yorubas are not fools and we are watching you lot and shall remind you in due course of these your shameful and gross disrespectful rhetorics towards us.

When trouble sleeps, yanga (uncultured behaviour) go wake am...........................................Keep partying guys, before long you will climb your trees beyond its leaves!

My point here is, it's always important to have a wholistic view about things especially when dealing with an ethnically charged society like Nigeria. In the attempt to 'deal' with Ariyo let's be careful lest it becomes Igbo versus Yoruba back home in Nigeria.

We all saw how the Akiolu saga cost Agbaje the governorship bid.

It has not yet been proven that Dr Ariyo actually made those hate speeches since he claimed his account was hacked. At least I've seen pornsite videolinks on the timeline of some of my very upright fb friends & when I wondered at it was told they had no idea how it got there, to be able to give the benefit of doubt.

So I'm wondering why not wait till he's been actually found guilty or the TMB given its verdict before all the protests or what not?

A few days back Wole Soyinka was accused of the same thing till the newspaper that published the story retracted & issued an apology. If the paper had tarried we would probably have had the same show of anger& vitroil

This is a very disturbing trend& there's the need to apply caution rather than rushing blindly to settle scores against 'perceived enemies'

Dr Ariyo or whatever he calls himself works & lives in the state. Those guys are carrying placards in front of his office...

His days in that hospital are numbered, if you dont know. He will be sacked & he might be deported back to Nigeria & he will also lose his licence...

Am not happy the way things are turning out. I just wish they let him be... But somehow, somebody must be used as a sign to teach others like you to respect NDI IGBO.
